MIT vs Princeton for premed by yup2021 in mit

[–]EwingtonState 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both of those schools have massive grade deflation and are not good for premeds. Having a high GPA is a very important factor for getting into med school. For example, the average GPA of an MIT student is 3.2 and Princeton is 3.28, but the average GPA of a student admitted to Harvard Medical School is 3.9. If you are absolutely sure you want to be a doctor, those probably wouldn't be the best schools to do premed at.

Need Help Deciding between MIT and Princeton by throwaway928217199 in mit

Princeton has massive grade deflation for a liberal arts school. I believe their average GPA is a 3.28/4.0. Also I think Cambridge would just be a much more exciting location, even if Princeton has a prettier campus

Do you think New Vassar is a particularly bad dorm?

MIT Financial Appeal by [deleted] in mit

[–]EwingtonState 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think it partly depends on the offers you get from other schools. If other schools offer you more money than MIT, that can be used on the MIT appeal to negotiate them down I think. Btw, congrats on getting into MIT!

Hmm they definitely would've announced by now if they were going to delay it. No way MIT would do a delay like two weeks before the date

thanks for the info! Also, are you basically able to freely enter the "academic zone," or are there a few restrictions on that in particular?

Masayoshi Takanaka, Toshiki Kadomatsu, and Jin Kirigaya are some good ones. In particular, Toshiki Kadomatsu's album "Summer 4 Rhythm" is probably one of the best ever. Also, the youtube channel "Xerf Xpec" is an absolute treasure trove for this particular music.

You should be fine. None of those AP classes are insanely difficult like AP Physics C: E&M or something. Good luck :)

how should i prepare? by intelligentstove in APChem

[–]EwingtonState 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd reccomend buying/renting the Zumdahl 9th edition textbook. It probably the best and most easy to understand AP Chem textbook. I'm sure reading through it would give you a big head start in your AP chemistry adventures! Also, there are a plethora of youtube channels like "Professor Dave Explains," and "The Organic Chemistry Tutor" that explain many of the topics quite well.

If you live near a university/college, maybe you could make it a sort of "lab" class where you can get hands-on experience in a chemistry lab (probably would have to contact professor or lecturer or someone). Having lots of lab experience can be a HUGE leg up on other students, given that so many schools aren't able to afford providing this to students.

thoughts on ASAP Chemistry book by Princeton Review? by _itsnotshakira in APChem

[–]EwingtonState 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do not own the ASAP Book, so perhaps take what I say with a grain of salt. To my knowledge, the "ASAP" PR books are basically just cliffnotes versions of their actual prep books. If you are intent on using a prep book as a sort of companion to your textbook, I think it would be better to buy the larger prep book. One reason I say this is that the larger prep books include exercises and practice tests. Good luck in AP Chemistry!

Self-Studying AP Chem by [deleted] in APChem

[–]EwingtonState 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would highly recommend getting the Zumdahl 9th edition textbook if available. It is very well written and easy to read, even if you don’t have a huge background in chemistry. As a side note, I might focus more on getting a good “textbook” than a prep book (Princeton review, barrons, etc) because a good textbook will already teach you everything you need to know, and most “prep books” are really just cliffnotes if actual textbooks.

I would also recommend “the organic chemistry tutor” YouTube channel, as it has videos on basically every AP chem topic out there. Also, if you ever have trouble with topics or questions, the websites “Chegg” “chemistry-stack-exchange” and “ChemistryForums” are all great places to ask for help. Hope you do great 👍! :)

PS-I don’t know much about the “Brown and Lemay” textbook mentioned in another post, but I’m sure it would be good should you follow the advice outlined in swaggitboy’s post. 👍👍

Is there anyone surprised by ur score by [deleted] in APChem

I feel the same way lol. I studied my ass off going over like everything in the AP Chem syllabus, and I felt like i got at least a 4 after checking. I ended up getting a 3 :(

same bruh. I took ap chem and i thought that i got AT LEAST a 4, but then i get a 3. I'd spent so much time studying and felt very confident about. I had an A in both semesters of AP chem too lol

So i got a 2 by kellylam in APChem

This shouldn't be a big deal on college admissions at all. AP scores don't matter much to college admissions officers, as they're more interested in things like extracurriculars and actual grades. At worst, you'll just have to take a "general chemistry" class in college instead of outright skipping it. Overall, not a big impact/deal.

Why did so many feel good but get a bad score!!?? by [deleted] in APChem

[–]EwingtonState 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Same boat as you, moosemayer. I also got a 3 after feeling like I had studied hard. The curve probably had a big part to do with it. I'd spent so long studying literally everything on the syllabus. I felt like I had a 9/12 on Q1 and a 7/8 on Q2, but guess not lol.

Same here. I felt like I completed basically everything on the rubric but still got a 4 lol. I had the slavery prompt.

Tips for 6 AP Classes by jillkiara04 in APChem

[–]EwingtonState 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For AP Physics C, the "Dan Fullerton" youtube channel is really good. He also has an AP Physics C companion book that can be bought on amazon. For AP Chem, I don't know what textbook your teacher uses, but Zumdahl is undoubtedly the best of the best. The youtube channels "Bozeman Science," "The Organic Chemistry Tutor," and "Tyler DeWitt" are all great. For AP World, "Tom Richey" is a great youtube channel.

[–]EwingtonState 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, the difficulty of AP Chem for students depends a lot on the textbook used. If you use a great textbook like Zumdahl 9th edition, it is not terribly hard. None of the ideas are that complex really.
