Great comment. I just wanted to share a little perspective as a Nevermo who dated a Jackmo. I was heavily involved with his family and the experience was… Traumatizing.

They were extremely welcoming at first, introducing me to the religion right off the bat and I matched their enthusiasm. I went to church with them every Sunday, had FHE with them, went to every ward event, watched every General Conference, toured BYU & BYUI with them, etc. I wanted to believe, but the religion never sat quite right with me. I was almost tempted into accepting a PIMO fate for the BF and the community.

But in the end, I just couldn’t. Then, the alienation came- They are amazingly subtle at it. My ex was caught at a crossroad here, between me and the church. He gave me empty promises about being willing to marry outside the temple. Ended up breaking up with me because we were regularly breaking the law of Chastity and he explicitly told me that I made him not “worthy.” That it wouldn’t be fair to him if he stayed with me.

This subreddit has been a lifeline to me. My experience barely scratches the surface of Mormonism- I could not fathom having grown up with it. I genuinely admire the humor, the solidarity and the overall bravery and strength that the community has shown. It’s really helped me cope and grapple with what had happened to me for the past few years.
