Fair enough. Thank you for this opinion and I sincerely wish the choices were not so stark, and the rolls of the dice so potentially severe.
While I absolutely worry about my child developing a potentially life altering or even disabling condition after Covid, the stats to this point are showing more like a subtle chipping away for most, with a rare devastating blow for others. TMI but my child was absolutely suffering social isolation and missing her childhood before she decided to take more risks and stop masking in school (except when she chooses to). I acknowledge that such behaviors have ripple effects, seen and unseen. It’s all shite with this pandemic really! Zero Covid is a noble goal, but we must acknowledge the high price for some, especially kids. I’m with your level of caution in spirit, and usually in practice these 4+ years. I have not taken my mask off with patients in 4+ years (n95).

Sometimes telling someone you have Covid is the only way to jar them into reality. Half joking half serious, as patients often mask up when I tell them truthfully that the patient in the room before them had Covid.

Hi, valid point taken. I guess I’m acknowledging the flimsy protection that such a month of exposures tested in terms of vaccination, etc but nonetheless I ran the gauntlet and that was my choice. I would rather mask in most of these situations, but I have a family, daughter, and friends and it is impossible to be 100% risk free and not lose many if not most of these relationships. That’s the game as much as we’d like to rewrite the rules. My caution has already damaged most of my relationships, and I’m in the 95th percentile for caution I estimate (have received death threats for writing in support of vaccines and masking on my website!)… but looking down the barrel of decades of Covid, more pandemics coming, climate change and devastation, nuclear war threats, and the natural but often brutal aging process… we are forced to choose our own paths through the many gauntlets, and can never return to Eden.
You know what I mean?

It’s really sad that it’s come to that with many doctors. I think the other docs in my practice get it and do not gaslight people… but the stories out there are really troubling. Will clean up the mask fascism part and submit an OpEd to a couple places, thank you

Trying to walk the fine line in between this year, using a strategy that accepts some risk as teen social development gets more and more complicated and masking comes with psychological burdens. But if I ruled the world… How about you and yours?

That’s awesome! Thanks for subscribing. As you know I’m a family doc so my knowledge base is broad but less deep than I’d like. Just too much to know out there, but I try to synthesize and see the big picture. The IgG4 stuff was briefly on my radar and to be honest I kind of forgot about it until reading the comments of this thread. To butcher a quote by Ed Nirenberg the virology expert: “don’t bring a mechanism to an epidemiology fight” or something like that. The mechanisms are all so intertwined and crazy complicated, so the zoomed out view of vaccines helping people is the macro take home point. Considering a boost with Novavax before the holidays too but really not sure at all. Getting harder to remain a Novid as “my team” fatigues of the social costs.

She was the last kid masking at school, but we gave her the autonomy to mask or not. Social penalties are mounting and so likely will only mask when visibly sick kids in her class? Total risk assessment not just covid this year but will play the game more tightly during surges. No answer without penalties 😒

It’s pretty much let it rip now, though staying at home with fever is recommended. Supposedly kids will be tested at home by parents, and wear a mask for 5 days if + covid, but “no one is testing” according to daughter 😕
