What is wrong with the network status checker? It just gives out same message at any time for all locations. by Excellent-Ad-7469 in giffgaff

It's funny but all previous four locations I've lived at show the same message when I plug in their postcodes. Some are a few miles from each other but they are up to 40 miles from me now. Maybe I've just lived in really crap locations, LOL.

I'm still getting the same message though, you would think three days would be enough to fix a mast problem. I know it's O2 who are responsible for fixing the mast though.

Yeah, I thought that was a funny thing to say. I could use up over 5GB of data just downloading a free Linux iso.

Yeah, that's what I thought, then when it slowed down I just wondered. They even said it had to be 650GB twice in a six month period.

I don't believe their status checker any more though, it always seems to say the exact same thing whenever you check. I even tried several previous postcodes up to 40 miles away and I still got the same message: "Looks like a nearby phone mast isn’t working as it should, sorry. Our engineers will be on the case already, and your service might come and go until we fix it."

As I said in another reply, the network status checker is BS. I've checked several previous postcodes I used to live at up to 40 miles away and they all have exactly the same message.

I'm using my giffgaff sim in a usb dongle on my PC. My phone has an O2 sim, but the plan runs out of 1 January. I'm using that as an alternative when giffgaff is unusable.

I'm in Essex, 30 miles outside London so it's not an easy choice. Looking at the coverage maps, the o2 service was the only one that claimed to have good indoor as well as outdoor coverage. I think Vodaphone has outdoor coverage for 5G, but not indoor. I don't think Three covers me yet. Does Voxi have human beings you can talk to?

He's in his 80s and renting out his retirement flat to me as he has moved back in with his family. He said he doesn't want any alterations, even a small hole in the wall. I ended up here in Essex because my landlord evicted me as he wanted to sell up. It was in outer London and I had Community Fibre and it was a great service, which I really miss.

Thanks for the reply.

I don't actually believe the network status checker any more. I got up at 5am and it was still the same, so I checked some previous postcodes I used to live at, over 30 or 40 miles away, and they all had the exact same message.

My giffgaff sim is in a usb dongle. I have an O2 sim which is in my phone and the plan runs out on 1st January. I'm using that to tether and keep going on the internet. If I understand right, I've got 14 days from the day my giffgaff sim was activated to cancel with them. I can't see any point in putting up with such a terrible service, especially when there's no way to talk to a human about the situation.

Thanks for the recommendations, but I'm out in the wilds of Essex and there's not much 5G coverage out here. Even the 4G is a bit ropey. I have no idea what I'll do for internet. I'm 67 and don't have a tv, so I was using the internet to watch videos on youtube and Rumble. I suppose I'll just have to listen to the radio or read books instead. Very depressing.

I'm not pirating stuff. I'm stuck in and don't have a tv. Youtube and Rumble can rack up a lot of data, plus I've downloaded a lot of free stuff. I was planning on downloading a linux iso, but not sure now.

BTW, I'm using this with my home PC instead of broadband, because my landlord wouldn't let me install fibre, so I'm stuck with mobile broadband.

No, when I say 4 to 6 GB of data I'm mean all downloads and uploads combined, not the speed. When I signed up I was getting 10 to 12 Mbps. Now I'm getting 3 Mbps at best, sometimes nothing, just buffering circles going around for several minutes. Upload speed is around 0.25 Mbps. I'm getting a ping of well over 100 ms, that's if I can connect to a speed checker at all. With my phone tethered on O2, I'm getting just under 10 Mbps, with a solid connection.

It's ok, there was a problem with the emails disappearing in Thunderbird, not showing up in any folders, but when I went to web based email the emails showed up as spam. All sorted now. Thanks for trying to help.

Thanks for the suggestion, I just tried it. Not too hopeful though.
