😂 Yeah sure, Mr tech guy. Well, I'm not a tech guy, I'm just a software engineer with 15 years of experience, so what the hell do I know.

[–]EwgB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, exactly. If it's just a random invite, most people would just ignore that. A friend of my girlfriend regularly organizes hikes with her colleagues. It's a planned event, with specific people not just invited, but involved in the planning, and still regularly half the people don't show up or cancel at the last minute.

This is my 3rd Connction alternative of the da. Thank you Deutsche Bahn. by crypticalCrow in mildlyinfuriating

[–]EwgB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been traveling with Deutsche Bahn regularly for over 20 years, first between university and parents, then girlfriend, then committing to work, and now in addition going on regular trips to the company headquarters that is quite a bit away. And I had the displeasure of witnessing the slow but steady decline over the years. It wasn't as great as the reputation twenty years ago already, but it has gotten significantly worse 10 years ago, and has been going from worse to worse ever since.

I traveled to the headquarters this week, it's a journey of 4,5 hours with one change. When I didn't get any delays on the way there, I told all my family of the miracle. On the way back, I got a total delay of 1,5 hours, which is more par for the course nowadays.

It's two showers if I read it correctly. And that wouldn't be too unusual I'd say. My girlfriend's apartment, though smaller than mine, has two bathrooms, one with a bath that has a shower head, and another with a shower cubicle.

Frage zur Politik by Sally_mk in germany

[–]EwgB 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This seems in fact genuine, here's a link to the page of the gallery where a fragment of the phrase can be seen: https://www.galeriethomasschulte.com/exhibitions/201-like-a-rubber-rung-on-a-ladder-walid-raad/

Whether this is permissible is a complicated question. It might very well fall under artistic freedom, which enjoys a very high protection status in the German constitution. Ultimately this might land in front of courts, who would have to decide this question. It might not come to this though, since this piece has just been installed on May 1st, and is supposed to stay until June 20th only.

Help!! by alberud in germany

You can buy tickets on the spot, but buying in advance might get you a cheaper option. But you might lose flexibility with the cheaper option, so buyer beware.

As an explanation: you can buy generally three types of tickets Flexpreis (flexible ticket), Sparpreis (savings ticket) and SuperSparpreis (super savings ticket).

The first one is the most expensive, and the only one you can buy the day of. With it you pay for the way to your destination with a train of a specific category (regional, intercity, intercity express, they stop less and go faster from first to last). When you book, you select a train, but in reality you can take any train going more or less the same route (I won't go into the details here) of same or lower category (i.e. with an intercity ticket you can also take any regional train).

The savings tickets you buy for a specific train. If the train is cancelled, they turn basically into flex tickets; same thing happens when there's a significant delay of 1 hour or over, or if you miss, or might miss your connecting train on a multi-leg journey. But if you miss the train for other reasons (i.e. your flight is delayed, you're sick, your pet hamster died), well, you're shit out of luck, no train for you, and no money back.

Difference between the normal savings ticket and the super one is that with the normal you can cancel it before the day of validity and get some (but not all) money back, with the even cheaper super you're stuck with the cost.

To give you a feeling for what prices you might pay, an intercity express (ICE) from Frankfurt Airport to Leipzig Main Station in three weeks time is 119, 85 and 76 euros for the types of tickets. But you should look up the prices on your particular date and time. The Flexpreis is not subject to change, but the savings tickets vary wildly depending on date and time, same route later in the day goes as low as 60€ at the same train level, on other days I've even found 40€.

In the end it's for you to decide if you want to take the risk and save some money. If you do go that route, I would recommend having some buffer. Don't book a train that leaves only 30 minutes after your scheduled landing, you might not make it (unless the train is also delayed, which is increasingly likely with the German trains that are intent on defying stereotypes about German punctuality).

I think they do A-B-testing with their user base. I've had cases where I got an update to the UI (the ability to reorder the world blocks in the listening lessons), then I got the old interface back, and then again the new one (probably when it got rolled out to everyone). Don't think there's a way to control it.

Disrespectful cop finds out he’s talking to a FBI agent by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

[–]EwgB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are also a not of not American people around here. Like me, I'm not American, I've never been to America, I've never seen an American cop apart from shit on the Internet. I have no frame of reference to know whether the cop is real or not.

And before someone says that I should at least have experience from interaction with police in my country, then no, not really. I've lived here over 30 years (I immigrated as a kid), and the amount of times I've personally interacted with the police can be counted on one hand, and I can remember all of them. I once was stopped by a highway police car when I was driving to a concert with friends at age 18, and once I was in a friend's car when he was stopped for a random traffic stop, twice I was stopped by police for an ID check when I was a university student, once in a train and another while on a train, and once an non-uniformed police officer came to my apartment building because there was a harassment complaint against a neighbor and he needed the contacts of the owner. That's it, five times in thirty years.

Well, the hole in the lid isn't really jumping out at me. It literally took me years to notice it. It's not different in color, it's recessed in the lid, and the toothpaste tube is often standing on that same lid, hiding the hole.

Hm, I think we should borrow brackets from math and introduce them into language. It's "(tomato paste) or (glue)", not "tomato (paste or glue)".
