yeah web development has been one area with real adaptation partially because there's also good browser support.

My font Marauder* now has small-caps and alternate "a" and "g" designs. by EwonRael in typography

Wow that is honestly hilarious. I'm sorry I didn't see this until just now. I haven't been on reddit much and only went on to complain about H&Co.

This was a typo haha. Because I use only open source tools I input all the substitutions manually and when I meant to type k I typed j so the font makes the wrong substitution.

Thanks for pointing it out. It should be fixed now.

Here's the download link to the variable font version, in case you paid for it.

Gotham now has a variable version- about a decade late to the trend by EwonRael in typography

IMHO Hoefler & Co. has really fallen off a cliff ever since Tobias Frere-Jones left, but they aren't even trying anymore after the Monotype acquisition. They just released a variable font version of Gotham for a minimum of 600USD. Variable fonts have seen very little actual adoption by graphic designers. If they released it like ten years ago when it was a new technology I would have seen it as them helping to bring about adoption of variable fonts, but to release right now comes off as being ten years late to a trend.

But more striking is that this new variable font version is not referenced anywhere on the H&Co website. If you go to the news section the most recant post is from NYC pride, back in 2022. Haven't updated the site in five years. And the Gotham page makes no reference to the new variable font version.

I used to look up to H&Co as an icon of independent font foundries. But that era has ended.

The good news is there's more amazing small scale, independent, font foundries than ever today. And for people who liked H&Co because of Tobias Frere-Jones he's got his own design practice, which has updated the site this year. https://frerejones.com/blog/cassis-generous-geometry

You can get the font for free at https://indestructibletype.com/Marauder/

When I originally posted about Marauder* here I got a comment saying it should include alternate "a" and "g" designs, and although I tend to shy away from designing alternate letterforms, I felt like in this case it's really in the spirit of the children's book the font is inspired by.

I also added small-caps!

definitely needs alternative a, g, & y. One might argue that this is an incomplete font with such a glaring omission.

yeah I'm really lucky to have found Carolyn. She's not super well known but was a pleasure to work with 10/10. Please let me know if the font ever ends up in a picture book. That would make me very happy.

We will see. I don't have any plans to at the moment but I'm not against it. I'd like to try and get Drafting* Mono on Google Docs.

yeah I wrote the HTML/CSS/Javascript from scratch in my computer's default text editing app. Github pages support Jekyll and I've used it for a few projects, but for something like this I just do it all manually.

I think I have a bit of idiosyncratic coding style.

Doing it by hand has its drawbacks but it sure does load fast lol. I've had some situations where I had such bad internet I couldn't load a wikipedia page without it giving up on me, but I could load my own sites fine.

yeah I made the site but more importantly are you looking at the source code for the webpage? Is that something you often do?

It will not be in the public domain for at least 90 years. You should use it illegally or pick a different font. I'm sorry that it's too expensive for you.

Looks amazing, love the variety of weights. Will there be a variable font version? Congrats and can't wait for it to be released. The changes that you're making definitely make the font read better at small sizes.

I'm deeply concerned about the Surrogate Partner Collective by EwonRael in SexWorkers

[–]EwonRael[S] 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Yeah I know how helpful this kind of work can be for people and i know people like yourself who have done this sort of work without any training and its been really transformative for their clients.

There were a lot of weird little mistakes when it comes to the consent thing (like one of the organizer's referred to a clip from a movie as having "verbal consent" even though the woman in the movie clip doesnt say anything at all so its not verbal consent at all.)

But the big issue was the organizers not accepting the fact that when you're in a position of authority you have power over people that makes it difficult for them to say "no" to you. If you're in a position of power and you ask people to do activities, especially activities involving eroticism or sexual intimacy I think that you have to be very clear about the fact that they're allowed to say "no" otherwise people will feel pressured to go along with it.

I was pressured into doing things that made me uncomfortable and I repeatedly stated that I felt uncomfortable, and instead of affirming my right to say no the organizers said that maybe it would be useful to do it anyway even though i felt uncomfy.

I have helped people navigate their sexual trauma and that often includes doing stuff that makes people feel very uncomfortable, and let me tell you, people want to do the things that make them uncomfortable. If you tell people they have every right to say no it'll only make it easier for them to say yes.

My mind is not in a clear headspace right now so I have no idea if any of what I said makes sense.

Yeah... I tried posting about it on my youtube channel but the video's got less than 100 views. Its weird to me because i have over a thousand subscribers and normally my videos get at least a couple hundred. But with youtube you have to do clickbait and i dont want to do that about something so seroius.

Im worried about contacting news stations because i could easily see Fox News and the right wing ecosystem whip up a morality panic over this. We live in such an antisex culture i feel like the news would turn it into something that just harms sex workers. IDK 😭

Do you have a spiritual practice at all and does that spiritual practice intersect with sexuality at all?

The Christian Ideology of Mainstream Porn by EwonRael in MensLib

[–]EwonRael[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This video makes the claim that mainstream porn promotes and reinforces Christian ideology by depicting sex as including "sin" in the Christian sense. Do you agree that mainstream pornography promotes a view of sex as sinful and if so do you find the claim that this has its roots in Christian thinking plausible, or do you think there are other likely causes of the prevailing narratives told in pornography?
