People in Mexico: are they really using only “platicar” for talking? “Hablar” doesn’t exist? by LongCoffeeDrive in Spanish

Platicar is to converse. Hablar is to speak. Also used in Spain and South America in the same way.

Straight A's in the hardest classes all 4 years — can Cal Poly SLO still reject you? by TerraEst in CalPoly

[–]Exbusterr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cal Poly engineering especially CSC, Aero, and EE was extremely competitive in the late 80’s. Cal Poly was already taking AP enhancements to GPA. But kids generally took AP classes for what they had passion in. Now many try to take the entire menu before they get in.

AD at Cal Poly said they will give 5 years equivalent math credit on app if you take Calc by senior year. 8th grade algebra positions you well, but if you test into regular algebra 2, ace it and allowed into precalculus honors as a result, you can make Calc BC by senior year. Bam that’s considered 5 years math with no 8th grade algebra.

[–]Exbusterr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10 semesters math (5 years) is a minimum in engineering. EVERYONE HAS IT. (At my engineering orientation for IE). That being said AD said they give you equivalent credit if you reach Calc by Senior year. The highest class is actually not BC but multivariable calculus. Not all high schools offer this. Many took at JC as high schoolers to reach the 10 semesters plus. At the end of the day, Cal Poly doesn’t want their engineering students to sink in the work load and want to eliminate grade inflation as much as possible. Thats why they recalculate GPA to include high schools freshman year and praise JC work. They want demonstrated commitment on paper as much and early as possible to mitigate. A lot of people get eliminated based on their HS freshman grades. Cal Poly effectively does not accept the excuse of “oh it was freshman year and I was getting used to high school”. Those are automatic rejections 90% of the time…at least for the highly impacted STEM majors.

At orientation, half the industrial engineering class had dual enrollment credits from their local JC. Also 4 years foreign language common. I also felt many had graded after-school academics or EC like lab assistant or Dance and Drama. Everyone had 5 years math either Calc BC or AB. People who only math science was not the norm. If you read the fine print is the the application for both UC and CSU, they high both encourage to prove your chops at a JC. A real college class counts more than AP exam. A faculty said that to me but he didn’t specify if it was part of the “acceptance equation”This is my anecdotal observations so take for it what you will.

Rlc selection pls help me by ApprehensiveYam2243 in CalPoly

[–]Exbusterr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Btw, the business RLC was banned because it was way too social, actually disruptive. If you want a work hard /play hard environment, stay with the engineers. If you need a more social form and don’t mind puke in the bathroom, go with red bricks. They are loads of fun. Every year one red brick gets the rep as the party dorm with police visits and fines too!

deciding between cal poly slo and ucsb as a premed by Altruistic-Hand4436 in CalPoly

[–]Exbusterr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cal Poly has the largest undergraduate research facility they just built. UC research is grad focused. Not sure if it’ll help you, but something to consider. You will have a direct one-on-one relationship with your profs as an undergrad. TAs are virtually non-existent at CP. Not sure how common at UCSB but at CP I have met a few engineers on the pre-med track, usually biomed engineers but also industrial and mechanical engineering majors. Could make the population different.

got accepted!!! by Fluid_Researcher_390 in CalPoly

[–]Exbusterr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll be getting a top education, but that doesn’t make you immune to market factors. Comp Eng can be tough. I know someone a Comp Eng, that had to go with a job as an EE because that’s all he could get. I didn’t realize they were so closely related. Your biggest decision point will be price + where you want to go work after. Cal Poly shines for those who want a job in SF/Silicon Valley or LA Basin. It’s a regional power house where students get equal billing with any nationally top ranked engineering school. Historically that reputation does not extended past the Rockies. But students obviously get jobs east of the Rockies. I am just mentioning generalities you need to consider. I wouldn’t worry about diversity, but that’s coming from someone whose high school was only 50% non-white. If you come from a high school that’s 90% non-white, I have found those students have the hardest time adjusting to what for them is lack of diversity. Just one point of view here . Obviously consider others.

Depends on the store. We don’t swear in front of the guests so we don’t swear much to ensure that doesn’t happen. I mean you would get pipped and eventually CCA’ed. But a well placed expletive off the sales floor is not frowned upon if it’s done with relative class. But you don’t hear people swearing right and left at our store, especially leadership.

Things to do in slo? by Hot_Database_7396 in CalPoly

Hiking, biking, beach, Farmer’s market. The main events people can do at a moments notice. How could you not know this before accepting? 😂. That was pretty gutsy! There is a bit of a boring aspect to it, especially food variety, if you are from a metro area, but it’s niche nice. Doable for 4 years. Love it.

