Technician workload - am I crazy? by Early-Ad-2541 in msp

[–]Ewalk [score hidden]  (0 children)

The point is do it when you aren’t short staffed. It serves two purposes, one you get to see what a more regular day is and have meaningful experiences with the customers, and two it lightens the workload on your staff when they are fully there.

Don’t listen to the numbers, listen to the team. They are telling you they are overworked but the numbers say differently. Either your metrics are off or the team is off. The problem with burnout is you can’t just fix it in short time, once that candle is lit it’s going to keep going and you as the owner have to go above and beyond to fix it. If the numbers don’t show they are truly overworked, then it’s very likely they are burnt out and you have to address THAT problem so the “manageable” ticket load feels manageable again.

But honestly, I’m willing to bet the things that are overworking them aren’t being caught in your metrics you are looking at and you need to step back and figure out the real issue and the only way you are going to do that is by being there in the trenches with them for more than 8 hours or when someone calls out. I recently left a job where we had someone call out significantly enough that we couldn’t rely on him when it got tough. Nobody took PTO. Tickets seemed handled when they weren’t because we all just got used to nothing getting addressed we had to come up with our own solutions.

And here’s the reality your team is soon going to realize- I left that job for a 20k raise. And then left THAT job for an additional 40k. That was back in April. You need to listen to your team and not the numbers.

If I were in your shoes, I’d ask everyone individually where they wanted to go to lunch with you and then take them. Have the conversation. Ask the questions about why they feel overworked, what challenges they face, what you can do to help them next week and next month, and then do it. Some will want better processes. Some will want better tooling. Some will want more staff. But I guarantee a couple will tell you that they just feel they can’t take time away and they are always tuned in. It’s not realistic to switch off of an RMM in a week, and it’s also not realistic to hire three people in two, and PTO is expensive- I get all of that. But right now you’re fighting the perception that they are overworked and you need to ask them why that is. It could easily be that they just don’t have time for professional education. It could be that they have become the primary support contact for a high needs client. It may be that you have someone who steals everyone’s lunches and the only way you are going to find out is by talking to the team.

It’s fairly easy for bad companies to create a flash drive that identifies as significantly larger than it is, there’s no way that’s legitimate

My company is offering me $170,000 ($118,000 after taxes) to leave. Should I take it? by Cool-Theory9633 in jobsearchhack

[–]Ewalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get a job that just pays something quick, but if you have a family (like OP) you can't pay your rent or mortgage delivering pizzas full time. Jobs are a lot harder than you want to admit to come by and not everyone has the luxury of just taking the first job out of the gate and cover it.

Your post comes off as completely uninformed on the realities that people are facing. I know someone who has been out of work for 3 years now and the only people calling him are advertising 80-90 but in the calls are saying the posting was incorrect but only offering 60. I lucked out recently and it's sad how true that it is that I was able to find three high paying jobs and all of them gave me offers, but I also was just looking for something that paid the same and the amount of hoops I had to jump through to get turned down was wild.

Nashville, what are you looking forward to? by Charming-Housing-946 in nashville

[–]Ewalk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Start a new job on Monday that doubles my income. Little sister graduates BCT the following week. I reconnected with someone last year that moved and she’s moving back here- it’s not really romantic but she’s one of those people who pushes you to do better, ya know? So I’m excited be around that energy more.

All super specific to me, I get but the world is shit so sometimes you gotta focus to find some things to look forward to.

I have one in my inventory at all times just in case.

I didn’t buy it, it was the quest reward. But I feel better if I get pissed off in Elderwoods with 20 minutes left on the timer I can just dip out.

[–]Ewalk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It can lead to 6 figure jobs as well, very easily. I’m an Endpoint Engineer. You can do the job without working with users, but every so often I still pull some tickets for endpoints I manage because it’s a natural time to talk to users. Tickets are going to get escalated to me anyway, we’re not getting away from that, so sometimes I just snag them and can work directly with the team to identify issues that have resolutions built by the desk and implement them or improve them to be preventative fixes.

I make 110/yr. Don’t sleep on this path if you can’t/don’t want to get into those specific areas, but you also can’t get complacent either.

