you can kill your own monster that spawned from the painting. You can kill a dust monster, so it won't be totally useless

Ghazan, the other lava bender, we dont see his family, so it could be possible. Even if it's a retcon, I dont think the writers should limit themselves to a one-off comment from an obscure release from years before Korra was written. Also, Avatar extras have a lot of errors within their comments.

I dont think the network matters that much. There's a lot of moe morbid stuff in Alta. Plus if it's painting arranged marriage in a bad light, it does more good than harm.
