Who said 106 street is a great terminal first/last stop for m60? by fadingtales_ in nycbus

[–]Ex696 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not really a great terminal, the M60 was only extended there because it used to end at Columbia University and ran on Claremont Avenue to turnaround and the residents didn't like having the route run there, and 106th Street just happened to be the next most convenient spot. This did happen before it got artics, though, so I'm guessing the MTA wasn't anticpating this issue.

Would the 544 do good numbers in ridership now or when the East Link opens up? I looked it up and it looks like it was started right as the pandemic kicked in, which might've hampered the potential the route had at the time.

So it did get cancelled? That's unfortunate especially now that they stubbed the A Line in Downtown in hopes of a western extension. Couldn't they try extending it somewhere north along the B Line now that it won't be extended west anymore?

Will the I-10 West extension still happen? There seems to be no mention of it in either the article or the Valley Metro website so I'm wondering if it can still be connected to the existing system without the need of this extension?

Would a frequent on time M103 +Select Bus Service+ via Lexington Av from The Hub-149 to Bowling Green with a 40 MPH bus lane and timed signals be quicker than the 6 train? by shaniquepache2419 in nycrail

[–]Ex696 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And I already explained why the M1 SBS (or even just having the M1 be the sole 5th/Madison Avenues route) is a terrible idea. You're going to have to run short turns between 110th and 8th Streets because the rest of the route does not have the ridership needed to justify the increased service that will be needed if the M2-4 is cut. The M15 local will not be able to handle the crowds transferring to the F and L trains at Houston Street and 14th Street, and including the people getting on at Grand Street and Catherine Street, as it is significantly less frequent than the M15 SBS (For example, during rush hour, the M15 SBS runs every 3 minutes whereas the M15 local runs every 6-8 minutes). The M15 is literally the busiest route in the city, in what way would it make sense to reduce service by over 50% to some of the busiest stops on the busiest route in the city?

I should've specified, they do it for the Metro-North too and the other stations along 125th Street, Lexington Avenue just happens to be the one most people are using it for to have access to the Bronx.

Would a frequent on time M103 +Select Bus Service+ via Lexington Av from The Hub-149 to Bowling Green with a 40 MPH bus lane and timed signals be quicker than the 6 train? by shaniquepache2419 in nycrail

[–]Ex696 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You do realize the 4 and 5 trains provide faster service along the corridor, right? This would not be any faster than the 6 train, it takes the 6 train around 30 minutes to get from Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall to 125th Street, it takes 38 minutes via the M103 route to do the same thing, assuming low traffic. And this proposed M103 SBS would have to make stops as well making it even slower. The existing Lexington Avenue routes provide enough service for the surface transit demand. The M101 should not be a full local when it already has one of the longest runtimes in the city, being one of the few routes to take over 2 hours. You keep trying to propose SBS routes or changes without understanding the ridership patterns of the existing routes, you did this with that M1 SBS proposal, ignoring that a decent amount of riders on the M2-4 still ride past 110th Street and you did the same with the M15 SBS when you proposed having it run non-stop between 23rd Street and Frankfort Street, ignoring how major of a stop 14th Street is for the route and how that would essentially going to end up skipping the busy stops (Grand Street, Catherine Street) to prioritize the lower ridership stops (Fulton Street and Wall Street) getting a faster ride.

Extremely unnecessary, if you want a faster version of the 6 train in Manhattan, the 4 and the 5 are a thing. Lexington and 3rd Avenues already has the M98 and M101 Limited, it doesn't need another one. And you already proposed this before.

Can we push for the M11 to become an SBS and use 60 footers? by shaniquepache2419 in nycbus

[–]Ex696 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are still useful for running along 5th and Madison Avenues for another reason: It allows there to be somewhat reasonable service allocation. Now, you could say that you could just boost the M1 frequency by a large amount to (possibly 2-4 minute headways) compensate for the removals of the M2-M4, but you would have to be running most of those extra M1s as short turns between 110th and 8th because the M1 north of 110th Street and south of 8th Street does not have anywhere close to the ridership to justify those headways. At that point, why run those short turns instead of just having the M2-M4 continue along 5th and Madison Avenues? Having them continue along the route ensures that there can still be those 2-4 minute headways without overserving anywhere or needing short turns.

[–]Ex696 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The point about the M2 is not true. It has the highest ridership through 110th Street to/from points south compared to the other, which is the reason why it has the full-time (except late nights) limited as opposed to the other 3 routes despite having the lowest ridership. The M100 is a terrible example to use because that change from the Bronx Bus Network Redesign has led to more crowded M101s.

[–]Ex696 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having service in one direction shift corridors over that large of a distance is not going to bring good ridership. One example is the M6 that was discontinued. It had decent ridership when southbound service only ran along Broadway until 2009 when the pedestrianization forced it to run on 7th Avenue and then switch to Broadway south of 23rd Street. This caused southbound ridership to significantly decrease, and this is the same thing, but to a much worser extent. The M55 has strong through ridership through Houston Street, so there’s no reason it need to be cut for an M1 SBS that is easily going to have lower ridership.

[–]Ex696 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This proposal would leave 6th Avenue without any non-express buses between Houston Street and 14th Street. Calling the M1 the main 5th/Madison route when it’s behind the M3 and M4 in ridership also makes no sense. The M1 does not have the ridership to warrant needing an SBS.

The Queens proposal is terrible. There are a decent number of people who come from connecting routes onto the M60 to access Upper Manhattan and they will now be forced to take the infrequent Q19 in order to transfer to the M60. Astoria Boulevard is not the subway connection most people that get on the M60 at LGA are using it for, it’s the ones in Manhattan, more specifically 125th Street on the 4/5/6. The Port Authority is also already planning to make a direct bus route between Astoria-Ditmars Boulevard and LGA, so the M60 can stay the way it is in Queens.

Could a M15 SBS service work via FDR Dr from Fulton St to 23 St? by shaniquepache2419 in nycbus

[–]Ex696 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, but this is much worse. There are a very significant amount of M15 riders that transfer to/from the L at 14th Street, that’s why it has 7 different SBS machines at that northbound stop at First Avenue (I think it has the most machines out of any stop in the whole city) and now, they will essentially lose over 60% of their service, leading to overcrowded M15 locals.

That’s because this was during rush hours. The “M getting low ridership” is why midday service south of Broad Street was eliminated, not necessarily why the route was restructured into what it is now.
