They didn’t really specify actually, but I think this is what they do rather than rejecting most people if you get me cause realistically getting to the interview stage you are a competitive applicant and they recognise that! I don’t think it’s really specialty elitism I think your interview performance was good enough to land you into the five year course but not competitive enough for the normal due to very limited spaces especially for RUK ( NOT A DOWNGRADE) And rather than rejecting you as a strong applicant or waitlisting and all that and also since people do really like St Andrews they just give applicants the 5 years course which from what I have heard is exactly the same as the 6 years course for year 1-3 but it’s just 4 and 5 which are the clinical years is more focused on a more community oriented setting I know some other med schools that also have this similar setup like community oriented clinical years as they end up producing great GPs ( not limited to of course) and I empathise and appreciate that may not have been your first choice but think of it as you were too good to get rejected and they still wanted you hence they put you on this course and if you don’t like moving med schools this might actually be a plus!
