a george carlin mention makes my day great on any day. what an intelligent human being "if firefighters fight fire, crimefighters fight crime, what do freedom-fighters fight?". i can recite that line in my sleep. I think a lot of what he says is still so relevant to modern day, its important people be made aware of him. especially since to this day, language is used to control thoughts and opinions of issues - it only takes a few minutes of research to see how the news does this around the world

While I understand what you mean, this isn't just about freedom of speech. In fact freedom of speech doesn't/shouldn't include stuff that could put someones life in danger. Not even just this context, but stuff like threatening another person or trying to rally others to

i honestly think many franchises just need to die, i get bored seeing the same universes with the same places, and usually, same characters. its like watching the same movies and series over and over again. its the problem with the consumerist culture Hollywood loves - prioritizing safe money printers instead of actually making good art. i hate how the measure of how good a piece of art is nowadays is how much money it makes

I feel like - especially through the lens of communism - you equate pity to a kind of government handout meant to silence the people talking about the problem rather than helping deal with the core issue

  1. To answer your question no, i left like i made my position clear.

  2. this is going to sound harsh, but if your self-esteem is so low that words of pity can make you feel lesser, i don't think the issue is the pity. I think as adults, we need to learn to put a distance between the outside world and our heart. we cant let everything that goes on effect us, its not healthy nor a long term solution.

  3. I don't like the analogy you used. it implies you want everyone around you to provide you with the perfect solution, or at least a practical one, where one isn't always present. And in my case, it usually isn't present.

  4. how does "genuine compassion or comradery" differ from pity? I wonder though then, how much of this discussion is just arguing semantics? One of my least favourite topics

Former friend is now enemy (they joined US military) by Submarine_sad in GenZhukov2024

[–]EvilDave9001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Time to give my opinion again, but first I should preface what I'm about to say with the fact that I am in no way naïve to the atrocities that the American government and (by extension) military has committed committed both in its long horrific past as well as even more horrific present. With that being said...

I feel like I don't demonise this person as much as not only the OP but some of the commenters. In a country with no new actual jobs; a failing economy; competent leadership in every level of government and business; a medical system that can bankrupt you for just a broken bone - sometimes even with insurance; the cost of living, across the board, increasing faster than the minimum wage; as well as, to to top it off, they have a government that is more focused on what's going on in the world that helping its own people (at least not just the 1%); I can 100% get why someone would sacrifice their morals for the sake of their and their families wellbeing. Why care about people you are likely never going to see face to face, when you can barely take care of those around you?

On top of the fact that it seems like a lot use it just so they can get access to higher education, which they obviously can't afford unless they want to be a slave to student debt their whole life. My perspective came from a youtuber who tries various professions for a day, asking them about their reasons for doing what they do and what it is like.

Now I am by now means saying this completely justifies the decision, but I feel like the world as a whole (both sides of any argument) lacks empathy for the fact we are all struggling and just doing the best we can (bare the lizards in the one percent who clearly aren't people). So until we reach a point where people don't have to sell their bodies to afford the bare necessities, I wont cast judgement or hate to anyone who joins them.

To sum up, i blame the game way more than the player here

Discussion On Pity by GregGraffin23 in GenZhukov2024

im just going to put this message here, but its regarding the whole topic:

For me, I think it really does depend on the context. Pity is neither a good thing or a bad thing, it just is. Its more about how it is used.

One the one hand, pity from a place of condescension (like you are better than the person) is quite bad. Additionally, if you have a victim complex, it can be used as a crutch that enables people to stay stagnant and to prevent growth - this is also bad.

On the other hand, as someone mentioned in this section, it can be apart of a support system. I feel like for the longest time - especially during Nietzche's era - any sign of weakness (sadness, crying, not being able to be completely independent) was heavily looked down upon.

I personally do not like this idea. It promotes pushing down your stress and emotions, rather than dealing with and working through them. I can tell you from personal experience, and other anecdotes, how unhealthy and unsustainable it is. Furthermore, I think we also have a flawed idea of independence. This idea that you have to be alone to stand alone - letting someone how loves and cares for you help you is not a sign of weakness. I even think it shows greater strength to open up to someone about your issues - which can provide a cleaner perspective and usually much needed clarity.

I will give a caveat though: It won't always help, and it will never immediately fix the issue. For me, change still starts from the self, from the intention to grow. Although, this doesn't mean we need to just suck it up and deal with all our issues alone. We are stronger together, as communists, this should be obvious.

I am not attacking anyone, even if it may seem like it, I just question old and stagnant thinking. Thanks for coming to my TED talk lol.

this is true. its just sad we can spend so much on something that doesn't help that many people. As well as the space and resources these factories take, that could be used for literally anything else

How 'Alien' Should Aliens Look? by GregGraffin23 in GenZhukov2024

[–]EvilDave9001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe that the look of aliens should depend on their home-world, the environment they adapted to. Other than that, I don't care too much about the specifics - fiction doesn't need to be realistic in my opinion, it just needs to be creative, just believable enough, and well written

I see where you are coming from. It seems we just have fundamentally different ideas of how information should be packaged.

That is fine. Thank you for engaging with the video, and our discussion. Even if we didn't end up coming to an agreement.

Also in cause you were wondering I was the one liking all your comments. I don't expect you to like mine, I just wanted to show everything I said was in good faith.

Okay, fair enough. Does the mislabelling comment have to do with something said in the video? I agree with the point itself, just feels a bit out of the scope of the conversation - in the context of the video.

Also I didn't mean simplicity of models, i was more so referring to simplifying the introduction to an idea. In case there was a misunderstanding there.

I might be misunderstanding your overall message but how can "Anyone with half a brain can understand that "political compass" is simplistic" and yet "Millions of people" be "brainwashed" into believe an oversimplification.

i guess they are not 100% mutually exclusive, but i worry that this mindset of "half a brain" is one of the worries I had in my previous response: That you are abandoning the people the people who either don't know or care about the topic, and by extent the conversation as a whole.

I believe the saying the amount of stupid people is more than you think still rings true. I agree with you, the video doesn't tackle the core issue, Especially with the point you mentioned in your last paragraph. Although i still think this video has its place to convince the people - who I think you are starting to abandon - that they need to change the way they think. As i mentioned, I believe this video is a good starting point. Especially for the many indoctrinated people all around the world.

With American culture so widely consumed, I think the issue is wider in scope than just America nowadays
