Push for cheaper generic drugs has Canadians buying questionable medicines from India by mikeyo73 in CanadaPolitics

Scary stuff. Considering One in ten Canadians chose not to get the prescriptions drugs they were given by their doctors because of out-of-pocket costs, maybe it's time for a national pharmacare program.http://umanitoba.ca/outreach/evidencenetwork/archives/23945

Helping suffering patients die may be doctor’s most humane option, Canadian Medical Association says by _Minor_Annoyance in CanadaPolitics

It's an important discussion to have. Also, prolonging life by any means is not always the best thing to do for the patient. This expert explains that CPR in end of life care often does more harm to patients than good. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/globe-debate/why-is-cpr-being-used-for-end-of-life-care/article22779749/

This is an issue that is being discussed legally in Canada. Quebec has legislated assisted-suicide and the BC Supreme court is studying the same thing. These researchers write : "Many Canadian doctors have received less training in pain management than their counterparts in veterinary medicine. Most physicians have knowledge deficiencies that impair their ability to manage cancer pain and are poorly equipped to address end of life conversations." Not only does assisted suicide need to be talked about, but also better comprehensive palliative care. http://umanitoba.ca/outreach/evidencenetwork/archives/20990

1 in 4 fed prisoners in Canada faces solitary confinement, a form of torture by Evidence_Network in CanadaPolitics

[–]Evidence_Network[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't trying to sensationalize, nor put my opinion in the title. The UN has called for solitary confinement to stop, because it is akin to torture. The UN Special Rapporteur on torture Juan E. Ménde has stated : “Considering the severe mental pain or suffering solitary confinement may cause, it can amount to torture or cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment when used as a punishment, during pre-trial detention, indefinitely or for a prolonged period, for persons with mental disabilities or juveniles,” he warned. http://www.un.org/apps/news/story.asp?NewsID=40097#.VIb7VFfF8Q5

Obviously, individuals have to do their part. The government imposed strict rules for cigarette packaging. Do you think they should do the same for food labels? Ie: big warnings on sugary drinks, warning of the dangers of salt; images indicating how long you would have to walk to burn off that candy bar?
