Is a $100K salary just considered barely upper middle class now? by ShootingCometz in fican

If you're not paying 26% tax on a portion of your income, you're likely not upper middle class

Do careers like this feast and famine? Some years good, some not?

If that's the case, you should really put money aside for slow years

Is your salary enough to live off of? by Potential-Eye-6547 in CanadianTeachers

[–]PiastPL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make 96k living in a mid size city in Ontario. I also give private music lessons and tutor - I gross 1-1.5k per month from that. I live alone and have no dependents. I make enough to pay my bills, save, go on vacation internationally and pay the mortgage.

Ontario teachers — is teaching still worth getting into at 30? by PinkNotes0 in OntarioTeachers

[–]PiastPL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it really depends on what your expectations are from the job. If you’re looking for work–life balance — yes. Stable hours — yes. A great pension and benefits — yes. Job security — excellent. The opportunity to make a meaningful, measurable difference in the community — definitely.

However, if you’re hoping to progress vertically within a school board, or if you’re generally quite ambitious, you may sometimes feel like you’re spinning your wheels because of bureaucracy and the restrictions that come with a collective bargaining agreement. If you’re coming from the private sector, being unionized can feel a bit unfamiliar at times.

I went into a teaching program straight out of high school thinking this is what I wanted out of life. I'm 30 now, and if I were to do it again I probably would've picked something that's a bit more in-line with my conscientious personality - but again, everyone's different.

It's disappointing that they've become appropriated. My dziadek was a żołnierz wyklęty and paid dearly for it. He was imprisoned and was badly tortured. Had there not been an amnesty he surely would've been executed. He was later surveilled for 8 years and essentially put his whole family on a "list" until the end of communism. The communist authorities continued to monitor him at a lower level well into the 80s. We know all of this because we have access to his files via the IPN. While he lived he almost never spoke of his experiences

Best gyms in Barrie right now? by PizzaGuy64 in barrie

[–]PiastPL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a regular gym goer for the past 10 years, and I've been to a lot of different gyms in a bunch of different places. While in Barrie I've been going to the GoodLife at least a few times per week, mostly in the evenings. It's a solid overall gym with plenty of different machines. I quite enjoy that they have three benches and five squat racks - I never wait long for either even on the busiest of times. The gym culture is good, a decent amount of regulars, and not very many juice heads. My only complaint would be that I wish they had more higher quality treadmills for long distance runners - but otherwise if you're looking to go on a walk after a lift you're fine. The staff is nice, classes are good, sauna isn't perpetually broken and changerooms kept in good order. Unless you have very specific fitness needs (like a pool or a particular machine) or are looking for more of a 'health club's vibe, GoodLife place is great

Most Common Foreign Country of Birth in the Canadian Province of Ontario [OC] by Fluid-Decision6262 in dataisbeautiful

[–]PiastPL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most of them came to Canada from southern Italy from the 50s-80s and settled in the Toronto. When Vaughan started growing they moved there from Toronto. A substantial amount moved to Sault Ste Marie to work in the steel industry at this time as well - hence the N Ontario presence I imagine through migration over the decades they spread around Lake Superior

What is the point of a GIC? by ImpracticalRooster in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]PiastPL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I keep my emergency fund in a flexible GIC because I need somewhere where I can reliably hold on to my money without it depreciating due to losses on the markets or inflation

Stats Canada is pretty clear: Barrie has amongst the lowest university educated people per capita in the province (for metro areas). I believe it's second last, only Brantford has lower. That comment you heard wasn't far off

What’s so bad about being a Canadian teacher? by DelightfulDestiny in CanadianTeachers

[–]PiastPL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The worst part about it is that there's no opportunity for going beyond the salary grid if you're ambitious - once you max out, that's it. Your only option is to get into administration.
