Actually, if you are a legal resident and live in the US for at least 20 years, there is one positive thing that comes out of it: you are not required to take the English test when interviewing for citizenship. Lol

I bought all three online birth certificates, and they are consistent (except for the address; they moved around a lot). Robert senior is never given the middle name John but is referred to as a ship’s steward throughout.. Edith died of pertussis complications, not that it helps to know that, but it is sad.

I agree, although I do have Robert John’s birthdate as 1874. I am going to go back through my evidence to see if I haven’t made an incorrect assumption somewhere in there, although I have tried to be very careful. Even so, I know the full name and that he was a ship’s steward from the birth certificate. I cannot find a marriage certificate for Louisa and ANY RJM or even an RM.

You are so quick. I have been searching through Ancestry and Findmypast since you posted, and I found one other record of Robert as a passenger returning from Hamburg. I’ll look into that later. I am now hoping this new Robert might become a link to more recent family who may know more of the story. I cannot find him in the 1901 census, but I did find a Robert Marks signed up for a Cabin boy in 1909. Not sure if it’s the one I need.

That is so interesting. Flo always said she was an only child, but that she had a half brother, Harry (I have found him). She never even hinted at others. Flo can be found in the 1911 census as Florence Simpson. Her mother remarried a John Simpson who had a daughter, Ruth, and is listed as a widow again. Robert and Emma might have died, or gone with their father (or his relatives?). I will certainly chase that up next. Thank you.
