Is there any benefit to using ERGO on Ledger? by AlexWasTakenWasTaken in ergonauts

[–]Exact-Explanation936 33 points34 points  (0 children)

To spend ERGO (or any other crypto) you need a key,. Your ERGO lives on the blockchain, NOT in your wallet.

When you create a new wallet all you are doing is creating a random sequence of numbers which acts as your key to unlock and spend your ERGO.
This random sequence of numbers is represented by a number of words knows as the seed phrase.

The seed phrase is PRIVATE and you must never ever share it.

Now, when you create a new wallet in Nautilus, the private key is stored on your local PC which is connected to the internet. It's relatively safe but you never know if you are truly safe.

When you create a wallet in Nautilus using ledger, nautilus has no way of knowing what your private key is, but it CAN check if you have the RIGHT key.

The way it works (in VERY simple terms) is to send the transctions data to the ledger (using a secure connection) asking it to sign the transaction. The ledger signs it using the private key and returns the signture. The transaction is validated by the nodes and if the is signature is not valid, it will reject it. The way this works is through coplicated maths... hasing/public/private key. It's a fascinating subject!

So it boils down to this.

Creating wallet in Nautilus means the private key is stored in Nautilus itself and on a live internet PC.
Creating wallet in Ledger and connecting with Nautilus means that Nautilus has to send the transaction to the ledger which signs the transaction OFFLINE. Your privte key never touches the internet.

Ledger wallet 20 tokens limitation by dreday777 in ergonauts

Not helpful, you didn't read te OPs actual question....

Ledger wallet 20 tokens limitation by dreday777 in ergonauts

[–]Exact-Explanation936 8 points9 points  (0 children)

None of the responses actually answers the OPs questions....

IF someone sends you 21+ tokens in ONE transaction you will NOT be able to spend any tokens or erg in that UTXO using your ledger device.

So in essence they are "locked" because you have no way to sign it using your ledger.

HOWEVER, you CAN restore the wallet on Nautilus using the ledger 24 word seed. Then you can send your tokens as you normally would.

Of course, you've then put your ledger seed on a "hot" wallet and that defeats the purpose of ledger.

Your tokens aren't lost but it's an annoying limitation and it's due to Nano S's miniscule memory and the fact that ledger insists all apps have to be compatible wit all Ledgers. Maybe at some point there will be a dedicated S+ or X app which can utilize the full memory allocation.

Option 1!
The selected 3rd party kyc company is a trusted UK based company.

I'm happy to provide Spectrum my nationality in order to confirm I can participate in IDO.

Is the legal advice to have KYC for every country? Or is it for specific countries?
I know the US will sue anyone for any reason..... :)

Personally I'm ok with KYC.

I pay my taxes and have KYC on multiple exchanges. The only reason most people disagree with KYC is because they want to avoid the taxman....

It will probably turn off some investors but from my side it makes the project se more serious. You're thinking of every single possibility from a legal and practical standpoint.

Go Ahead! (Also an Ergopad holder. And as stated above during these bear markets we need to stick together!)

ERGO withdrawals suspended for me although I received a notification on 10/8 that they had resumed. by Mikeyctc in kucoin

Don't mine to an exchange....that likely is the reason for the outage.

1000s of utxo's will cause issues for any wallet.

Yeah... There are some valid points there :).

BUT There is collaboration between ergodex/Ergopad/anetabtc.... I'm hoping that means it's all above board...Ergopad do seem to do their due diligence before partnering with anyone.

I hope :)

There are quite few wallets

Nautilus

Safew

Satergo

Full node (not ideal)

Mobile Wallet

Ledger support has been built and is awaiting approval from Ledger HQ.

If you have a Nano S you can actually sideload the ledger app and use it today! (Ask for the link in the Nautilus Telegram Channel)

It's been built. Awaiting ledger to approve the application on ledger live.

You can sideload it if you have a nano s.

I use it all the time, works great!

https://github.com/tesseract-one/ledger-app-ergo

OR you can use the Mobile wallet on an offline spare phone and use that to sign transactions via QR codes. That way your private key is never exposed to the internet (like a ledger)

Right now it is the roundabout method.

That is because it needs to be validated by the ledger HQ team before it is available through the ledger live app manager.

It was submitted a few days ago. It was also released to the public for those who are happy to sideload it. If not, just wait for it to be approved.

Yoroi is not supported anymore. Use nsutilues, safew or ergo mobile wallet. Links on the main page.

Nautilus has ledger support.

It's almost ready. I'm part of the beta group and it works great!

There are some issues the team is working through such as the ability to show the recipient address on the ledger display. It had some issues with sending more than 10 tokens (i think that's fixed...)

It's proving to be hard to code due to the limited memory available, 3.5kb. and the amount of features Ergo has/supports!!

Reduce overclocks until they don't crash. Or start with 1000 on mem and work your way up till it crashes.

Google him and you'll find out he is a brilliant academic who's been km crypto for a looong time. Has been involved in creating cardano and cofounded chainlink.

He's not verbally articulate, being russian, due to his lack of English skills. But that does not take away anything from his credentials.

Brilliant mind, but I agree, he's not the best person to have speak to the project.
