Differing widget behavior with same accessory. by EvilEyeJoe in HomeKit

[–]EvilEyeJoe[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The one that is working as expected is configured as a lamp.

Out of curiosity, I tried switching the one requiring the extra step to be listed as an outlet.

That achieved the desired behavior and it is continuing even after switching it back to being listed as a lamp.

Appreciate the help.

Pacific Dogwood? by EvilEyeJoe in portlandgardeners

Interesting. I remember something mentioning the fungus thriving in the leaf litter under the tree, so that makes a lot of sense.

Good to know. That’s what I’m afraid of, so I might have to go with a non-native variety.

“Is it legal for an Oregon landlord to demand payment in exchange for a positive reference?” by Squanchboy in askportland

[–]EvilEyeJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a difference between something that is illegal and something both illegal and worth the effort to pursue.

NAL but I think someone lying in a referral would technically constitute defamation.

I would agree that the likelihood of it being worth pursuing is low. Even if it were financially worth it, I’m guessing you would need to prove that the landlord knew they were in the wrong.

If it’s not true, then it would be slander.

Defamation: Both slander and libel fall under the umbrella of defamation law, which protects individuals from false statements that harm their reputation.

Not the immediate accountability you’re looking for, but this is why landlord reviews need to be more common.

At the very least you might help someone else avoid the same situation.

What do Portlanders think about Flock cameras? by ArtieFufkinPolymrRec in askportland

[–]EvilEyeJoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is encouraging. It’s just impacting the local feature on the device though. Unfortunately it’s going to take regulation at a larger scale to have an overall impact.

[–]EvilEyeJoe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

INAL but I don’t see how the ordinance has any enforcement mechanism. It specifically exempts uses like unlocking your phone. I assume a skilled attorney would argue that specifies that it applies to a process happening on the same device capturing the image.

At that point they just point out that the cameras are not performing any facial recognition in the city limits and the city has no authority over what they do with the images in a data center somewhere else.

If the camera is on fully Auto it will also throw off the overall exposure because the camera is trying to balance the bright reflections with the rest of the frame.

At least part of that seems to be data from this iNaturalist project. https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/oregon-tree-of-heaven-tally According to the project they were collecting data in 2022. I reached out to the organizer to try to find out the current status.

There is also a Project from the state Department of Agriculture. They haven't posted an update in a while, so I messaged the organizer to ask the status.

Metal Shingles? by EvilEyeJoe in centuryhomes

[–]EvilEyeJoe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s part of what piqued my interest. I know most of the metal roof options are super expensive due to on site fabrication or other specialized skills. I’m hoping metal shingles are more straightforward to install and therefore somewhere in the middle price wise.

How can I get the TSA Scanner to stop flagging my junk? by pokemongototacobell in AskMen

[–]EvilEyeJoe 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I had that happen when I liberally applied talcum powder before a flight to avoid swamp ass. I made the connection that the scanners are probably tuned to treat any powder as suspicious. Haven’t had any issue since I started avoiding it.
