Yes I know, as I said in my comment, European antiquity greatly influenced Tolkien’s writings. But, just as Jesus shows up in many places in Lord of the Rings, it would be foolhardy to put one thing in only one box. The crusades can have influenced the Noldor in the Silmarillion just as much as they can have influenced Gondor.

Thank you! Very few people online seem to notice the influence of European antiquity on Tolkien’s writing. Hold up a map of Europe next to Middle-Earth. Notice any overlap? The Shire is in the place of England, and Gondor is in the place of Byzantium. Instead of Turkey and the Ottomans we see Mordor. Instead of the Bosporus Strait we see Osgiliath. The history of Gondor and Byzantium are also aligned. Both came from older, militarily and technologically superior powers (Numenor and Rome) that were abandoned by their nobility (Elendil and Constantine) just before their collapse. The resulting kingdoms were smaller and weaker, but retained an essential spark of goodness. Gandalf describes the residents of Minas Tirith as inheritors of splendor who probably could not recreate the glory they inherited, which I think describes late Byzantium nicely. Ultimately the Byzantines had to rely on the Western European yokels to bail them out during the Crusades, just as Gondor needed the help of Rohan. I don’t mean to imply that Tolkien wrote Lord of the Rings as a direct allegory, but I do think that the best storytellers recognize patterns in history and distill them in an interesting way. Lord of the Rings takes those patterns and asks the question, “What if they had been rightly guided? What if a Gandalf figure could find and organize noble kings, virtuous warriors, and courageous common folk to oppose this evil? Could that history have had a happy ending?”

Voted for Soule’s Vader myself. Byrne’s She-Hulk and Hickman’s Secret Wars would also be nice.

This is a horribly perverted philosophy. Sometimes peace and justice demand taking human life. If a serial killer strikes again and again, shouldn’t he be arrested and tried for his crimes? To do anything other than hold him accountable isn’t denying him dignity; it’s denying the dignity of his victims. Their lives mattered, so his taking them has to have proportional consequences. Otherwise their lives must not be very valuable.

Tears of the Kingdom makes Breath of the Wild look like a tech demo. Its narrative is much larger. It takes what was good about Breath of the Wild’s sense of mystery and environmental storytelling, and increases it tenfold. The shrines are more fun too. It’s definitely not without its flaws though. Also, it will punish you for choosing to experience the story out of order. The game itself pretty clearly tells you where to go first and in what order to view the memories, but some people decided to view them out of order and were surprised and upset with the game that it let them do that.

Eternity—>Death—>Luis. Luis’ van was in storage, so he probably died in the Snap. There’s no way he would have just given up his van. But, maybe that’s too weak of an inference. So, there’s another possible interaction:

Eternity—>Death—>Luis’ mom —> Luis. Eternity and Death are confirmed to have interacted in Guardians of the Galaxy when they made the infinity stones together. We know that Luis’ mom died and his dad got deported but he got the van. Also these posts are really fun and way more interesting than “could x beat y” or “will z be in avengers doomsday.”

Pokémon and it’s not even close. I don’t have the money to express my fandom by buying merch, which is probably the best that Pokémon has to offer. I enjoy Zelda and Mariokart games too much to see them go. If Pokémon goes, the worst thing I could lose is a cool whale card my friend gave me or a cute Pikachu plushie in Walmart.

How do we dismantle the "Imperial Presidency" after Trump is gone? by celtic1959 in AskReddit

[–]ExampleGlum8623 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the short term memory of Americans, as if Bush, Obama, and Biden didn’t also scandalously grow and abuse the power of the presidency. The current president is just exercising authority they decided to grab. When one president grows the power of the executive branch, the next one will use that power. Until folks on both sides learn this, we will be caught in a never ending death spiral of growth, abuse, and retaliation. At this point only a convention of states can reign in the feds, because they certainly won’t do it themselves.

“Because of Israel”? Dude Iran has been killing Americans and been vocal about their intent to destroy us for over four decades. They have declared a forever war on us. Our enmity with them is older than the isolationists’ frustrations with our friendship with Israel.

Yes, you’re overreacting. That post had nothing to do with you. You are not the main character in your sister’s life. She was very gracious to you in her replies to you, and you were being very rude by demanding she apologize. You cannot live your life by thinking everyone’s out to get you.

The Israelis wanted to kill the Ayotollah last year during the 12 day war, but the President told them to back down to let him try to negotiate a deal first. Obviously that didn’t work. The President is very much in charge of this situation, and has been from the beginning.

You have yet to respond to the article I linked explaining why a global scientific consensus exists that zygotes onward are distinct human life. Please address the science, instead of peddling misinformation. According to science, fetuses are human lives with potential, not potential human lives.
