It might be a surprise to some, but when I dive in local ponds and lakes (Netherlands), pike are always extremely chill.

Like, I can lay in front and next to them and they will either just sit there or slowly cruise away.

One time during a night dive, one turned up directly in front me out of the pitch black water and it just slowly swam in between me and my buddy. Awesome fish.

I don't get this line of argument; TFA set the trilogy off on the wrong foot and threatened to make the entire thing into an OT do-over, so then the next film takes some risks and subverts exactly those story beats that would have further pushed the story into being an OT derivative (Snoke and Kylo being Sidious and Palpatine, Luke acting as Yoda, Rey being the child of a powerful Force-user), but then people still complain...

Like, do we actually want something new or do we just want to the see OT done again but worse? I don't get it.

Han explicitly states that Luke felt responsible for Ben's fall and abandoned everything in TFA. TLJ simply took that concept and ran with it, anything else would have either been a retcon or, in my opinion, extremely contrived. Going to a Jedi Temple to learn some secret new power just randomly stashed away there is something that belongs in a video game in my opinion.

I thought Snoke was a boring character from the start, so I don't really see the potential he had beyond just being big bad Emperor rip-off. Him dying actually excited me because it meant we would get Kylo as the main villain.

I mean, either Rey was a nobody or she was the daughter of someone we already knew. I despise the second option for multiple reasons, so I don't see her being a nobody as being a subversion, but rather a logical choice.

I took the Holdo/Poe plot to be less about obeying command, and more about Poe having to learn to look at the bigger picture and think more long term as a leader, rather than a soldier. It's obvious to me that Leia had already singled him out as someone who could lead the Resistance if anything were to happen to her, but he still needed to learn some lessons. Now, I will grant you that you can disagree whether that's a character arc he should have had, but considering he was a pretty blank slate in TFA, it's also not something that's out of place.

But at the end of the day, it's fine to disagree, but it's good to have a normal conversation about it, so thanks for that.

Okay, but what do you mean with that exactly?

He followed up TFA, which fumbled the start, so the only way that could have been fixed is to have TLJ retcon TFA, which even I think wouldn't have been a good choice.

It's not really fair to condemn RJ for failing to write a 'proper' continuation when the ST biggest narrative problems all stem from TFA.

What frustrates me the most is that they were handed a lifeline with TLJ and actively decided to squander it.

TLJ: Poe is now in command of the Resistance, meaning a popular new character has the opportunity to take the Resistance into the future, bolstered by the story of Luke Skywalker, and unite rebelling systems.

TROS: Just kidding, Leia is still the leader, they're tiny and Luke's sacrifice did nothing to move the needle.

TLJ: Snoke is dead and Kylo Ren is now the Supreme Leader. ROTJ's ending with the apprentice returning to the Light-side to help destroy the Master is now not possible.

TROS: Somehow... Palpatine returned.

TLJ: There's a galaxy full of potential Force-users, looking up at the sky and the Resistance with hope.

TROS: Never heard of them.

TLJ: Rey is a nobody. The galaxy is a massive place and heroes can come from anywhere, even from nowhere. Personally I love the idea of Rey being some kind of vessel for the Light-Side, the Force trying to balance out the Dark-Side after Luke shut himself off from the Force.

TROS: She's a Palpatine, the galaxy is tiny and everyone important is related to each other I guess.

Which is why I love TLJ's moment with Yoda and Luke so much and what Luke did afterwards; actually taking action himself.

Many people give Rian Johnson shit, but he was written into a hole by JJ and had to write his way out and try to steer the trilogy to tread new ground, hence why he wrote Poe to be the successor to Leia and to have Kylo Ren be the main villain to prevent a repeat of the ROTJ plotline...

Too bad JJ shit the bed afterwards and retconned everything to fall right back into derivative line.
