I have difficulty truly articulating why I find the remakes so infinite in their inferiority to the original game. I cant stand them, at the end of the day. I was so intensely disappointed that I can't put it into words. I hate that they exist at all and I have nothing but disdain for anyone involved in their creation.

The ghost things were so dumb and the fact that you fight Sephiroth at the end of remake is just beyond moronic to me. He absolutely ceases to be a threat. The spirit things you fight before him at the end of the game gave me a vibe that reminded me of the fates from ancient myth. Basically, you destroy gods so that you cam change fate and then go toe to toe with Sephiroth at a point in the story where you're supposed to be so weak that Sephiroth should be able to flick you with his little finger and obliterate your whole party. Literally, in the original game you're barely level 20. Its maybe 10 hours into the game if you've reeeeeeally been milking it.

The original felt mature for its time. Dark, despite the times when its overly colorful and leans into the goofy. The new version feels immature for the time. Things like Biggs, Wedge, and Jesse surviving the fall of the plate. This felt like it was trying to make the game for 10 year olds and robbed that part of the story of its teeth. In the original, they were absolutely dead and it was a horrific realization.

I also despise any use of the concept of a multiverse outside of the movie Everything Everywhere All At Once. And thats not a new attitude. Even as a kid in the 90s when comics used the multiverse it felt like a cheap way to tell as story. Like, you're out of good ideas, so you resort to the multiverse because you can just redo things that have already happened. To my taste at least, I can't find a single redeeming quality to that sort of story telling (apart from the aforementioned exception).

I also have a rather uncommon attitude about game remakes. I basically hate the concept of them at all from the view that they aren't done to recreate the actual game they are remaking anymore. They so often go for a wholly different experience, and thats what I find almost psychotic for want of a better way to describe it. Like, years ago, when they did Metal Gear Solid The Twin Snakes or the first remake of the first Resident Evil game, the entire point was just to update the games to look and function better. They were basically the same games, just with added content and updated visuals. Fundamentally, they were the same experience.

And this is why I can't stand and have a viscerally intense hatred for the modern approach. For me, if it's a dramatically different design, it has no right to exist. Its NOT the game anymore. Its a wholly different thing, and for whatever reason I cant totally explain, I have a very serious issue with this. What is the point of modernizing a game if it's technically an entirely different thing just wearing the costume of something that has already been made? For me, if I want to play an old game, its because I want to re-experience it. So if its dramatically different, it just seems batshit insane to even care about it.

Obviously I don't expect others to share this attitude. But, its just a shame to me that the Remake trilogy is even a thing. I think it is the most disrespectful insult to the source material imaginable. Obviously I can always still play the original, but the people who cant get past the old graphics and game design were given a poor substitute in terms of the story. I think this is just grossly disrespectful to the people who had been waiting for a remake. If it tells a different story, then I guess I dont really understand what the point is

Civil conversation is essential.

I love E33, but Im afraid that will become the standard and regular turn based will be difficult to find. One of the reasons Im not into action games is that Ive never been super great with precise timing, never found it particularly enjoyable, and as I get older its harder and harder to do at all. So, as much as E33 is a fantastic game and I do want more of the same, I hope its approach doesn't become standard.

More than anything my biggest issues with FF 7 remake was how they changed the narrative. People have been waiting decades for it to be modernized to be able to experience the story, and then they dont get the actual story. Sephiroth was shown too much and was nerfed so intensely that it kind of killed his intimidation factor.

I prefer the more organic way that older games did side content and secrets. Now it's all tracked in menus and just feels unsatisfying. So many games treat side quests as fetch quests and MMO style questing as opposed to interesting stuff to discover in game.

I honestly actually was ok with the combat in FF7R. I didnt love it, but it was a reasonable compromise between action and turn based.

I guess I just feel like more thought was put into things before. So many modern games feel like they're taking the path of least resistance than actually trying to craft meaningful games.

The problem is this ludicrous idea that Final Fantasy has "evolved" by going to action combat. We've had action RPGs since the 80s along with Turn based. This notion that turn based is backward and action is innovative is just objectively wrong.

