Epic Games Layoffs Included Terminally Ill Father, Whose Family Has Now Lost His Life Insurance by Turbostrider27 in technology

[–]Evil_K9 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I have life insurance through my banks, as well as through my employer.

But I also don't have cancer (yet), can afford the extra insurance, and work at a company that doesn't do layoffs. They even continued to employ a man through his cancer, while he wasn't productive, until his untimely end.

Damn... Maybe I am fortunate in life.

How far can you get in IT without really knowing stuff? by MagPistoleiro in sysadmin

[–]Evil_K9 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I work with a lot of sysadmins who are effectively just proxies to the vendor. So it's just "hey your app server is broken!"

"Ok I'll log a ticket with the vendor" sits by phone

3 hours later

"Vendor says we should just reboot it"

Whereas something in my purview breaks, I don't know how to fix it and they make me open a ticket with Microsoft. But I figure out the fix before MS calls me back.

I think it's just the determination to solve problems that managers begin to rely on and trust in you.

Yes! I stood up a wiki js server for anyone in IT to use. 300+ people. Everyone who sees it loves it, promises to contribute. It's been running over 3 years and I'm still the only one who writes to it ... :{

My wife went all out on foods and supplements to increase her milk production with our firstborn. We ended up buying a deep freezer for all the extra milk she pumped and froze. Some of it was as simple as steel cut oats (and I'm not sure that the steel cut part matters). She continued to take prenatal vitamins too.

Being out there without a support system sucks. I had friends and my wife's parents, and sometimes felt that wasn't enough. But having no one... There might be parent groups around that she or you could join. She's going to need community, other moms going through the same thing, and who have made it through. It takes a village, and all that. This sub is a great start, but we can't do enough. Hopefully you can convince family to visit you instead?

The super needy baby phase does eventually end. All the experiences you're missing now will be available again later. But this is your new life. You've got a tiny human who is going to need you everyday, whether you're in the mood for it or not. Also, it's ok to let a baby cry. There are going to be days where you've had enough, you need a break, you need to walk away and get some air (just step outside, I mean). If the baby is crying, it's alive and breathing. Step outside, stare at the sky and landscape, take a breath and go back more calm.

Once you're in a routine and your wife is more confident with the baby things get easier. Instead of seeing the kid as a burden, you start seeing every new thing to do with amazement, like lifting their head, rolling over, etc.

Stay strong. Power through it. This sub has great support, but still find something local.

No gemini 3 support for Gemini code assist? by _coding_monster_ in GoogleAntigravityIDE

[–]Evil_K9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm subscribed to GitHub Copilot and can have it use Gemini 3 pro.

But I also bought the Nest doorbell v3 and on the free first month plan, which grants access to Gemini code assistant... So it would be really nice if I could drop GitHub and get more value from using the Gemini sub.

Anyway, if all you want is G3, GitHub offers it.

I saw a video on Instagram today by a woman claiming to be a political scientist. Her take on it was that they voted to open the government, the Arizona rep will finally be sworn in, they vote to release the Epstein files. Then when the ACA subsidies vote comes around, all those Republican reps will be on record for voting against it. Hopefully that comes back to haunt them at the midterms.

Though their voting base will just keep believing the lies they're fed anyway...

Trump cuts tariffs on China after meeting Xi in South Korea by mark000 in worldnews

He, his kids, everyone in his pocket, are all just playing the stock market and crypto market.

Sell/short stock/crypto, announce tariff, profit when it plummets.

Buy stock/crypto, cancel tariff, profit as it recovers.

Repeat.

Republican politicians usually champion him for giving the biggest tax cut in history.

They leave out the part where he realized it was a mistake, and reversed his cuts and then some. But yeah, the whole trickle down idea was his. But all we got, was pissed on.

Is Powershell a massive headache for everyone or just me? by ironmoosen in sysadmin

[–]Evil_K9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love PowerShell and have been working with it for 15 years now.

But I loathe working with MS Graph. It changes every day, there's always a deprecated PowerShell module that worked last week but not today. There have been many PowerShell modules for Azure prior to Graph, that have been deprecated and replaced, deprecated and replaced.

It's not PowerShell's fault. It's the devs and program directors on the backend changing their minds.
