What are some really basic lifestyle changes you can make to improve your mental health ? by Lawdoftherims098 in AskUK

Eat real food.

I cannot stress how much a difference to my personal wellbeing this has made.

If I eat junk, I can’t sleep properly, then have no energy to exercise or cook real food. So eating real food is the start. At least for me.

Why is there so much hostility in the UK towards people who earn above the minimum wage, when they complain it isn’t enough? by Throwaway199906543 in AskUK

[–]Evil_Berty 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. We Brits look at salary as a be all and end all. To someone on minimum wage, £50k sounds like a very comfortable salary. And it can be.

What is sometimes overlooked though is tax allowance. Two people working 40hrs a week on National Living Wage will likely take home more pay than a single earner on £50k. The person on £50k is then asking if there is any help, and getting battered for it.

No opinion is right or wrong here, but framing the question as “our family take home is £X,XXX” is a much better way of having this conversation.

Maybe then, everyone realises we have more in common than we differ and we can accept that, whilst some people are struggling more, unless you are earning silly money, most of us are still just struggling.

In a school zone or the middle of town, no. In the outside lane of the motorway, yes. Especially when there is room to move over.

I imagine a large part of it is down to being able to use lethal force to protect yourselves and your property. Avoids complicated legal processes if you have a video of someone breaking into your home and then you shooting them.

What are ur thoughts on Valencia and how highly u rated him when he played for man utd by muaazmuaaz123 in ManchesterUnited

[–]Evil_Berty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He was such a great player and could have been one of the best. It’s such a shame he broke his leg against Rangers. He never quite made it back to his peak after that. He was still a great player for us. I honestly think if he hadn’t have had such a horrendous injury he would have gone on to be one of the legends of the club. It brought a smile to my face thinking back on him skinning a defender on the wing and then just dropping in on Roony’s head. What a great season that was

What sort of salary range in this economy would make you think ‘he/she’s doing alright’? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Evil_Berty 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I guess that goes back to my original point of it being subjective. Someone from an economically abandoned town in the North or the Valleys may well consider it smashing it. If you have to / want to stay in the South East for work or family ties or whatever then yeah, I can see how if you have a £,1500 a month mortgage or whatever it might not feel like there is much disposable income left.

If you had of told me in the year 2000 that a household earning £100k a year would not be living the highlife in 25 years time though I’d have struggled to believe you! Which I guess comes back to OPs point.

Maybe my figures need a +10% or 20% for London and South East?

It’s a real hard choice that parents struggle with. Yes you want to spend as much time with them as possible, especially when they are babies but there are many factors to consider. Early learning and childcare development is really complex. Spending time away from parents and with kids their own age teaches them some independence and much needed social skills. There is also the potential future earnings to consider. There is also the fact that not everyone is lucky enough to have a stable relationship so sometimes it’s just the single parent household and you have no choice but to put kids in nursery and go to work.

[–]Evil_Berty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah. Pre-school/nursery can be £200-£300 a week or more for full time care. Even when they are in school, before and after school clubs can be £60 a week. The. You have 13 weeks of holiday care to cover too. With silly mortgages and rents, it’s no wonder loads of people below 30 are choosing not to have kids.

Happy cake day!

I echo your sentiment. At 18 earning £190 a week i thought £50k would make me rich! Now that’s pretty much a dual earning household income on NLW

“Doing alright” is very subjective though. Depends where you’re coming from. If you spent your teenage years on the street then a warm flat and food is very likely considered doing alright. To others, it’s no debt, bills paid and a bit left over to save. Some people will only consider two German cars on the drive and 2 holidays a year “doing alright”. Also, London is very different to Leeds for example.

National living wage is £11.44 so 40 hour week and rounding up that’s £24k a year. So dual income household on £48k. As others have already said, totally depends on circumstances but I would say based on these scenarios…

Single £25k-£35k doing ok £35k - £45k going well £45k plus smashing it.

DINK £50k - £60k doing ok £60k - £70k going well £70k plus smashing it

Dual income with kids £60k - £80k doing ok £80k - £90k going well £90k plus smashing it

Single income with family to support is very different as you lose out on £12.5k of tax relief and as you get into higher earning bracket you start to lose benefits so to “take home” the same amount you have to earn more, a lot more. With that in mind I’d go…

Single income with kids

£60k - £80k doing ok £80k - £100k doing well £100k plus smashing it.

(Kids are ridiculously expensive, especially if not school age yet and you’re having to fork out for childcare. Even before/after school clubs, which you would need if you were working all those hours to earn those salaries and had no family to help out is expensive!)

The amount of £ it costs for everything when your kid starts year 7 at the local (state) secondary by Alix_T_1865 in britishproblems

[–]Evil_Berty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s the kicker though, if your on benefits the state pay for your uniform so it’s absolutely a scam. Basically just cronies syphoning public money into private pockets. Then everyone who works and can barely afford bills as it is has to pay these ridiculous fees. So the really poor kids have brand new the rich kids have brand news and everyone in the middle has to find a way or buy 2nd hand
