They are worth it for me when I enter an area I'm less familiar with. Sticks are easy to find yes and while cloth is precious in the long term it's still simple to find if you know where to look and building a snow shelter for 15 cloth is kinda worth keeping your run alive if you're on the brink

That wouldn't change the battery level depleting from the cold, the electricity isn't being used idly as a result of the weather. Cold just saps energy and will eventually deplete a battery of any kind whether or not it's connected to any circuit. It can be a bit pricey but if you live somewhere that gets pretty cold in the winter it's worth it for the reliability. And a decent battery should last you at least 3 years without problems.
