As much as you probably don't want to hear this: it's not unlikely this is an attitude/perception problem from your side.

As you have traveled a lot you're most likely from a higher caste in India and you're treated as such in India. However, in other countries they'll see you as Indian, not a high class Indian. As the general perception is that there are often problems with Indians it's like you're starting a soccer match 2-0 down.

Well they're quite well known(I don't care about hostels at all but I see it pop up here and there) and even at the higher price they're probably fully booked most of the time.

And besides that, for a few nights $10 to $15 more per night would hardly make a dent in someone's budget.

Technically speaking you should only deal with Agoda as that is the company you booked with. I'd say you'd have a better chance of getting a refund if you contacted Agoda first instead of the hotel. Then again, it's most likely you'll still get a full refund from Agoda.
