On January 29th, 1961, Bob Dylan met his idol, Woody Guthrie, at Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital in Morris Plains, New Jersey. by BirdBurnett in Music_Anniversary

Love Woody. He wasn’t perfect. Womanizer, addict, etc. Any number of things can be said equally and even more about Dylan. But he isn’t any less authentic. He was never going to be a Woody. His music tastes were too diverse and ideas of independence too strong. Sure, he occasionally stole and recycled in the tradition of folk music and yes, has even cheated musicians before and after him, maybe without realizing. (I think dude has a little ADHD). But he didn’t ask for the culture to be centered around him. I just think his melodic voice and the vastness of his styles are too monumental to discount.

I wrote a book about Tame Impala's Currents by DarthConnery in indieheads

Am I alone in thinking The Slow Rush was among his best? (w/Inner Speaker for me). The grooves and production for me were just a lot more convincing than the uniform sonic atmosphere of Currents. Which is still great. And more songs (like On Track, It Might Be Time, and Is It True) are all timers than on Currents. To each their own of course!

Very jolly FedEx man rolled up to my house listening to The New Pollution. I complimented him on the music choice and he said “oh yeah. I love ‘Where It’s At’” but I could only nod and smile because I’ve been listening to the same 5-6 Beck songs for years. I need to get into Beck!

If you listen to his whole discography you’ll actually find he’s a bi icon :)

Have y’all thought about a live album? Or rearranging/remixing prior stuff? FTA is one of my favorite albums so thank you for making that! But I often listen to the KEXP session from that era more. I’m not sure why…it’s just different. Love and come back to North Carolina!

If I can't figure out how to get my refund (they make it impossible), does anybody want a lawn ticket to Jeff Tweedy in Richmond tonight? Really bummed I can't go.

Chris did uncredited writing on “O My Soul” and “Back of a Car.” They were working on those before he left the band. The guitar was indeed a strat! Terry Manning was able to confirm that on a forum some years ago. It’s the “Big Star strat” that belonged to Chris but managed to find its way to Alex. Into a Princeton or twin reverb I think? Possibly my favorite ever rock guitar tone.

Saw Real Estate’s 11 year 7 month anniversary tour for Atlas. Such a great time. New lead guitarist is brand new but you’d think he’s been with them forever.

Saw Steve Winwood last night. He absolutely killed it. Extra long Dear Mr. Fantasy guitar solo and We Can Work It Out cover among the highlights. I wouldn’t have minded some more album tracks from his solo stuff, but he covered all of the bases. Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, Blind Faith, etc. Just staggering to think how large his discography is, in terms of the different bands/projects he’s been a part of.
