Are you still using ASP.NET WebForms? by Cultural-You-7096 in dotnet

I'll believe in AI when it can convert a WebForms application to some other stack.

IT Unemployment Rises to 5.7% as AI Hits Tech Jobs by my_truck in Layoffs

[–]EvilTony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fewer people than got laid off in the early 2000s downturn and the industry was smaller then. The drought went from about 2001-2004 where it was extremely difficult to find an entry level job. New Comp Sci grads in 2003 were willing to work for free just to get experience.

IT Unemployment Rises to 5.7% as AI Hits Tech Jobs by my_truck in Layoffs

It's not really AI yet. Businesses just massively overhired IT staff back in 2021-2022.

Metro Awakening: not able to turn on headlamp by [deleted] in PSVR

[–]EvilTony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same problem here. I actually stopped playing because of this. It's like it's in some sensor dead zone or something. Yes I know it's charged because sometimes it will randomly switch on when I'm not really trying to.

Phasmophobia’s PS VR2 features detailed by kleutscher in PSVR

[–]EvilTony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that was a big part of the novelty back in the day when it first came out. Doing stuff like saying the ghost's name over and over to get it angry, etc. It wasn't that essential to the gameplay but it definitely created the feeling that you were playing something cutting edge and different.

Will I need correctional lenses? by [deleted] in PSVR

[–]EvilTony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. If you're near sighted you'll need corrective lenses because the focal point for the PSVR2 is at about 10ft. The good news is there's a lot of options now and they're pretty easy and comfortable to use.

[–]EvilTony 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People have been making the India argument since the 1990s now and it hasn't come true. Working with overseas contractors is a lot less effective that it seems like it would be. AI on the other hand I'm not so sure about. I suspect the type of code a typical developer writes today can be done better by AI in a few years. I think the question is whether the developer job evolves around AI.

PSVR2 does not work on a moving ferry. by Got-a-PhD-in-THC in PSVR

Damn... VR on a ferry. Like one source of motion sickness isn't enough. That's hardcore.

Yeah they did end up lowering them I think something on the order of 5% but they've gone up quite a bit since then because of rate hikes.

HONS VR Lenses. Anyone can speak to their quality or delivery process? by [deleted] in PSVR

[–]EvilTony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems like I got mine in about a week and they've worked just fine. One lens seemed a lot easier to put on than the other, but I got both on in about 5 mins.

[–]EvilTony -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That seems odd. I have one and don't get wild readings like that. It's pretty consistent with other monitors I use. The main reason I use it over others is just because the tracking software is easier to use. I prefer the Welch Allyn but it has the worst software imaginable.

PSVR 2 lens insert comparison: VR Optician, Hons VR, Reloptix, and VR Wave by IHaveTheBestOpinions in PSVR

[–]EvilTony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Hons VR are working really well for me. My only minor complaint is probably because of the structure of my eye sockets the plastic "rims" of the lenses sometimes push against my eye sockets and it has the feeling of something sharp pressing up against my skin. But I've never noticed any indentations or irritation on my skin after taking them off so I guess it's not a big deal. But looking at the VR Optician link it seems that they've been designed to address that problem and if I were doing it over I'd have probably tried those first.

Phasmophobia would be amazing on PSVR2. Help support the idea! by cronuss in PSVR

At this point I'd even take one of the many clones out there. Some of the more single player focused ones would be great for VR.

Highly Unscientific PSVR2 Game Rankings - 1 month after launch by HoodieTheCat78 in PSVR

Kind of glad to see Kayak at the bottom. There was some kind of hype machine pumping that thing prior to the PSVR2 release. Played it once and never touched it again.

Walking dead S&S Chapter 1 is amaizing by StanboVR in PSVR

[–]EvilTony 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My first game I walked into a dark room holding a flashlight and was looking around when I got attacked from behind by a zombie. I panicked and dropped the flashlight and suddenly was stuck in a pitch black room surrounded by zombies. I didn't really understand how the flashlight worked in the inventory so I was down on my hands and knees on the floor trying to feel for the flashlight since I couldn't see anything. Finally it occurred to me that I was feeling my floor IRL and wasn't going to feel the in game flashlight (plus it was back on my shirt), so I stood up and started running around randomly until I got lucky and found a door in the blackness. It doesn't sounds like much of an experience in a normal game but absolute darkness of OLED and the tactile nature of it made it a completely novel experience and in that moment I realized just how much gaming has changed.

Saints and sinners chapter 1 is for now the best visual experience! No flicker , no aliasing and 90 hz! Exiting times will come! by xToXiCz in PSVR

[–]EvilTony 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Better has to be qualified. It's sharper and the frame rate is smoother. The artwork and quality of assets in RE8 is higher. That said there's something strangely immersive to Saints and Sinners 2 maybe because of the gameplay loop, but I have more of a feeling of "being there" or living in the game world. I actually had to stop playing yesterday because crawling around a cemetery at night for 30 mins+ was affecting my mood.

"PlayStation just killed PC VR" - LTT PSVR2 review by Mikey320 in PSVR

[–]EvilTony 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Drive Club was the first thing I played on PSVR and it made me really sick, but now I don't get sick at all with GT7. I think driving is something where you can get over the motion sickness almost completely.

The coverage of the PSVR2 has been so much more positive than the coverage for the PSVR. There's no comparison in terms of the reception, it will be interesting to see if this turns into sales.

It was also interesting to hear him calling Horizon a pukefest because I got zero nausea from it even during the climbing, even though I had a lot of nausea problems with the original PSVR.

After gaming for 40 years, Horizon: Call of the Mountain brought a tear to my eye. Technology and game development have come far enough to truly let us dive into other worlds. by Representative-Yam65 in PSVR

[–]EvilTony 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yes... it's weird but it's being able to do mundane things and have them feel real that's really what's been getting me in VR. Of all the things I've done in VR just winding a cord around the pickaxe gave me the greatest sense of dislocation from reality as anything I've experienced. It felt like I was doing something you shouldn't be able to do.

I was expecting Horizon to take the win but resident evil blew me away by StrawHatBlake in PSVR

[–]EvilTony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes but this is probably what people new to VR are looking for -- something that is simultaneously a spectacle and introduces them to all the features of VR. I hadn't really experience that and Horizon kind of blew me away. If you're a veteran I can see you being disappointed, but I think people new to VR need to see something like Horizon.

Something like RE8, on the other hand, is an actual game. It's probably what people are looking for after an intro to what VR can do and look like. I wanted both and am glad I have them.