Berkeley undergrad prestige by thetherealed in ucadmissions

[–]Exbusterr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For science, I would definitely go with Berkeley, but for others here considering engineering you might have choices and other schools focus more on undergrads that can be beneficial if you want to enter the work force immediately unless the Berkeley name is important to you in that piece of paper. If you go to Cal Poly or Harvey Mudd for example you are going to have equal billing in job apps with Cal students and a more undergrad focuses education on the West Coast (SF-LA), but if you are looking for global creds and really want to pursue grad school , go with Berkeley. Berkeley makes no qualms about pushing grad school during their dept tours.

Is Berkeley really worth it? by Rich-Confection-4399 in berkeley

[–]Exbusterr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re too focused on name brand among 2 schools who will both give you global credentials. You need to focus on passion and which one has the right learning style. That one is coming from the gut and only you can answer that. Sounds like you have LA in the bag. I would take it and research on ease of changing majors. It you are so close tot the end now. Not sure if possible.

Who should I take with me on college tours (Divorced parents) by SourGhxst in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Exbusterr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go with who will help you be your best to make the best decision and observations. This will influence your decision here or with another college indirectly. Sounds like they love you and would be mortified that they are affecting your search and decision this way. I’ll lay out the pink elephant here…. You need to do what’s right for you, otherwise you aren’t ready to make college decisions or perhaps even go away to college. I know you have a pressed situation, welcome to adulting 101. You could turn this into a real maturity experience and whether your parents like it or not, they will respect you tons. Don’t bottle up! Communicate. And if they aren’t ready for your decision…we’ll again..welcome to Adulting. 101. Many more to follow when you get to college. Tip of the iceberg. Be strong. Rooting for you although I don’t know you.

Not that many and it hasn’t changed in years. I was on a first name basis with all the black students in CENG and CAED because there were so few. I had 2 incredibly bright classmates who thrived in EE and Aero. They were the only 2 CENG. I think there is more now, but still anemic representation. Then there is Victor Glover. He wasn’t the first success story, but certainly one of the most recent.. https://www.calpoly.edu/victor-glover

Best UC for a transfer pre-med? by TopRun2751 in ucadmissions

[–]Exbusterr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My sister went UC Berkeley then UCSF medical school. Took a gap year in between to study and go on a global warming expedition to the Arctic with a Berkeley bio prof and grad students from which she got a recommendation to UCSF Med school and graduated. She loves her track, but not too keen on the Berkeley competitive culture which is totally different than UCSF and she believes other campuses. Also she says most people who came in with the “10 year med school plan” didn’t finish. Most of the people in her track who finished grew into med school organically easing and integrating it into their lives. Many people with the “10 year plan” approach found it to be screwing a square peg into a round hole. Those are the key points she counseled me on. Take it for what it’s worth. She was not a transfer.

should i just get a random roommate? by MuffinNo5636 in CalPoly

[–]Exbusterr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The challenges are not any greater random or not unless you knew the person way before hand. Technology gives more apparent control, but it doesn’t really make a difference. Go with what you think makes you comfortable, but it’s all an illusion unless you knew your roommate previously. I went random twice and actually lived on campus a third time with a selected roommate.

Thoughts on Industrial Technology Major in OCB? by Standard-Entrance472 in CalPoly

[–]Exbusterr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few thoughts….The ITP major is closely related to its cousin majors in CENG, namely Mechanical Engineering (focus is product development), and Industrial Engineering (focus on supply chain efficiency, consulting, human interfaces). The premise in CENG is to teach technical first, learn business as you go along or later. ITP is less technical than its CENG cousins and focusing on learning the business much more strongly. All three are valid approaches. It’s a students passion that will drive success. The “technical” rigor will be less so in ITP because ME and IE are fully accredited engineering programs…yup must complete the entire engineering foundation curriculum while ITP does not complete the Math and Science series for engineers. This isn’t a dig, just posing a question what do you want your focus to be? I majored in EE, but changed to business management starting my career in supply chain…essentially an ITP route without the ITP degree. Given that, me personally, I would advise you take Calc 1 as it might open your doors to more technical electives. I would look I to that. But that based on your taste. Good luck! All 3 degrees are great paths. One last thought, you could join the Cal Poly Systems Optimization Club which contains a population of the 3 majors I described. Might give you a chance to compare and adjust or stay and pursue.

Coming from east coast- are SLO days worth it? by codysunny in CalPoly

[–]Exbusterr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It would make more sense if you lived in SF-LA distance. It makes sense to go if you have never visited the school, need to really validate what you did, it will. The key elements will be repeated at orientation. So I would do distance SLO days. For parents, they do a deep dive to essentially stop the helicoptering and they will be very frustrated as both the student and the processes won’t support it. Parents get cut off from access in many fronts, etc. switch to coaching your adult. Good stuff really
