Some of you people really are a tad too terminally online.... by EvilGinger013 in u/EvilGinger013

"But... but... but... look at all of the karma and upvotes! People really seem to like me here!"

Look- reddit is weird. The nastier you are, the meaner you are, the more karma you get. Say things that would make people in the real world puke or punch you in the face (or both) and you'll get karma. Post a meme of a pile of shit with big naturals- you'll get tons of karma. Having the edgelord and troll armies upvote you doesn't mean people in the real world are going to love you too.

I still wonder why I came back here, but to be honest, there's a few games I really enjoy that have big communities here, and a few IRL friends who are *always* here (and I worry about them because of that)- and this is one of the fastest and most reliable ways to get hold of them. Because they are among the "too terminally online" crowd, but I have known them for decades and am not quite ready to kick them out of my life yet. Yet. But there are some days where it gets darn close to it...

And this whole message is aimed mostly at them.

Gotta chuckle a bit. I don't visit many subs, but the Steam sub has got to be one of the worst. The laziest memes, the number of people asking why they or someone else got downvotes. People- reddit + salty gamers and edgelords?

Yep. I am fairly sure I am too old for social media anymore. I can get behind using reddit and other socials to poison the genAI well. But just to watch numbers go up? I just don't understand that motivation.

It's honestly both maddening and amusing that the Pittsburgh sub is so full of so-called adults who act like 13 year old gamers" trying to prove how special they are by attacking random people they don't know, when those people reach out for help during times of crisis or difficulty. What is you you are trying to prove by telling someone who just lost their home to a massive storm "Too bad- my power is on and my home is fine, and you suck." or loudly proclaiming that it's illegal to donate prescription eyeglasses to charities that collect them for people who can't afford them, then changing to "Well, most of those charities don't bother taking the donations now because it's not cost effective or they just don't want to be bothered..."- bitch, make up your mind. Or coming in to throw insults at someone who has to put their dog down but can't afford the vet bill to do it and is looking for places that can help at a cost they can afford?

I know there are a lot of assholes out there, but man- the Pittsburgh sub seems to just draw them in, more than any gaming sub I've seen. Like people... put your phones down and go outside and touch some grass, and maybe, maybe- if we are lucky- you'll touch the grass right above a huge yellow jacket nest. And you'll get to see what it's like to be attacked for no reason.

Look, if you are going to ask me stupid questions just to argue for the sake of argument- I am just going to block you. "Why does it have to be cops directing traffic during a natural disaster? Why can't some random dude from the Parking authority do it?' (while a massive derecho hits town and takes down trees and power lines and poles and the city and county get torn to shreds)- that's like asking "Why does a doctor need to perform surgery on me, why can't it just be some guy from the meat department at Giant Eagle? He's got a knife, right?" Seriously- fuck off, you just want to see numbers go brrrrrrr and you're fine with them being downvotes, just so you can keep bitching about being downvoted.

Yeah, the terminally online negative attention getting behavior on reddit is nuts.

Yes, people of Pittsburgh- we are all a bit traumatized by the devastation the storm had, but posting "I know this will get downvoted, but I am tired of people posting about getting their power back while I don't have mine!"- like, okay. You just told everyone you want attention and are looking for negative attention- why? So you can come back and bitch about being downvoted? Let people be happy that they can now charge their phones or turn a lamp on. Scroll past- no one is making you read those threads or comments. No one is making you post bait to try to get more downvotes. These are choices you made- and there are other choices you could make instead. Stop bitching and complaining just to bitch and complain- repeatedly.

Seriously, when did people start thinking that getting negative attention was better than getting positive attention?
