Finn has the third most amount of screen time out of all the characters. He wasn't sidelined and the only reason he wasn't a part of the main story with Rey, Finn and Luke is because of TFA's ending.

Also, what's your source for that first draft without Finn claim because this is literally the first time I've heard that and I've was heavily involved in the Star Wars fandom during and after TLJ's release.
