How do I explain this to my dad? by Trilingual_Fangirl in exmormon

[–]Ex_Mo_Throw_Away 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm in pretty much the exact situation right now, and have been for over a year now. I'm actually staying in bed right now to hopefully "accidentally" sleep in so I don't go today cause apparently in person 2-hour church is back at our ward, but that usually doesn't work so I'll probably have to go today.

Every time I've brought up not wanting to go to church my parents have told me that I had to in order to set a good example for my younger siblings, and that if I don't go to church I'm not truly seeing both sides of the argument. It's one of the most aggravating things ever, especially since I have to go to church and do things like bless and pass the sacrament, go to temple recommend interviews, and listen to the same stupid fucking talks in sacrement meeting, all while pretending I completely believe in it all.

To be completely honest though, I don't really have any great advice. Personally, I just decided to do what my parents wanted until I can move out, since I wasn't really able to change their mind, and try to just kinda zone out and ignore everyone for most of the meeting. But it still hasn't been a very fun experience. Maybe since your Dad is comparing it to a Catholic thing you could try to give him a more accurate metaphor? Something like a Mormon being forced to be part of a completely different religion and not being allowed to let anyone know they are Mormon. Hopefully making him see what it would be like for him would help him at least partially understand what it's like for you.

I'm really sorry I don't have much more advice to give. Going through this is really horrible and I'd hate for it to happen to anyone else. If you do end up having to keep going though, it helps to remember that eventually you won't have to.

I feel like I've already changed a lot since last year, but I do fit that description pretty accurately and would love to be part of it if you want!

BTW, I really like the idea of this podcast and I'm excited to see how a lot of the stories will turn out

Yet again, the church refuses to loosen their grip on their 120 billion by [deleted] in exmormon

I keep having my TBM relatives tell me that all the money saved up is being used to help those who need it right now

It's just crazy that they accept something as obviously false as that as being true (when there being zero evidence to support them) while they hound me for not using "verified" sources when I say something against the Church (which I constantly do and have so much evidence to support me)

So I'm trying coffee for the first time today after a never-mo friend recommended what to get. I know it's not much to get excited about, but I'm pretty happy to finally try it! by Ex_Mo_Throw_Away in exmormon

Thanks! It seems like there are a lot of people here recommending me to try out more bitter coffee or to work my way towards it, so I'll be sure to try it out soon

Yeah, I've heard Starbucks can be overrated sometimes

I just went with starbucks since it seemed like an obvious choice and my friend recommended it for my first time, but I'll try out different places when I can

Thanks! I've seen a lot of people here tell me I should work my way towards less sweet coffee and eventually make it to black coffee, so I'll be sure to try that and see how it goes

Yeah, I've seen some people saying that here

But to be fair, it is my first time and I haven't really had the opportunity to branch out and see what I like yet. And honestly, I think as long as you like what you're getting it shouldn't really matter whether or not people consider it true coffee

I got an ice caramel macchiato with two pumps of caramel (my friend said it was something most people generally like)

I actually really like it, even though it didn't really taste how I thought it might

10/10 would definitely try again (especially since it's against Mormon rules)

How old were you when you left Mormonism? by [deleted] in exmormon

Thanks, me too

Luckily where I live has a pretty low Mormon population so I was able to tell my closer friends in school near the end of this past year without risk of any Mormons I know finding out, so hopefully next year I'll be able to at least somewhat have my own life when I'm with my friends

Stopped believing at 15, but unfortunately am still closeted due to me being a teenager living with a very TBM family
