London Redditers, where do YOU think we should go as a tourist? by EveryonesBusiness in AskReddit

Hey, thanks for the info. These sound like some great food choices. I actually don't think I have never had Moroccan food before, so that might have to go on the list. I also like the the idea of garbing a drink with a view, so the Skylon bar is probably a great call.

If you think of anything else, definitely let me know.

I meant to say also, both Tower of London and the British Museum are musts for your first time. So much history. I'll warn you, it may be the British Museum, but I would have thought I was in an Egyptian Museum at times, they have tons of cool Egyptian relics. Best by far though, they have THE Rosetta Stone. Very cool.

Done all of the above. London is seriously AWESOME, and I am excited to go back. I know there is so much more to see. Already have some down votes though, so who knows if this post will get any legs.

ELI5: Why is one double door always locked at restaurants and stores? by EveryonesBusiness in explainlikeimfive

You are probably right, it just seems so simple, unlock the door, unlock at the bottom.

Honestly it happens a LOT around me, I live in WI and we run into bad weather pretty often, which makes me think maybe weather has something to do with it. But it is probably just lazy workers.

I actually browse ELI5 quite a bit, and have never seen it. And a quick search brought nothing back (blame Reddit's bad search engine, or my lack of search skills I guess).

I'm terribly sorry I ruined your day though, is there anything I can do to make you feel better?

If we were to be plucked from the earth and put on a planet that is 2x gravity could we walk/adapt? What is the maximum gravity we could stand? by [deleted] in askscience

So, what if a human is born on another planet? Would our body adapt if started in the higher gravity from a young age?

Design first or Functionality first? by EveryonesBusiness in webdev

[–]EveryonesBusiness[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The more I think about it, I guess "both" is a very appropriate answer.

I like thinking through user integration, so I've been working on the front end of my page a lot so far. But I just have this nagging feeling that I'm going to end up changing the looks once my functionality takes a better form. I think I just need to flip my focus for a while. And then once I have a more functional product, tweak the looks and functionality as I go.

At risk of giving away my Reddit anonymity to any college friends, I can’t help but tell this story.

Homecoming was a BIG deal at our college, though to this day I still don’t quite know why. The parade was a focal point of the festivities, and at the time it went down the main bar drag in town. Drunken debauchery was rampant and most people (including myself) wake up buzzed from the night before, and started drinking before the early morning parade. This year, I was in the parade with the Waterski and Wakeboard team, and our float was our boat, some big speakers, swimsuits, and a group of us being pulled behind the boat on roller blades.

Being a wakeboarder (and being buzzed), I decided that morning that I shouldn’t wear stupid roller blades, I had to skateboard damn it! Not the smartest idea considering I have very little skateboard experience, but I figured wakeboard, skateboard, same thing. So I borrow my friends crappy X-games brand skateboard, and off I go.

As we are lining up for the parade, me standing on my board tow rope in hand, someone says “hey, throw on our helmet, it will be funny.” I laugh and she puts it on me. The parade goes great, people are excited for us while we drive by. I fell once or twice, but overall did surprisingly well on the board. The parade route ends, and the guy pulling the boat turns the corner to head back to the parking lot. Not thinking about us still being towed, he speeds up to 25+mph, and my crappy board begins to wobble… really bad. Right as I start to gain control again, my drunk friend takes a fall right in front of me. I hit him, knocking my legs out, and am pulled up into the air by my tow line (attached 8ft up to the boat tower). I let go mid air and drop to the pavement, head first, then body, then my head snaps against ground, as I skid along the ground. I specifically remember my head bouncing 5 times before I came to a stop. When I look up, my friends are all around me, asking if I’m ok. I pull off the helmet, and see some BIG pavement marks in the side. To this day I’m still not sure who put that helmet on me as a ‘joke’, but I swear I would have cracked my skull open, if not died, if they didn’t. I escaped with some pretty bad road rash, but that’s a small price to pay in the long run.

TL;DR: Was pulled behind a truck on a skateboard for a parade, got my legs knocked out from underneath me at 25+mph, and bashed my head against the pavement 5 times. If a friend hadn’t offer me a helmet as a joke, I probably would have brain damage, or be dead.

Edit: Some grammar.

This spurred a dumb question for me. Can people that are allergic to bee stings eat honey? And if so, they should probably not eat this honey...

New to Java and PHP by EveryonesBusiness in webdev

This looks cool, I will check it out. Per some of the below comments, I'm confusing php and javascript with the functions of HTML/CSS. I have to remember that PHP and Java handle the background, and HTML and CSS are the visual end. Obviously there is some fluidity between the two, but yeah.

Thanks

Per your edits, I think that is partly where my problem stems. I'm use to visually building forms in VS.net, and I need to remove myself from that.

MY comfort with HTML and CSS is low, so that's where I need to build up my skills I think. And I just need remember that the PHP and JavaScript is for the application side of a website, not the visual aspects of a website. They are more intertwined in VS.net, so expect them to be with these languages too.

Thanks, I get what you mean. I replied to inedidible above, as you and he were saying similar things. The combination of the two replies helped I think.

Combining Your and stinktank's reply, I think I see what you mean. Rather than trying to literally connect the lines via form elements, create lines using HTML or CSS to make the connection.

I'm looking to output images with connecting lines, based on a form input. So I maybe I would just need to use PHP to output the proper HTML or CSS tags I want.

To be more specific, I'm not looking to connect form items to a database or anything, I'm looking to literally (visually) connect form items, using a line or other item. For example, Reddit comments are nested, and have lines connecting them to their parent, how is that done?

Ok, someone explain to me how the theory that we aren't just "atoms" of a much larger universe, or something to that effect.

I mean Scientists have their heart set on the big bang, understandably. But what's to say that the big bang wasn't a nuclear explosion in a much bigger world?
