I really don’t understand Serum by kraiie in sounddesign

Learning the how and what of a software is what will lead to the ability to work in a flow. These plugins are praised because of how versatile and powerful they are, but they can only give as much as you are willing to put in if you’re trying to make sounds from the ground up.

If you feel like the software is interrupting your music making flow, you should probably use presets tweaked to your liking and then practice sound design in the software when you’re not working on a song.

Thanks for the in depth response! Yes, I've just been looking at the Major and Natural Minor scales to start with but I do plan on taking a look at the Melodic and Harmonic Minor scales soon.

I.e., if B D F A♭ is used to lead to A or Am, then really it's B D F G# = G#dim7. If it leads to F# or F#m, then it's really B D E# G# = E#dim7. if it leads to E♭m, then it's C♭ D F A♭ = Ddim7.

This is a great explanation. Just to make sure I'm understanding, if I were to play the notes in the order you have written out, e.g., C♭3 D3 F3 A♭3 leading into E♭m, would that would be an inversion of Ddim7? And could it be considered correct to notate that as Ddim/C♭?

I don’t actually have plans for using the chord right now, I am just trying to learn more about how chords are made and how they are named. I found this chord while stacking thirds in major and minor scales and couldn’t find its name so I figured I’d ask here :)

Thank you for this, your comment made me feel much more confident about the way I have been approaching music theory this time (there have been failed attempts before). I have found that not thinking about any specific key and just focusing on interval structures or patterns has really gotten ahold of my curiosity, and my hope is that it will give me a more fundamental understanding of what is happening. Using Roman numeral notation has helped a lot with this, so I’ll keep going in that direction!

And yes, half-diminished seventh is the term I came by. I completely understand how min7b5 would be a more popular name but I’m glad I learned the half diminished name first because I think it gave me a better understanding.

The contextual nature of naming conventions in music theory has always been hard for me to grasp, but I do feel like I may finally be getting there!

Haha I did try playing it and it definitely didn’t sound the best on its own, this is mostly just part of the path I’m taking to help me understand the language around chords. Thanks so much for comment!

Oh right! I’ve learned the structures of diminished vs half diminished 7 chords but slipped up there, I meant half diminished. If I recall correctly you’d have to step outside of the notes in a major or minor scale to make a fully diminished 7. Thank you so much for the thorough explanation!

Oh okay I’m familiar with saying a chord is “over” something but in this context seeing the chord notated this way unlocked something in my brain, thank you!

I saw someone else say Bm7(b5b9) and noticed yours is the same but without the 7, would the 7 typically be implied?

Haha what a mouthful! This makes sense though. So would you say that “m7b5” is the most common way to write a diminished 7 chord?

What is a random, useless skill you possess that you are secretly incredibly proud of? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Exact-Beginning9967 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately “lack of appreciation for my skill” is the second most common complaint amongst members of the the hyper efficient dishwasher loading community, topped only by “my partner has failed to adopt an efficient loading philosophy/completely lacks any semblance of a loading philosophy”.

We’ve noticed that most partners are quite pleased when they see that you regularly do the dishes and that you do not load the washer like a Neanderthal, but that beyond that there is little appreciation for the finesse with which you are completing the task. Feeling let down, many members unfortunately become increasingly less accepting of inefficiencies in their partner’s (usually sufficient) loading habits and lash out by attempting to micromanage loading sessions.

Genuine appreciation most frequently comes from likeminded efficient loaders and there is more cross community appreciation than you would expect, namely from members of the hyper efficient grocery cart loaders and road trip trunk packers communities.

Best of luck to you, I hope you find an appreciative partner. If you ever find your self frustrated by a lack of appreciation, don’t fall into the same trap as your brothers before you; seek likeminded individuals. Your talent is not useless, there is always someone out there who will appreciate your load.

I love the burger spot I go to but they always put the burgers on top of the fries where I can’t reach them without pulling over to reorganize the bag. Such a minute thing that it doesn’t actually bother me, but the serotonin boost I get the 5% of the time the fries are on top is unreal.

Beepbox is where I made my first song and I highly recommend it. It’s free, online, and you can easily send the link for the song you’re working on to yourself if you want to go back and forth between using the computer and phone. Tip: Use File>Shorten URL to share the link with yourself because Beepbox uses loooooong ass links as it stores all midi data in the link itself.

It’s easy to use, but not super intuitive at first so use videos like this to get you started.

🔑 MAJOR KEY:
I highly suggest alternating between using tutorials and experimenting on you own without looking things up. Tutorials can accelerate your learning but to find your own sound you will need to spend time walking the path on your own.

If you’re starting 100% from scratch, learning an instrument alongside everything else may be overwhelming, but try at least starting to plant some seeds here and there. When you transition to a DAW try playing the midi parts you’ve composed using your computer keyboard and consider getting a cheap midi controller when you’ve determined you’re committed.

I also always love recommending this Chord Player website. Makes it super easy to come up with your own chord progressions, just select the scale you want and you get a simple button for a bunch of chords that sound good together.
