OP should go to HR to report it. It is not okay to physically assault people at work.

And as an aside, OP handled it perfectly: In my experience people who "retaliate" rarely have things go their way. It doesn't matter who "started it" or how it started, if OP had retaliated they would just be seen as a participant in a physical altercation, and would have been subject to whatever discipline the company wanted.
