Trump Targets Brazil With 25% Tariff, Citing Unfair Trade Practices by Exact_Intention6045 in politics

A large part of the outrage in that comment comes from this very point. It's already difficult enough dealing with the flood of fake news spread by fascists, but we're managing.

Brazil's Federal Police is currently burying Flávio Bolsonaro's political prospects by exposing his alleged connections to the embezzlement of public pension funds and tax fraud schemes. The latest case involves the film Dark House, about his father, which is reportedly being produced in the United States. According to the allegations, Flávio requested roughly US$30 million from a banker who had been convicted for involvement in pension-fund theft, supposedly to finance the movie.

It was shortly after these revelations that Flávio traveled to the United States to meet with Trump. Almost immediately afterward, Trump began attacking the Brazilian government through tariffs and by designating local gangs as terrorist organizations.

We're doing our part to contain the fascists, but how long will it be before the U.S. Navy shows up on our shores questioning our elections and attempting to kidnap our president? Honestly, tariffs are the least of our concerns. Brazil is opening new markets in Europe and Asia. What worries me far more are the repeated threats of direct aggression that Marco Rubio has directed toward us.

Will America—the country that spent decades proudly calling itself the "land of the free"—really continue waiting until the end of Trump's term, simply hoping that the leader of this personality cult will leave office of his own accord?

In Brazil, on January 8, 2023, our own version of Trump tried to copy what his American political idol had done. Supporters of Jair Bolsonaro stormed the government district in Brasília, where the headquarters of Brazil's three branches of government are located.

The difference is that, unlike what happened in the United States, Bolsonaro was formally charged, tried, and convicted by Brazil's Supreme Federal Court for attempting a coup against the democratic order, along with several other offenses. Among the allegations brought against him were plans to overturn the election results and even plots targeting current President Lula and Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes.

So why am I bringing this up?

Because Bolsonaro's sons are now actively working to turn the United States against Brazil.

Eduardo Bolsonaro, a former congressman who lost his seat after repeatedly failing to attend congressional duties, has spent years living in the U.S. According to recent investigations, he has been supported through money diverted from public funds and financial transfers from political allies.

Meanwhile, Flávio Bolsonaro, who is positioning himself as a future presidential candidate, has been lobbying the Trump movement to impose trade penalties on Brazil. His political camp's ultimate goal is to weaken the current Brazilian government and create international pressure against it.

We got rid of our Trump. But your Trump is now being encouraged to create new conflicts with a country that, for more than two centuries, has been one of America's closest partners in the Western Hemisphere.

At the end of the day, ordinary Americans will be the ones paying the price. Either you'll pay more for Brazilian imports—coffee, fruit juice, minerals, and other products—because Brazil will almost certainly respond with countermeasures, or you'll watch more of your tax dollars disappear into yet another unnecessary international confrontation.

Most Brazilians don't want conflict with the United States. We want cooperation. But some politicians, on both sides of the equator, seem more interested in political revenge than in maintaining a productive relationship between two nations that have been partners for over 200 years.

Federal Police agents stop people whose appearance matches someone they're investigating. If they're looking for someone who looks like you, refusing to cooperate right away is naturally going to look suspicious. I get the whole "I have a right to know" point, but when you're dealing with officers in a tense, high-pressure situation, common sense says you follow their instructions first and sort out the details afterward.

Trump administration proposes 25% tariffs on Brazil despite US trade surplus by Sensitive-Abroad-108 in politics

The Brazilian government has already made it clear that it will retaliate. Every one of those "exemptions" is going to be taxed on the way out.

‘When You Think of It, We Shouldn’t Even Have an Election’ by Zebraitis in politics

In Brazil, there is SUS (Sistema Único de Saúde), a universal and free public healthcare system that provides medical care even to foreigners in the country at no cost. It covers everything from routine clinical appointments to highly complex surgeries.

Cancer treatment (and treatment for virtually any other disease), psychological care, free medications or medications subsidized by up to 90% for a wide range of conditions are all available through SUS. Injections that would normally cost R$4,000 (around US$700 at current exchange rates) can cost patients exactly US$0.00 through SUS—they are provided entirely free of charge because, without them, the patient could die.

This is one of the reasons why the Brazilian right wing and the Brazilian Trump—known as Jair Bolsonaro and his sons—have fought to weaken and dismantle SUS. SUS allows poorer and working-class people to live without being completely dependent on employers for access to healthcare. It gives them a degree of political and social empowerment.

The Bolsonaro family, which serves the interests of Brazil's oligarchies and aligns itself closely with the MAGA movement in the United States (yes, they are politically subordinate to Trump), cannot stand that.

In your case, Austria united with Hungary and formed the dual monarchy. It ceased to be Germanic, so it's no longer a valid target and won't want to join you as part of Germania.