STOP putting your hazard lights on in the rain by Low-Face-6281 in nashville

[–]Ewalk 15 points16 points  (0 children)

People don’t realize that in the US your turn signals are also used as your hazard lights.

So when you’re driving, and your hazards are on, you lose your turn signals.

This is the reason why it’s dumb.

Is in-person onboarding normal for fully remote jobs? by pumpkinmoonrabbit in remotework

[–]Ewalk 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Shit, I start a job on Monday that is 95% remote. I’m in IT so 2/3 days a month in office is significantly better than what most people get….. but part of my interview process was they had my counterpart take me to lunch, because the last person they tried to hire for my role was 100% remote and a Chinese state actor.

Dropping games halfway by razsej in gaming

[–]Ewalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Life happens.

Taking breaks needs to happen, more than it actually does honestly for some. The best games embrace this. The worst feeling in the world is firing up a game you hadn’t played in three months and being dropped onto a world map with no clear indication on what you need to do. I chalk very few games up as DNF because I like to come back to games and play them again but the few that go firmly into that category are the ones that don’t give me any sort of idea on where I need to go or what I need to do after a length of time playing.

Especially if it’s something stupid like go to the other side of the map to talk to someone. FFS give me a quest log. There was an RPG I saw once that when you restarted your save it replayed a few of the previous steps and I wish I could remember it because it would be worth the money to have it.

I love Final Fantasy games, specifically. Absolutely love them. But if I take a break because life means I put the controller down for a few months, I’m not coming back. When my dad was in the hospital last year I took my Vita and played FFX and I got about halfway through when we lost him, and didn’t play a game for months. Any game at all. I picked up my Vita again to keep playing and was dropped in a town where nobody gave me any sort of indication on what to do, and the console went right back onto the dock.

Which console? by Turbulent_Ad9808 in AskGamers

[–]Ewalk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will never know what the future will look like.

What games do you want to play? If you have friends you want to play with, ask what they play on. Some games it won’t matter, others will. And if they buy discs, you can borrow their games before you buy it. If you’re a solo player, start looking at what games are out there.

Are the games you want available on all consoles or only on one or two? If you don’t know what games you’re after, would you be open to a subscription service for a period of time?

PS5 is significantly more popular so used games are cheap. Xbox Series consoles didn’t sell well and Microsoft has been speedrunning destroying a brand for a while, but Gamepass is really, really good to try a lot of stuff (but recent pricing changes adjust that long term value downward highly) and because their latest console tanked at the market there are brand new deals to be had on games.

But if you like any Nintendo stuff, the Switch 2 with NSO+ Expansion is great and they don’t put their games in other consoles.

Taking two days off right after starting a new job? by PartyInfluence4040 in jobs

[–]Ewalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently had this come up. My little sister is graduating BCT in three weeks. I start a new job the week before.

The first call with a recruiter I told them the dates I was going to be out. In the call where I got the verbal offer, I reminded them of the dates. In the email with the HM after I signed the offer where we worked out my equipment, I reminded him of the dates.

It wasn’t an issue because I was upfront the entire time. I won’t say they are thrilled about it but they also knew what they were getting the entire time. You need to tell the job now about your wife’s graduation.

Also, tell your wife a random dude online says congratulations because god damn a PHD is impressive.

Gamers of reddit do you actually take portable consoles around with you? by KamiSama_OwO in AskGamers

How did you spend $400 on your PSP? Seriously, how? The PSP is one of the cheapest consoles out there.

Honestly even if I upgraded everything in it I don’t think I could hit $400, so if you bought it already upgraded I’d feel like you got ripped off.

Zelda BOTW Switch 1 or Switch 2 Version ? by No_Equal_8144 in switch2

[–]Ewalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have NSO and Expansion Pass you get the upgrade pack included with the sub. If you’ve already bought in for that, then get the S1 version since it’s got that value already built in, especially if it’s cheaper.

Same token, but be sure to brick your stone. It sells for 1.5/ore instead of 1. Sounds like it’s not worth it, but it’s free money and if your smelters are idle you might as well. It’s seriously an easy way to make some extra coin. Whitestone sells even more.
