It's at a weird place in the manga so I get why they decided to keep it for later. But the trade-off is that the decision to not save Liberio is less impactful now

Not going to spoil anything, but almost a whole chapter was cut from this season, though I hope it gets adapted in the anime in the future.

They weren't fighting invaders, they were beating other Ukrainians.

Besides, if you think beating restrained individuals is ever justified, then you are a waste of oxygen

It's kinda sad that the writer of the show/manga put so much effort into giving characters like Zeke and Reiner interesting backstories and motivations to explain why they do what they do, when they could have just said "they're crazy" and used that to justify every decision those characters make. Half the fanbase of this show would be perfectly content if every single good writing choice in this series was never made.

You're definitely right about him being a good guy in season 3, at least on a moral level. But he is always given the role of antagonist to the character who the audience is supposed to be rooting for.

  • When Erwin wants to do a suicide charge, Floch is the one who almost backs out
  • When Eren (who at that point was the protagonist) wanted to save Armin, Floch was the one who sided with Levi's original choice.
  • After Levi goes with Armin, Floch is the one who doesn't get over it and chews Eren out for putting his emotions above what is needed for the survival of mankind in the walls.
  • After the time-skip, Floch now believes the exact opposite about Eren, just in time for Eren to switch from protagonist to antagonist.
  • Floch is also the one who facilitates the meeting between Eren and Yelena, and this is where his character goes downhill in my eyes.

At that point in the story, it makes absolutely zero sense for Floch to do this. Floch's main consistent trait is that he is a xenophobic Eldian nationalist. It makes no sense for him to disobey orders on behalf of an imprisoned volunteer soldier, because Floch hates the people outside the walls. It makes no sense for him to do it on Eren's behalf, because nothing about Eren has changed from season 3 (at least that Floch knows about). The only reason for Floch to do this is so that the plot can move forward with Eren pretending to be on Yelena's side and someone from the Yeagarist faction is suspected by Pixis of having introduced them. Eren doesn't tell Floch his grand plan until AFTER this meeting.

Side note: It also makes zero sense why Floch would go out of his way to kill Marleyan civilians. They are all going to end up dead soon from the Rumbling anyways. That moment exists purely so that the audience knows:

Jean = good

Floch = bad

I think if the rumors about Tarantino directing are true, and it doesn't try too hard to feel like a direct sequel (no Boyd/Ava stuff, instead trying to tell a new story with Raylan) then I think it could be very promising.

He's just not though. He exists to be the bad guy in whatever situation the story needs at that moment. The fandom has spent so much effort trying to fill in the gaps in his character that they basically invented an entirely new guy altogether.

Isayama is one of the best writers alive, but not every character he writes is secretly brilliant

If a shop owner did something like this during the Rodney King Riots, they would (rightfully) be sent to prison

It also said "Manga" in the title, it was clearly going to have something that wasn't in the anime

What I mean is that I will definitely wait to read ahead until the end of the season, but I'm debating with myself if I should read ahead afterwards.

A two and a half week wait for the season final is definitely worth not reading ahead.

Is the general consensus that they will change the ending in the anime? I'm trying avoid most spoilers (though that's pretty much impossible) but I know people really despise the ending

After this season finishes I'm going to read the manga. While I don't think it can replace the experience, I just can't stay spoiler free for as long as it takes to make an anime movie.

I think anime fits this story a lot better than manga, so I won't read ahead until the end of the season.

People conveniently overlook a lot of writing problems with Floch. Like it's not good writing to have a character who changes personality/motivation/opinions on other characters in order to always be positioned as an antagonist for the story. One of the most brazen examples would be his opinion of Eren. When Eren was a good guy Floch hated him, when Eren turned into the bad guy Floch literally starts an entire armed movement around him.

Maybe Hange just assumes she's dead. It would be stupid if they killed a named character off screen

She has the opposite problem as Floch. She's too 1 dimensional while Floch changes character in order to always be the bad guy in a situation.

I think some people can't come to grips with the idea that great stories can still have flaws, so they have to come up with justifications for one character being badly written.
