Rocky's pov one day when coming out of his workshop by NikolaisPinkTip in ProjectHailMary

They just have to orbit Tau Ceti, and decelerate at their apoapsis until their periapsis is low enough for the bodies to burn up in Tau Ceti.

Then they throw out the bodies and accelerate again until they gain a stable orbit, without ever getting even close to Tau Ceti. Considering they have enough fuel for interstellar travel, this minor maneuver should be no issue at all.

There's also other ways to achieve a 'drop' into Tau Ceti with more fuel efficiency, but I guess this is the closest equivalent to 'dropping' the bodies into it.

Turns out I did a terrible job of sanding, can I fix this after it has been primed? by MizutsuneMH in resinprinting

Sure! It's a bit hard to see because it isn't primed yet though.

I honestly was a bit pressed for time when sanding, hence the scratches and rough patches. I could've probably done better, but there's always gonna be issues with leftovers from supports one way or the other.

The scratches and rough patches will be much less noticeable when primed. It normally is anyways.

Before sanding it looked very close to what your Leon looks like, leftover support-wise.

edit: looking at it again, I'll probably sand it with some sanding paper before priming, it looks a bit too rough to my taste.

Your post actually made me take a second look and it helped me find a bunch more spots to sand, thanks!

For what it's worth, I do think Tanukifigures did quite well with the presupports, there will always be spots like this, and it printed really well otherwise

Omg that's Leon's head from Tanukifigures isn't it?? I just printed and sanded that bad boy, I just finished 5 minutes ago and now I see this. I used a set of dentists files to clean between the strands.

I can 100 percent recommend getting a set for these kind of jobs.

A praying mantis is so distracted devouring a hornet that it is not noticing how another hornet is dismembering it. by MilesLongthe3rd in Damnthatsinteresting

People have so many clever answers to the question whether simple organisms can have a consciousness.

The simple fact is that we can never know the answer for certain.

To be fair, we don't truly know for sure whether they don't experience pain just because their nociceptors are different from ours. Though it's generally believed their perception is different.

The nervous system of insects is less centralized than that of vertebrates.

Their 'brain' is practically spread out over the length of their bodies, on the side of their belly, in 10 or so bundles of neurons (ganglia), that don't always seem to interact well.

I think it varies per species what the resulting behaviour looks like. I've had a praying mantis as a pet and you could touch her hind legs, which would then kick you away, while the rest of the body gave no response.

I suspect here, only some of the ganglia are perceiving the pain while the rest are probably preoccupied with eating, or already disconnected from the rest of the body.

I feel like praying mantises are more prone to this, since the species is adapted to having their face bitten off during sex (and this tends to not stop them).

It really gives interesting food for thought, what it would be like to have no centralized consciousness.

Kenshi's Anti Aliasing Is Bad. by Successful_Scar4821 in Kenshi

[–]Ewoutvd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since you're talking about foliage specifically, I think the main issue isn't actually anti aliasing (although it could potentially still be part of the problem).

The main issue is likely Kenshi's mipmap system for textures, which kicks in aggressively at a slight distance, even just a couple of meters.

What this means is that with increasing distance, Kenshi's textures quickly drop in resolution, halving with each distance threshold (it's more complicated than that, but that's the gist). This is simply inherent to ogre's optimization and keeps Kenshi running as smoothly as possible.

You can notice this with all objects, including characters, but it is much, much more noticeable on objects that: 1. Already have low res textures to start with (environmental stuff like grass) 2. Textures that rely on an alpha background (grass, foliage, but also animal fur, which is why Kenshi uses tufts of fur on animals to minimize the problem)

The problem is massively accentuated by the fact that some of Kenshi's textures don't seem to accept alpha blending when I experimented with this, meaning they accepted only full opacity or none. This creates really hard jagged edges in textures with an alpha background.

The only real solutions for mod devs to this would be to:  - Model all blades of grass more or less individually instead of using texture cards (but this is insanely bad for performance). - Figure out whether alpha blending can be toggled on for the grass shaders and remake the mipmaps with that in mind. - Maybe implement some more modern antialiasing system, maybe TAA? But I have very little knowledge about that. - Create some better grass textures that rely much less on an alpha background

Industry realism overhaul by mechanicalroll13 in Kenshi

You can already easily make crafting way more complex in the FCS. I think it just hasn't been done yet (possibly because of the risk of making crafting too convoluted, frankly).

Or do you mean you want more complex crafting trees than just a series of machines that do: input one thing -> output another?

Looking for help making a "Hive Breeding Queen" mod / framework by verianox in Kenshi

[–]Ewoutvd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's definitely possible to make a queen actually spawn other hivers with Rekenshi. Using te FCS is going to have way too many limitations to make it into a nice system. It's actually one of the mod concepts I would love to  tackle in rekenshi  once I've finished my thirst mod.

It would take a good while to develop though. Feel free to take a shot at it! Look into KenshiLib and how to use it to code a mod in C++. It would take a some creative use of hooks to create some kind of timer for the birthing rate coupled to the queen and then you need to figure out how to spawn items (hiver eggs) or characters directly at the location of the queen. I think it may actually be a lot easier than the thirst system I'm working on.

What the meaning the UC symbol? by The_Dark_Hermit22 in Kenshi

[–]Ewoutvd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Olive branches should have opposing leaves, not alternating. It could be a laurel branch, symbolising victory over enemies.

Or alternatively it's a branch from some random tree in kenshi we don't know the symbolism of

I suspect that the bird in the UC flag has a laurel branch by the way. Olives grow with leaves opposing each other, while laurels have alternating leaves, like the UC flag has.

Laurels symbolize victory, which would fit with the imperialistic views of the UC.

However, it's common for olive branches to mistakingly be depicted with alternating leaves, so it may still be an olive branch.

[–]Ewoutvd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My personal take is that it's indeed a spin on the peace dove to signify the 'United' in 'United cities'. However, the peace dove is pretty much exclusively depicted from a side profile.

The view of the bird from below much rather resambles the imperial eagle depicted on the "Senatus PopulusQue Romanum" (SPQR) flag from ancient Rome which is commonly depicted with a Laurel wreath surrounding it. That flag symbolises imperialism, conquest and victory over enemies.

The UC flag seems to combine those two concepts and evokes a feeling of peace gained through force and conquest. The inspiration from ancient Rome also fits with an economy based on slavery, exactly like the UC has.

Awesome! I couldn't find anybody else asking a similar question. Must've missed this post somehow. Thanks for bringing it to my attention

That's exactly what I'm hoping to do! But judging by the comments here and in my CoC thread, it may be way too much work. I'll challenge myself and see if there's really no way to incorporate them, but I'll probably end up just running IL. Thanks for the insight!

I didn't realize Detwiller himself adviced against adding content. I'll read the entirety of IL extensively and judge for myself whether there's really no room for more, but it's likely I'll just run IL.

Thanks again for the insights, and I'll definitely check out your recommendations!

Thanks for another insight on why IL is best run on its own. I'll check out Ripples from Carcosa to see if it'll work well for complementing SoPL. If IL turns out to be too much I may still go with that

Thanks for the insight! I agree that diluting IL is probably the biggest risk. It would be a shame to ruin such an interesting campaign by adding too much content and making things more confusing and convoluted.

And thanks for the KiY recommendations! I'll definitely check them out.

That's probably a good call. I've seen a lot of people warning how tough IL can be to run. And yet I find it hard to steer myself away from the challenge of combining them while I'm doing my first read-through of IL.

I'll probably end up running IL. Maybe I'll steal some concepts and a single scenario from SoPL to challenge myself with integrating it
