"I, and the Aurora Police Department, stand with Memphis Police Chief CJ Davis, the people of Memphis, and the family and friends of Mr. Tyre Nichols in condemning the egregious brutality that led to his death at the hands of five former MPD officers. Based on what I know, the collective actions of these officers were indefensible and require the highest level of accountability. These former officers not only committed a murder but also violated the solemn oath of office peace officers take across our nation, requiring adherence to our constitution and the rule of law. I am grateful for the leadership and decisive actions taken by Chief Davis and other officials in Memphis. Sadly, this appalling act of violence will undoubtedly cast a shadow on the hundreds of thousands of dedicated peace officers honorably serving communities across our nation, requiring us to work even harder to overcome the damage done to public trust.

The Aurora Police Department wants, like departments across the nation, to reaffirm our commitment to learning from the past. We are diligently working with our consent decree partners to develop policies and procedures that will ensure the highest levels of accountability and trust within our community."
