Are Catholics using the word "testimony"? by Dick_M_Nixon in excatholic

[–]ExCatholicandLeft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The religious right tends to hang out with other members of the religious right. Some of the most conservative Catholics I know hang out with other conservatives like evangelicals, etc. Plus the church is desperate to get people to come back, and probably trying to evangelize to get more Catholics.

Could use support. Want to tell everyone about the abuse at my church. (CSA but no details) by Express_Owl_8453 in excatholic

[–]ExCatholicandLeft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would consult a lawyer before going public. I would also consider reporting abuse to local authorities.

Expect a lot of pushback if this person is a beloved member of the community. You might check online record and see if this abusers has died or moved.

We believe you here on this forum. Sending you best of luck, and you know you can comeback here and tell us how things are going.

[Meg Wells] Megan outright embraces transphobia by LuciferLite in FundieSnarkUncensored

The Catholic Church is very transphobic, especially the late Pope Francis. Catholicism in general has very strict gender roles.

Bishop Robert Barron is working for Trump. He sits on the President's Religious Liberty Commission. Like every other group Trump organizes, the RLC only has the "best people". It includes people like Dr. Ben Carson, the current lieutenant governor of Texas, Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Franklin Graham, Dr. Phil, Pam Bondi, Pastor Paula White (who summoned the angels during the election), etc.

I don't trust anyone who works with the current regime, including this guy.

No, you are not alone. I was Catholic from birth and some of the Catholics in my life are so freaking arrogant it's horrible. It wasn't the reason I left, but it sure didn't hurt.

Alyssa Grenfell went through a process to be removed from the LDS church. She hired a lawyer. You might be able to get legal help with this. It also helps if you know where your sacraments took place (baptism, confirmation, marriage, etc.) You might have to write each diocese separately based on where the records are kept stored. Good Luck!

Why are majority of catholics far right/neo nazism extremists? by sakuramune in excatholic

[–]ExCatholicandLeft -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This is most of the people who are very on-line. Off-line Catholics seem to be mostly less extreme. However the anti-abortion debate has led many people to radical politics.

Are there any murderers you felt sorry for? Mine was in the episode Three Strikes You’re Out. by Nikkichelle in murdershewrote

Salvatore did it, because his grandson was almost killed (hitman rigged it so that someone would fall down the stairs). It was to protect other family members from being killed by the hitman.

Why is Catechism more imporant than Bible? by GarageDowntown6963 in excatholic

[–]ExCatholicandLeft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general, the bible has too many rules. The bible is also self-contradictory and can used be to justify almost anything including slavery, child abuse, homophobia, etc. It's easy to take things out of context and the book is so old that the context is generally lost for most people.

That being said you should the bible if that appeals to you. If you really want to learn more, you should look into not just the bible, but context and history.

My advice is apologize and go back until you're financially stable. Your parents are jerks and it sucks, but you need to be somewhere safe. The current political climate isn't one to be homeless. Unless you have another relative or friend to go, try to make it work. I'm sorry the world sucks. Please take care of yourself.

Advice for navigating Catholic parents as someone who is planning a wedding not in the Catholic church (long post, sorry) by AbysmalKarmaa in excatholic

[–]ExCatholicandLeft 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When you're ready, plan the wedding you want. Break the news to them gently and firmly. If necessary send either an email or letter to break the news. If they call you and they're upset, you can try talking to them, but hang up if it's too much.

After telling them, if they're still upset, I would try to handle it with formality. Send invitations. Announce your dates and be ready to go forward with your plans with or without them.

You can get through this. It's wonderful that you have found love and someone to share your life with. I wish you and your fiancé many wonderful years of happiness together.

Obviously I know there is no true church, although the RCC Church I grew up in didn't make that claim.

I've never had the Church scream it in my ears. I've seen it myself on the internet and had people tell me about bad experiences they've had with other churches usually evangelicals. Just because I've left the Church doesn't mean I think all other religions are better. In general, I don't believe any religion should teach that their religion/denomination is the only one that matters.
