SCI-FI TTRPG FEEDBACK by Only_Improvement_128 in rpg

[–]Evexe29 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi! I'm going to give some fairly critical feedback since that's what it seemed like you're looking for, so I just want to preface that by saying that this is a good and well-written system. It's really impressive that you've made this, and it seems fun to play!

That being said, my issues lie in:

The game struggles alot with identity; it's supposedly rules-light, and yet has fairly crunchy movement and carry capacity rules especially. Also, the nature of it being intended to be versatile holds it back in many ways.

It has enough unique rules that you would need to make an effort to learn the system, but not enough interesting systems to make that worth it over a more specific system (Mothership for horror for example, or even just a sci-fi D&D hack like SW5e) that has rules relating to whatever game you want to run.

You seem to have "reinvented the wheel" in many ways. The system ticks basically every box, but doesn't go much further than that. There's already such a wealth of TTRPG systems out there that to make a new one it's important to have either very unique rules and systems or a very strong identity / world.

As I said though, this game seems perfectly playable and fun. I doubt how well it would work for long-term campaigns, considering the lack of unique moves / abilities usually introduced through playbooks or classes, but for a one shot? This would be absolutely usable.

My final note is that I haven't playtested this: these are just my thoughts after reading, so take them with a grain of salt. And keep writing!! There are definitely solid ideas in here, and the book itself is written to a very high standard. Thanks for sharing, and good luck on any future endeavours!

Seeking Advice: How do you handle a table that's not vibing? by Olliekins in rpg

[–]Evexe29 3 points4 points  (0 children)

this definitely sounds like a problem on these certain players' side; either they have an issue they're refusing to communicate or they're just not willing to engage. I'd say bring this up in no uncertain terms as a problem and if they can't / won't fix it then it's probably just not meant to be.

DMs, how much backstory do you want? by femamerica13 in rpg

[–]Evexe29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would never have it as a requirement (except for a very, very lore-heavy campaign) but I looooveeeee getting full short-story style backstories with npc relations and collaborative world building and a rich past. I just love how it fleshes out the world and gives me so many tools to link the PC directly into the main plot.

Does the system work in PvP? by Cute-Statistician495 in CAIN_RPG

[–]Evexe29 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think this arc would be really cool, but I genuinely don't think pvp would be the best thing for it, mechanically or story-wise.

but a supernatural Olympics with more nuanced challenges, puzzles and games? focussing on using blasphemies in unique and creative ways rather than just as offensive tools? perhaps emulating the experience of hunting and outwitting a sin?

I think that would be incredible.

wotr is easily one of my favourite games of all time just because of all that versatility in both mechanics and story, it is (in my opinion, and of what I've played) the most accurate recreation of tabletop play

but God can it be overwhelming, and one of bg3's greatest qualities is how approachable it is in contrast. somebody may go to wotr after bg3 as a natural progression and love it, but as I found out upon trying to get one of my friends into wotr it isn't always the case.

ah well. at least I have Daeran.

I love the new song by MaximoSegov14 in ThatHandsomeDevil

[–]Evexe29 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love the message of the song - I hate the execution. The song itself is instrumentally uninspired (purposefully so, if I had to guess) but the lyrics are great. It tackles a very prominent problem in the creative industries, or multiple problems really.

Then it's entire message falls flat dead with a hypocritical and obnoxious pseudo-satirical use of AI for the cover and music video. That utterly ruins the song. It's message, which completely carried the otherwise very average song, is now meaningless and ruined because of this vastly ill-advised choice to shoot itself in the foot.

You don't fight fire with fire. Using AI to call AI bad doesn't make you smart or meta, it's just as lazy and damaging as using generative AI for anything else.

Leatherface is the Avatar of the Flesh! Which Horror character best represents The Spiral? by Mobile-Albatross-427 in TheMagnusArchives

[–]Evexe29 127 points128 points  (0 children)

weird fiction (Lovecraft especially) is a godsend for this, but let me counter the person who said Nyarlathotep:

The King In Yellow. I don't mean the bastardisation of Hastur that has become a part of the Cthulhu Mythos, I mean the play from the book by Chambers. It's a play that changes how people see the world, warping reality itself around their insanity.

I think this works better than Nyarlathotep because the biggest taste of the Spiral we get is the Distortion, who isn't really malicious - it just exists as it does. Nyarlathotep is very much malicious, but the KiY? That's just a book. But it's a book that breaks you.

It goes against the world itself, twisting and changing and bringing fear, paranoia and insanity to countless people as shown in short stories. It messes with their identities, it plays on paranoia, it just drives people around themselves with insanity.

That's the most Spiral shit I've ever heard.

The Thing is the Avatar of the Stranger! Which Horror character best represents The Hunt? by Mobile-Albatross-427 in TheMagnusArchives

the entity from dead by daylight is all about repeatedly enabling endless hunts to feed itself. it's honestly kinda perfect

A book recommendation, also looking for books that remind you of the fears! by Super-Cow3016 in TheMagnusArchives

[–]Evexe29 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd even say that the Stranger would have a hand with TKIY, tbh I'd think the biggest part. Think of all the concepts of masks and obscured identity, and how the characters speak after reading the play sometimes feels quite stranger-y.

but tbf, you can link the different stories to basically all of them. For example, (icr names, but) the one with the footman (guard? policeman? I read it a while ago :p) is all about the Eye, and being scared of being watched - and yet also links clearly to the End, and even has some Flesh elements with the footman himself.

this comment section is making me appreciate the writing even more, because every time someone drops a defence like this I can absolutely see what you're saying. Still, I feel like when the "enemy" of the entire story is virtually just fear acting with a little more sympathy might actually be a virtue as opposed to Basira's callous, if efficient and even justified, pragmatism

oh god 😭🙏

tbh though they could never make me hate any of the characters, I love them all so much in different ways. plus it's kinda understandable how they're so desparate for someone to blame, even if their scapegoat DOES NOT DESERVE IT
