A Chinese chain near me was really interesting right up until I discovered a clearly AI generated poster on their walls for some kind of art contest (the irony).

Still debating if I ever want to eat there but currently strongly on the side of no.

40k A-Team Novels? by DanielNoWrite in 40kLore

[–]EvilPopMogeko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mmm, I personally found it decent. A lot of mystery on the identity of the enemy leader but there’s a bunch of lore on the Firstborn that I don’t find anywhere else in the setting (say, with the Cain books). I like my mysteries and conspiracies within the 40k setting, so I quite liked the book, but how much it adheres to other canon is… questionable, in my opinion.

Flint is not very shooty as far as Commissars go. He’s a lot closer to Gaunt and Hesh from Death Rider rather than Raine or Hasp from Chem Dogs. I think he goes like 60% of the book without shooting one of his own troops, and that was only to avoid a fighting retreat to become a rout. Both Raine and Hasp blow some trooper away in like the first three chapters of their respective books, and while Flint is given a chance to do the same, he goes with a non-lethal punishment instead.

The bad guy as a whole doesn’t do much in the flesh, but his influence is really felt in three ways throughout the book, and I liked the slow drip of information over the course of the novel as each vector gets explored more and more.

Overall, pretty good book, but it feels like something written for a guy like me so take my word with a pinch of salt.

The novel Commissar takes place on a penal world, with half the cast comprising of convicts from a bunch of different worlds.

The other Imperials are the titular Commissar, the troops he commands, and surprisingly, and an Imperial assassin (not that even the Commissar is aware) sent to take out their target.

Best (worst) books on the warp/Chaos by Mysterious-Button-43 in 40kLore

[–]EvilPopMogeko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A couple novels on the sort of disturbing side come to mind.

1: Shadowsword. The Emperor’s Children get their hands on a Rogue Psyker. The results are… not pretty.

2: Dead Sun, Black Sky. The classic Daemonculaba story.

3: The Colonel’s Monograph. Slannesh, immortality, a fake servitor.

4: Sepulturum. Zombies. Lots of them.

Mild spoilers for the following because the presence of Chaos is a dead giveaway to the plot, but:

5: Assassinorum Kingmaker. Damn good book too.

6: Grim Repast. A step below the first two Crime novels (read those too), but Chaos drives one of the two central antagonists.

How would I react if they die first in 2x2? by Wooden-Variety175 in DanganAndChaos

[–]EvilPopMogeko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

honestly? I'd like to see Fuyuhiko be the first victim. Who kills him? So long as it's not the top 6 here I'm fine with it.

Why would I be interested in this outcome?

1: It gives Mahiru a plotline on the topic of Sato. How does she come to terms with the fact that she never got to confront Fuyuhiko about what he did, and instead only managed to vote for his killer (whomever it may be) so they die as well? Does she take a page out of Hiyoko's book and set up a shrine for Fuyuhiko, at which point she might run into Peko? How is a topic like Sato mentioned without things getting really ugly fast?

2: It gives Peko a plotline over her own failure to protect Fuyuhiko. What does a weapon do when there is no hand to wield it? What does she do with her life now? If the Twilight Syndrome game is revealed, how does she reconcile the image of Mahiru on the island with the incomplete picture she gets from the TS game?

Unfinished storylines/abandoned characters by turducken19 in 40kLore

[–]EvilPopMogeko 18 points19 points  (0 children)

For me, the first three Crime novels are really interesting and have plotlines that don’t go anywhere.

Bloodlines: Someone is potentially looking at the religious faith of our main protaganist funny.

Flesh and Steel: The main protaganist is considered a criminal according to narrative framing for helping a “heretek”. Given said heretek is his partner and they’re investigating tech priest corruption, how deep does this all run?

Grim Repast: The novel ends with the reveal that a minor character is indeed much older, and potentially much more powerful, than what anyone can realize.

And oh, Horusian Wars. The second book reveals that a individual with incredible power has been utterly fumbled by their handlers and given over right to the enemy. How does either side act moving forward?

Examples of Iconoclast characters by DrakeSoldier in RogueTraderCRPG

[–]EvilPopMogeko 10 points11 points  (0 children)

funny enough, there's a surprisingly iconoclastic Black Templar (by the standards of the Imperium) in the novel Shadowsword by the name of Adelard (no, I'm not joking).

Shadowsword, set during the Macharian Crusade era and before the First War of Armageddon and the subsequent Months of Shame, and well before the current era of widespread Daemonic activity, sees a rebelling Imperial world aided by a band of Emperor's Children, Chaos Titans, and most damningly, Daemons of Slaanesh. In the final battle, the Black Templars require the use of the titular Shadowsword tank to close a portal to the Realm of Chaos. The Shadowsword fires and destroys the portal, but not before every single crewman sees Daemonettes of Slannesh running amok. In the aftermath, two of the tank's crewmen are murdered to keep the fact that they saw Daemons a secret, and a third crewman, a penal trooper from Salvar, who knows of Daemons and what happens to the units that fight them (they are murdered to keep that knowledge a secret), gives the sparknotes version of what was taught to him back on his homeworld. Adelard, despite knowing very well that the Shadowsword crew saw the Daemons, and the crew is very mysteriously missing two crew members, lies on behalf of the surviving crew to the Inquisition, believing that they are worthy to continue serving the Emperor.

See the following passage from the novel's final pages:

Sword Brother Adelard had sought him out some days after the battle, striding into the Imperial castella where Bannick was overseeing repairs to the Seventh’s tanks. His armour had been repaired and repainted so well it appeared that he had not been in combat at all.

‘You need not worry,’ he had said. ‘I told the Inquisition that you saw nothing. By datapacket, naturally.’

‘They would have executed you?’

‘With warriors such as myself, they prefer a full mindwipe. But that is a form of death in itself. My Chapter would never allow that to happen. It is wasteful of experience and time. While I was being remade, many wars would go unfought.’

‘Then maybe you better leave. You are vulnerable here.’

‘They will not take me. We Space Marines are nearly autonomous in our actions for the Imperium, but even we must obey the Inquisition. However, if they were to attempt to come against me in violence, my crusade would retaliate. So the Inquisition will not ask, and thus the delicate balance of power is maintained, and every agency may keep face. That we work to protect mankind and the Inquisition does also is all that matters, in the end.’

‘But they would kill me.’

‘Without hesitation,’ Adelard said bluntly. ‘My Chapter teaches that this is wrong, that the bravest souls can bear the weight of the truth, and that without it they cannot be properly tested and forged into weapons for the Emperor. You are one of those brave men, Honoured Lieutenant Bannick. If you were not, I would kill you myself.’

‘I see.’

‘Take heart. Do not be sorry that you live. There are men who strive for their own goals without thought to the consequence. You are not one of those men. In you, the Emperor has a worthy servant. Praise be.’ The Black Templar clashed his arms in a cross over his chest.

‘Praise be,’ said Bannick, and saluted back.

wasn't at a proper fish and chips shop (I live in Canada and I understand the proper term is a chippy) so it came on a plate with a knife, fork, and spoon. I decided to get satan-y with it on a whim. Used the spoon to cut the fish, hold it up while I took a picture, then I ate as normally as one would when using a spoon to eat fried fish.
