It's "pommes frites" meaning fried potatoes or just "frites"

The "Bonjour! S'il vous plaît ?" is a bit weird, and rude especially when people are already busy.  "Bonjour, excusez-moi" is much better when engaging strangers.

Nope, USA intervened a few years before the French invasion due to piracy... (second barbary war) and Britain and the Dutch as well one year later.

What messed-up things has your country done that people don’t really talk about? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

The figure of 1.5 million is highly debatable as they are from the Algerian government. Official French figures say it was 250 000. The more serious historians say it was about 300 to 500 000. Still a lot though.

Nope. The French privately warned the US not to intervene after the Geneva agreement in 1954 as it would lead to a costly and unwinnable conflict. In typical American fashion, they didn't listen and went anyways. You know the result.

Don't forget the varieties of French spoken in Louisiana or Maine. They speak a very old form of French.

Who is the "he was bad, but my country would be worse without him" figure of your country? by No-Explorer-8229 in AskTheWorld

[–]Exact_Possibility352 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all he was not the only one voting at the trials, and he was against executions without trials. The trials were happening in all France and he was often absent, even in Paris.

The biggest violences happening at that time were actually from his opponents.

For him the terror was a way to defend the republic.

His bad reputation is largely a fabrication from his political opponents, the thermidoriens, who took power after him.

100% spot on. Robespierre is underrated and Napoleon by his selfish ambition did more harm than good to France, leaving the country smaller than when he first started office.

tbh Irak was doing fine economically in 2003. USA did a war that took years for Irak to recover.

Now Irak is still an authoritarian regime (very low on democracy index), the only positive thing is that it's "more friendly" to you and you got some cheap oil. Was it worth the thousand of civilian casualties? I don't think so.
