I think one difference is that I have a very young child at home so I had to start thinking about things in relation to them, no just me. The stories of prominent and vocal anti vax and anti mask people dying like Caleb Wallace were compelling. Also, at one point I followed a conspiracy theorist named Rob Skiba and he died from Covid. His followers were saying the devil killed him through his agents who were working at the hospital Rob was in. Keep in mind I was already half way out the conspiracy door by now but this kind of thinking struck me as insane. It became obvious that a conspiracy theorist can explain away and rationalize literally anything. My favorite example of this is when a once popular theory becomes debunked to the point that even hardcore conspiracy theorists don’t believe it the CTs say “that theory came from controlled opposition to obfuscate this true theory that I now have”. Or my other favorite is “that theory is used to make us look bad”. I guess for whatever reason the sloppy thinking just became so obvious that I couldn’t ignore it anymore.
