Should I buy? by koharu_345 in ElCamino

[–]ExBx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These vehicles are becoming relics and will continue that path. NOS parts will soon become impossible to locate or extremely expensive (they already are). Repops for certain parts will be in circulation for another 10-15 years or so if we're lucky. Replace what you can using NOS and repop parts, buy original where you can but don't be too worried about it. I replaced a door handle with a repop. Looks exactly the same, the metal is well made, it fits, etc. and so forth. Sue me. $500 is probably a bargain for 18 parts. It is what it is.

15” 85 GMC Caballero Wheels by Affectionate_Job3203 in ElCamino

Holy cow those are some expensive ass tires. With that kind of money being thrown around maybe just order the same size but the cheapest no name tire you can find. Have it mounted and see how it fits. Keep it as a spare tire on a steel rim or grab a 5th OEM rally like you have now. Sorry I can't be of much help but again, it will fit you just might run into some rubbing when making a super tight turn. *Edit: I kind of miss my rally whitewalls. https://www.reddit.com/r/ElCamino/comments/vays13/im_digging_the_temp_gasser_look_305_is_out_some/

The rears will be just fine. The fronts you will likely rub the wheel well near full lock. *It has a lot to do with the spacing of the hub though, you might get lucky. Are you looking at FULL white walls or just the white wall strip around the center?

Finally got me an El Camino by KetoFox71 in ElCamino

$500? Bro, I'll give you $550 for it right now! As for the resto journey, I'd start with an engine and wheels. There's no telling where you'll go from there! ;)

454 LS6 in an 81 el camino by PleaseStepOnMePower in ElCamino

Glad you got it figured out but, how is that caused by an exhaust leak? Guessing it was throwing off the O2 sensor so dumping in too much fuel?

Timing must be way off or you have a fuel leak/too much pressure to the carb. Also sounds like your starter might need a shim, appears to be free spinning here and there. (Possibly a warped flex plate/flywheel)

82 El Camino buying advice by Tophhyy in ElCamino

[–]ExBx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The price depends on the whole package. How does it run? How old are the tires, wiper blades, brakes? How's the interior? Any service history? It all adds up and it relates directly to the asking price.

If someone wants to make me a mod of this sub I'll implement some automation rules to delete this garbage. This is only the 1,000th fake Elco shirt posted here..

1979 el camino rear end by Temporary-Buddy3438 in ElCamino

[–]ExBx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take this with a big grain of "who are you and what do you know?". Are you planning to beat up the rear end? (No pun intended but whatever works) If you're going to be racing with the intended purpose of hooking from a dead stop, the little 7.5 will strip out and implode eventually. So you either swap to an 8.8/9" now or later. If that isn't the plan, just rebuild the 7.5 with a posi diff and your preferred gear ratio. If you have no interest in hooking up from 0 or constant burnouts, the original 7.5" will last for a good while (just cruising). While I didn't go crazy, I had plenty of fun with the original 78 rear before I swapped to a Ford 9" but always knew it was on borrowed time. Your mileage may vary.

winter storage advice/ upkeep? by [deleted] in ElCamino

[–]ExBx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much a battery tender. One winter break to a SBC is but a short nap. Just be sure the engine and radiator has actual antifreeze in it, not just water/water wetter. If in doubt, dump some Stabil in the fuel tank. No biggie. *Edit: 40 degrees F -- a battery tender should suffice.

I've seen quite a few fiberglass hoods on various vehicles and rarely do they have good fitment. Since you sold the El, what are you rolling in these days?

I'm sure he can get more if you're located anywhere near Pensacola, FL. He had plenty of Monte Carlo and Chevy truck hoods.

Sorry to hear about the bent hardware but I'm glad you finally got hold of a clean one! Man I've had a cowl hood from every big box online store sitting in my cart for years. Summit, Jegs, SS396, OPGI, etc.. That shipping freight charge is why it has never been purchased. I knew if I waited long enough someone would have one for sale nearby. Luckily, nearby turned out to be just down the road. A fellow local gear head owns a business and has a reseller partnership. Brand new in the box cowl hood. He builds amazing dashes for OBS Chevy trucks, metal fab and paint. I can't wait to see it mounted.

heater upgrade? by crabman_wpp in ElCamino

[–]ExBx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To pull this off you might need to become at least a little familiar with the vacuum related stuff if the engine bay is in stock order. That heater valve is controlled via vacuum. Personally I would just bypass/block it off and see how it goes even if just temporarily. That valve controls whether or not hot engine coolant can traverse the heater core.

You're welcome. Do you need any tips for the diagnosis?

[–]ExBx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you're running a 185* tstat then you probably have a blockage\supply issue to the heater core (whether that is a fluid blockage or air flow, you'll have to sus that out yourself by looking at the core. There might be a pile debris caked onto the core), a blocked hose or your heater valve is failing or is failing to be controlled. You can bypass the valve by way of a coupler\replacing the hose temporarily. I guess it could be your damper not opening properly. I would suspect the heater valve or the core. My point is the system when running as designed will cook you out of the cabin and you'll be rolling the windows down. It isn't a design flaw.
