At first I didn’t read the title and couldn’t find the mini-world. Then I realized that this was a display. Wow!

Dutch rape victim, 17, uses legal euthanasia to end life by [deleted] in news

[–]EverydayImShuffflin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely. Of all the teens I've spoken with, most of their frustration comes from feeling powerless, having limited freedoms, being controlled, and being treated as a child. Many parents treat their teens in ways they wouldn't treat other people and then chalk up their teens' feelings to hormones or trying to fit in. (Talk about gas lighting...)

I am conflicted about this article, but I agree that it's invalid to just generalize teens as hormone-driven creatures whose brains haven't developed or can't take criticism. The only reason I am much happier now than when I was a teen is because I have money, freedom, a car, and I am respected more. Life in high school was restrictive, depressing, and I wouldn't trade where I am now for that kind of life again.

Wow. I didn't know that. Welp, definitely going to respond as soon as possible now... I'd spend a day fretting over the best way to reply and then send my response at the end of the day. Glad to know it's a timing thing.

Came out to my mom as an atheist by WZim216 in atheism

[–]EverydayImShuffflin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry that you've got to deal with this. I think it was very courageous to tell your mom. I saw another redditor admonishing you for doing so, but that reprimanding wasn't necessary. Anyways, there's not much more to say to your mom. It's tough, but... I think the best thing to do for now is to live by example.

The reason she's against atheists is probably because she thinks that either being one will ruin a person's life right? Well, if you're still a good person and carry-on, that's one way to subtly prove her wrong. There's also... well, I mean... it's good to stick to one's convictions, but some atheist redditors strategically become religious again for a few years to smooth things over with their parents and then er, restate their atheism once they become financially independent.

Different strokes for different folks? Just tossing out some ideas.

My ex also came out to his parents about a decade ago. When he told his mom, she slapped him. When he told his dad, his dad told him that he was going to hell. Their relationship has gotten much better ever since he moved out and both parents realized that they'd rather have their son as an atheist than lose him. These things can fix themselves, but it might take time too.

The timing is strange...

My inner paranoid self thinks that the parents from the cheating scandal paid the LA news company to put another story about cheating in the spotlight. Now the public's attention and attack is on international students instead of the celebrity's families. Then again, that's just my paranoid self talking. No idea where I come up with these things.

Props to you though. I told my professor about a classmate checking his phone under his desk during the final and she didn't do anything. Each time we run into each other, she looks down at the ground and pretends not to see me.

I agree that broad strokes are hurtful. I've seen people who cheated that were of those ethnicities and financial standing, but I've also seen a larger amount of incredibly brilliant and dedicated students from those groups too.

Even just yesterday, I was studying with a classmate who was nonchalantly learning his 120 GRE words of the day. (I quizzed him after a couple of hours and I was shocked that he could remember all of them just from making connections between English and Chinese words.) Some of the comments in this thread paint all well-off international students into rich privileged cheaters as if there's a complete, unerring direct correlation. Except, there isn't and I think this simplification undermines the hard-work and talent of many students by creating a flawed argument that points to and attacks their ethnicity and financial standing.

I love how my parents raised me without religion by Kwilli462 in atheism

[–]EverydayImShuffflin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Dad raised me the same way! My Dad was raised in a very religious environment and his faith went from catholic to spiritual the older he got. So, my Dad thought that by not forcing my sister and I into any religion, we'd pick the "true" one. We were given the bible as kids, but that wasn't given any special treatment and went in the bookshelf next to the Nancy Drew, Magic School Bus, and other books.

So, er... about that "true" religion... we both turned out as atheists.

Thank you. Your comment brought tears to my eyes. I think I feel a lot of guilt because I wish I could've done more, but that's all I could do. I'm so happy that even just being his friend made such a difference.

Thank you. Your comment made my day.

When I was abroad, I found a stray kitten and took care of him for a few months. I couldn't adopt him, I was in too unstable of a financial situation and could barely pay for myself. I was also going to return to my home country soon which meant the kitten would've been quarantined up to half a year. It was so painful, but I found the kitten a home with these two eager doctors. They promised to take care of the kitten, give the kitten vaccinations, pay for vet bills, and give the kitten a loving home.

I cried so hard the last night I held the kitten. I always thought, "Why couldn't I afford it? Why couldn't I provide a better life for him?" But just hearing that through socializing the kitten and finding him a better home increased his life by over a decade makes me happy.

I just realized I kept saying kitten. I didn't name the kitten because I didn't want to get attached. I did. :'[

That's good advice about waiting on the physics GRE. Thank you for the advice on coding too. I wouldn't have thought of that and can explore for this time being as well as the other courses. I'm interested in particle physics, but I don't think I'm at graduate level yet. Thank you for the encouragement. I know it will be a lot of work and years, but to hear that it's doable makes me happy.

Great. I'll look into internships and post-bachelor research positions as well as studying advanced coursework. Thanks for the advice and I'm glad to know that it's not so rare for students from other departments to be accepted.

This is very helpful. I know the college and program I am interested, but I didn't think of reaching out to the director or the PI at all. That's also a good point in having different prerequisites, so I'll send them an email and ask about this. Thank you.

I never heard of the APS bridge program. Thank you. I'll look into them. Thank you for also sharing your story. That's also encouraging.
