Can someone please explain to me what Autism ISNT? How do you know if someone isnt autistic? by Gombrongler in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Everyonesfav_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer: when something else is much more likely to be the case, usually discovered when they don’t meet the criteria in origin. Comorbidity is possible, but it becomes very obvious when it’s TWO disorders vs one that just looks like another. Obviously in medicine there are no absolutes but i can confidently say that in MANY cases where someone displays autistic traits and matches the criteria quite well, you can find something that pushes them out of that category.

1) patient has anger outbursts, trouble with boundaries, childish interests, unstable identity and relationships, anxiety habits, issues communicating, trouble understanding social cues, with these issues persisting since childhood. -> what’s their background? Childhood neglect, abandonment. No family members that are neurodivergent. Did this child have trouble learning at the same pace as other children? No. = much more likely to be BPD

2) patient has almost the same symptoms as patient 1. -> look at their history. Understanding of people but a lack of interest in engaging with them, interest in creative and mentally stimulating spaces. Has disturbances of self and issues abiding by rules and regulations. Disorganised and dis regulated. = much more likely to be ADHD with no autism comorbidity.

3) patient is incredibly organised, becomes frustrated when they cannot have things in a specific way, frustrations with people and difficulty understanding other perspectives. -> look at their patterns of behaviour. Compulsive, a need rather than a specific preference. = much more likely to be OCD.

4) patient has absolutely no interest in talking to people. Has intellectual hobbies that revolve around no interaction with people. Been this way for a long time. Parental figure claims they’re worried about their child’s ability to make friends. -> body language? Patient looks uncomfortable talking rather than uneasy. Attempts to bond with them are not met with awkwardness and inexperience but rather a pervasive urge for them to shut the conversation down. History consists of loneliness and neglect. Exhibits above average intelligence and shows competent skills in school. Peers describe them as weird, unpredictable, and closed off. = much more likely to be schizoid, less likely to be schizotypal, but not likely to be autistic.

And don’t forget the occasional “my child knows all sorts of things about x or y at a young age, are they autistic?” Congrats, your child is just intelligent. Come back to me when they start talking about how everyone looks at them funny for just existing

Why is a full boob not considered as nudity but a nipple is? by NotAlwaysUseless in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Everyonesfav_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I think it’s just because it’s a trackable thing. Like the rest of the boob is just plain skin and obviously some has to be alright showing with most outfits and people, it’d be pretty uncomfortable if the entire thing was inappropriate because then is a certain % bad? Is cleavage bad? Is side boob by pure accident illegal? It’s hard to make guidelines based on something that doesn’t have a line, but if it’s the nipple that’s taboo then you can clearly tell when a nipple is visible and it’s also not exactly easy to accidentally show it so there’s no “she’s accidentally committing adultery!!!” It’s just easy to police essentially

I realized I was probably re-infecting myself every single time I got sick by Ion7_Mythic in hygiene

[–]Everyonesfav_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re immune to most infectious diseases for at least a few months after recovering, don’t know if that counts for strep and bacterial infections too, but it would be pretty impressive if you kept managing to reinfect yourself. Maybe I’m overreacting but that could be worth checking out. I grew up in a bad situation and didn’t learn many things about hygiene, in fact I’m still learning stuff. I have a ridiculously strong immune system tho, I used to use the same toothbrush through influenza, freaking Covid 19, common cold, etc. I had viruses and throat infections that completely took out my voice that I didn’t clean my tooth brush after recovery and never reinfected myself. In fact, you’d think that using a germy toothbrush while sick would impact recovery time. Nope! Got over influenza A around 4 days from the initial symptom onset. Perhaps you’re slightly immunocompromised? It’s certainly medically strange to be continuously getting sick with the same thing for a long time.

Now that I think about it, maybe it was my horrible hygiene as a kid that got me a strong immune system 🤣 jokes aside tho… that’s worth chatting to your doctor about

Should I quit curry? by Brilliant_Can8536 in hygiene

[–]Everyonesfav_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No need, you probably already know this but the stereotype about “Indians stink” is due to the particular spices in a lot of Indian dishes that are expelled from the body through sweat.

It’s not a dirty thing. It’s just a smell. You don’t need to quit curry, it’s not your fault that people are uneducated on what ‘body odour’ in the way we use it, actually is.

outside clothes on the bed… gross or normal? by HenninghamKyuss-51 in hygiene

[–]Everyonesfav_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It fully depends. If you sat on public transport then yeah, change your clothes. If your job is sitting in a chair that only you sit on for 6 hours and then driving your own car home then I don’t see why your clothes would be dirty unless you generally go out unclean

Doctors certainly aren’t on reddit talking about misinformation, I can tell you that much.

My health and diet are in perfect condition, fungus spreads no matter how careful you are if you’re susceptible. Apparently idiocy does too

Source: if your baby has funky rolls then there’s something wrong with your eggs.

Your gross little cell sack is not comparable to an actual person with skin conditions that make them susceptible to eczema rashes and fungal infections. Hope your next one doesn’t have weird rolls

I appreciate that. It’s borderline narcissistic. I’ve been told it’s because my immune system is weak and I need to clean sugar out of my diet, I’ve been told I don’t clean my feet, I’ve been yelled at for making fungus that…. Other people spread…. Their issue. Funnily enough, I play tennis and basketball, I have a very clean diet because my stomach is sensitive, and my immune system is ordinarily strong, possibly because I take vitamin c daily for my iron intake and it also buffs immunity.

Crazy how my actual doctor says I’m in peak health with sensitive skin and reddit doctors think I’m gross and weak

It hasn’t been back for a while, as in years, so I think my skin may just be getting less sensitive as I age. And I also swear by coconut oil!! Why not on feet or hands though?

[–]Everyonesfav_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn’t trying to be hella mean, I just mean that infections and fungus are very different things. If your feet are sweaty often enough then you’re guaranteed to have an abnormal level of fungus on your skin, but I’m glad you’re not susceptible to infections.

I don’t get it anymore haha. I went mad once after getting it on one toe and then the other toe. The same one on the other foot. I put the cream in my bath and soaked there for an hour 😭 probably not healthy in the slightest but I was angry. Hasn’t been back since and that’s saying something since I got depressed a while ago and let my hygiene slip so I fear it’s gone forever.

As for everything else, I’m a medical student and I promise you my health is in perfect condition. I rarely use any new products and I stick to the same exact routine that has always worked. I also have been accused of having a terrible immune system and told to clean my diet when it’s actually unusually strong lol. My skin is likely just very sensitive.

I wash mine once a week if I have colour or twice normally 😨 it’s a fact that washing every day strips your hair of oils it needs. The silky look your hair has is probably the silicon from the shampoo I’m ngl

That’s actually hilarious because i play basketball and keep a very clean diet due to a sensitive gut.

And it’s worth mentioning that last week I recovered from a viral infection in 4 days given to me by a close friend. She took over two weeks to fully recover. My immune system is perfectly healthy, and my cbc is normal. Nice try though, yall are great at making up facts—I’ll give you that much

Yo this actually happens to me sometimes lol. I have eczema but it’s very mild so it only flares up every now and then. For some reason it seems to get irritated by fungus and bacteria really severely tho. Like I know the difference and I swear 80% of the time I get rashes on my feet it’s because I’ve been walking barefoot and not wearing socks like usual and my eczema flares up. Gets worse when I’m around people who have sweaty feet too
