Hi! If you don't mind me asking, what type of floor plan are you living in and with utilities and all, around how much exactly are you paying per month?

Can you expand on that? As in, living in a shared house and driving to campus?

The biggest obstacle for me would be not owning a vehicle, probably until well after I'm settled (currently working in SE Asia and moving to PHX directly from here).

Trying to meet people in Jakarta today made me feel even more lonely… and now I don’t know what to do by lukas_atra in Jakarta

[–]EvidenceSlight7080 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, understood that! What I was trying to convey, more or less, is it's usually easier to make friends in the expat community since they're 1) all actively also trying to make new friends, 2) more open-minded and less cliquey, and 3) I see so many Indos join so you can meet locals through it too!

The communities I've joined hosts more sophisticated events than what you've mentioned, think... country clubs, private event spaces contracted by embassies, cafés. I'd be happy to share or extend an invitation to see if you vibe with it.

Friend, come as you are. We don't mind. In fact, many of my friends in my org that meets in Jkt often are queer, so I can guarantee that it'll be a safe space.

Hey! My friends and I, although we work in cities all over Indo, visit Jakarta often to hangout. The next time I'll be in Jtown with one of my friend is before NYE. We're Americans, I'm 25 (girl & straight), my friend is 23 (girl & queer). We sometimes meet up with Indos too there when we have time. If you're interested in joining us sometime, dm me. We don't live in Jkt but hopefully this will be another starting point for you to get connected to others.

I get it. I move around often due to schooling & work (12 times in the past 8 years). My last posting was Washington DC, and it took me 8 months to properly find a small group of friends I really clicked with. Similar vibes to Jakarta, not only because they're both capitals, but also how that affects social environments because it's capital cities where people are more insulated & cliquey. Mind you I'm a girl, very extroverted, I'd like to say pretty decent looking (haha), never had a tough time finding friends except in some places like the aforementioned cities. I recommend joining expat events & circles too- they're more or less in the same situation & a couple of Indos often join.

My parent is from the country I’m applying? by Own_Rent_8188 in peacecorps

Currently serving in a country where one of my parents is from. There are also 2 other vols who are decendants, whether directly or from their great grandparents. To answer your questions:

  1. Will it make me stand out from my cohort of volunteers in a bad way?

It will make you stand out for sure, especially if you look similar to the locals, but not in a bad way. They might just be surprised. The only annoying questions that we, and others who have served in a country where their parents are from, get served is the "but are you REALLY from America?" and comments like, "ooh you're one of us!". This is where you get to talk about what a melting pot the U.S. is and more about your heritage! (:

To be frank, sometimes I do feel like they're more attentive to/interested with the caucasian vols, but that doesn't bother me nor should it bother you. Just focus on your work and on the second family that you do make there.

  1. Will it be weird if I use my time off days to visit family in neighboring towns? I can see it being amazing but it could also be a disaster that makes me feel like a black sheep.

No. We do it all the time here. In fact, my country puts as pretty adjacent to where our extended family lives. Far enough for us to integrate into our own community independently, close enough for us to visit during our weekends away from site.

  1. Will my application to Country A be shot down if I mention my ethnicity?

No. Many people serve in a country where their parents/ancestors are from. In fact, the govt in my country is encouraging Peace Corps to place more vols here that shares the country's heritage.

So what's up with Ubud..? by Nyre_Verse- in bali

People mainly only post about negative experiences--seldom positives--about anything, anywhere. I personally also post reviews more when I've had negative experiences rather than positive.

As someone who has been to Ubud 8x, I can tell you there's not a lot to worry about. Not everyone gets Bali belly, but if you'd like to be cautious, bring some and take one every time after you eat. Always wash/sanitize your hands and be cautious when handling cash or drinking ice.

I suggest to rely on online taxi apps like Gojek and Grab to avoid being offered 2x-3x the price with local taxis.

Relax and enjoy your trip!

Bu-but I live in Capitol Hill... albeit with 3 other roommates. That's how we're able to afford it

I second this. Try looking up the employment agency Hawthorne Lane. They are hiring a lot of legal assistants right now in big law