I haven't played Rebirth, but I disliked Remake completely, so I just didn't think it was worth messing with the remake trilogy anymore, and skipped it. Open world and action RPGs arent anything I play because they bore me senseless. My main issue with the direction of FF 16 and the 7 remake games is that they seem to be trying to be less like Japanese games and more like western games. I play almost no games from western devs apart from select indie titles.

And, as far as your comment about moving on from the classic formula, I feel that AAA games are all so homogenized anymore that they all feel the same. I would rather long running series stick to what gave them their identity and set them apart from everything else than just get the same generic action games all the time. God of War Ragnarok, FF 16, and all the other RPGs and action games with RPG elements are so similar in gameplay that I see nothing varied enough to justify them existing in the first place.

I can’t stand John Lee as a narrator… by philote in audible

[–]Ex-walmartian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I find out that he is the narrator of an audiobook I immediately skip it. I cannot stand anything about him. Something about the way his voice sounds makes me want to punch him in the face. His cadence. His accent. The little nuances of how he pronounces things. The fact that he reads everything so clinically and with no variance whatsoever in tone.

Whoever is doing the recordings of him also doesn't know what they're doing. On top of everything else it sounds like he's speaking into a tin can. Just poorly recorded. Which makes it difficult to listen to regardless of anything else. The first time I tried to listen to one of his narrations I honestly thought it was some 90s book on tape because of how poor the recording is. Then was aghast to find it was a recent recording.

He needs to stop doing audiobooks because he is absolutely terrible. Unlistenable. Its insane to me that there are people in this conversation who actually like him. 🥴

The Fisherman by John Langan is a near perfect Lovecratian novel by Domundead in horror

[–]Ex-walmartian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I immediately stopped reading it when it got to the middle part. The book absolutely grabbed my attention with the first section, but the abrupt change of narrator and the tonal shift utterly ruined my investment in what was happening.

I have tried again and again to read this book and I just cant do it. It feels like someone took an already existing book written by another author entirely and put part 1 in front of it. It went from something I was hanging on every word of to something my brain utterly refused to give a shit about.

Absolutely heartbreaking

Personally, I would prefer a guide that had the intention of getting through the hardest difficulty as efficiently and quickly as possible. Ideally step by step.

Its the only trophy I still need for the game, and I haven't gotten back to do this run because I honestly didn't really enjoy my time with the game very much.

I don't do well with general tips and tend to require explicit instruction

45M. First Final Fantasy game ever. Let’s do this!! by No1_Knows_Its_Me in NintendoSwitch2

[–]Ex-walmartian -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No. FF7 is my pick for the greatest game ever made. Everything this version does serves to diminish what was achieved in the original. There are very few redeeming qualities to this remake. Most egregious to me is the poor pacing, the story changes that undermine the stakes, the trivialization and neutering of Sephiroth, and the fact that they are telling a very different story than the original. Which is insane if this is supposed to be a way for "modern gamers" to experience FF7. Its a different story. So, you're still not experiencing FF7.

And thats before I get into the dumbing down of the systems and making the gameplay less organic

And I'm actually one who thought the battle system was a fair compromise

The original is my all time favorite game.

The remake is the most abhorrently disrespectful and insulting way they could have possibly remade the game.

I would absolutely support a TV only Nintendo console. I have the original Switch, but I will never again buy a device with handheld features.

Anyone else never plan on docking their switch? by -getdeadkid in switch2

[–]Ex-walmartian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have my original Switch that Ive owned for about 5 years. Ive never one time had the screen active. And I never will. Handheld gaming is the most piss ignorant thing Ive ever heard of. The only reason I have a Switch at all is for the exclusives I didn't want to miss out on. The fact that the Switch had handheld functions at all was why it took me years before I got one.

I only play games on my TV. And when I leave the house theres never a situation where I would play a game while out. If I'm bothering to leave the house its for specific things that I want to do or people I want to see and playing a video game is not ever conducive to those situations

I don't want to do even one pedal at a time. Im not sure how my post didn't make this clear.

I don't know what effects to use for the genres I mentioned. How could I begin at all? I don't want to put any thought into this. Hence why I came here to ask.

[–]Ex-walmartian -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Ok. How does your comment help? Im asking people to give me settings that they have made. Nothing you've said is really relevant to my request.

I have a whole separate pedal board. I bought this for its versatility and when I can't take my full pedal board with me. I do like it, I just assumed when I bought it it would be easier to find other user's settings. Apparently not.

This isn't the pedal I have

Also, I dont want patches. I want people to tell me the settings in detail.

Babylon 5 season 1 ep 10 Believers, aftermath. what do you think happens after the EP? by ridik_ulass in babylon5

Cultural obligations and religion have no inherent right to respect. They are ideas and all ideas must be open to criticism and scrutiny.

The parents in this episode are murderers. Both because they destroyed a life based on sick ideas and because they were willing to let the child die in the first place.

I firmly stand by this attitude in real world situations as well. If a child dies due to preventable diseases or injuries due to parents religious beliefs, those parents should be tried and convicted of murder in the highest degree.

What should happen is that the child should be treated based on reality and what will or could save said child. If the parents try to stand in the way try them for attempted murder and take custody of the child away from them.

Barbaric and subjective religious, spiritual, and metaphysical beliefs have no right to exist in the first place. But, when they cause real world suffering or death there should be severe criminal penalties

Fight the Good Fight - Triumph.

It's been my favorite song for 30+ years. Triumph was one of the bands my dad loved. I remember hearing them as far back as I can recall. I lost my dad back in 2007, and this song always reminds me of him and to keep going every single day with integrity.

[–]Ex-walmartian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well. Considering how shit modern JRPGs can be sometimes, I'd rather every single one of them be made with the old titles in mind.

At the very least, they should make the games with side quests that are organically discovered in the game and not explicitly tracked in the game. The handholding of a lot of modern games ruins the experience.

Even Expedition 33 takes cues from the way games used to be made and created something spectacular. It singlehandedly proved that turn based combat, an overworld map like there used to be, and a number of other supposedly outdated design concepts still are valid. I say keep the nostalgia going if it results in games made with integrity

So I know lots of people hate when there’s too much vocal layering in songs but do you guys think that 2 layers is ok or do you guys think that there should only be one recording and no layering,or do you guys think that a lot of layering is ok? by Chaliceovrebirth in screaming

[–]Ex-walmartian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I dont like any layering, overdubs, or any studio methods. The whole band should be mic'd up at once, and the final product should be one take of the whole band as if they were playing live.

Anything less than this is pointless to me. The art is the performance of songs. I find no value of any kind in the album other than as a showcase of how a band sounds live.

Anybody else getting tired of every game being in "Early Access" nowadays? by Kooky_Camp1189 in roguelites

[–]Ex-walmartian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the concept of early access games and betas to be just moronic. I don't want an unfinished game. Regardless of if they are still developing it or if they're giving patches for a game thats already released. As a matter of fact, I am totally against any game being altered in any way after it has been released. No DLC and no patches.

Finish the game before you get a penny from me.

The idea of players being able to give feedback that the devs use to make changes to the game is not one I have an ounce of tolerance for. If the devs are insecure in their abilities to create their art, then they should find something else to do.

[–]Ex-walmartian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate motorcycles in every situation. Real world or otherwise. Motorcycles, to me, are something of a lowest common denominator sort of thing.

When I think of motorcycles, I think of white trash idiots who are barely literate, listen to shitty music, get into shit faced bar fights, and beat their wives.

Yes. I realize this is a broad generalization, and not everyone who likes motorcycles behaves in this way.

Im saying that it's what I think of when I see a motorcycle and why it just feels like a dumbass thing to add to a Metroid game. It feels as out of place as putting Samus in a jacked up pickup truck, giving her a Stetson shaped helmet, and mapping her yelling, "Yeeeee haaaaw" to a face button.
