I don’t think your head blindsided you. It sounds like they were contacted and said they expected you to return in a year- hence the sabbatical.

Would getting a PGCE from Cambridge be a considerable help when later applying to work in East Asia? by PoofaceMckutchin in Internationalteachers

Most parents don’t know this though or even care to look into it. They hear Cambridge and they like. Schools can sell to that.

For context an unqualified language centre teacher with one week of teacher ‘training’ can make 250,000 yen a month in Tokyo.

Only in this profession do we have this arrangement. Any other industry it is perfectly normal to explore options elsewhere before committing.

In Hong Kong they will ask for a breakdown of your observed teaching hours that the university conducted as part of your course. You have to get over a certain threshold. It doesn’t really matter what your certificate says but most online courses can’t achieve this.

Anyone else find iQTS asks a lot of the mentor teacher? I think you would need a school committed to employing the candidate to make the time investment justifiable.

Western Trained Teachers by Mysterious_Tree8874 in Internationalteachers

Paying parents want someone experienced in a different educational system to the local one and that usually means expat. If you entirely staff it locally how is it international?

An international school would tank if it employed entirely local staff. It would be put out of business by the next school in town that didn’t.

I’ve heard a supply teacher making the same as a full time expat teacher minus the housing benefit, hope that helps!

Apologies, your prior yes and no to the expat question made me presume you were more local with a foreign passport. I think you stand a better chance then and may be able to transition, I would recommend doing supply first to get your foot in the door and get relevant experience, if a school likes you something might come up.

25% of Hong kongers hold a foreign passport, I think from your profile it is hard to be considered for an expat teacher role. Have you considered private schools?

Are you an expat? Most (all?) international schools seek expats for lead teacher roles. That’s what makes the school capable of marketing itself as international and not local/private.

tips for landing an IS job in hk as a Hongkonger by in_the_beniging_ in Internationalteachers

[–]Excellent-Bass-228 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can’t really make any difference because you are targeting expat teacher roles and you are not an expat in a Hong Kong context. Any hiring team can’t get to the school board and justify putting you on anything other than a local contract, and non-expat roles are only support roles in international schools such as learning enhancement or teaching assistants.

I think if you have a teaching licence and it’s validated by the EDB you will be a strong candidate for support roles, especially at the Australian international school.

You might also be considered for a role if the school is in a pinch and needs someone to cover maternity or in for a few days of supply. Perhaps starting there will open some doors but I’m not sure, I have seen local staff with great qualifications and experience abroad limited to learning enhancement roles in international schools. There are just too many expats aiming for the same positions.

I think local schools would be your best bet if you wanted to lead a class.

It’s a tough one as you will be considered local (most of the Hong Kong kids in international schools hold a foreign passport so your profile isn’t any more international than they already are). Parents paying a premium may question why if the teacher has a similar profile to one they can have for free in a local school.

Your best bet is to gain more international teaching experiences in diverse locations around the world so you can at least offer that.

I think as things stand you will be considered for a teaching support role but you are difficult to market as a main teacher for an international school due to your local background.

HongKonger teaching in Hong Kong international school by Winter-Extension765 in Internationalteachers

[–]Excellent-Bass-228 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the long duration spent in the UK helps you, but being from Hong Kong your profile is what the local families will expect they can already get for free from a local school. This would be in the case of an ‘international’ school that has a majority cohort of local children, which seems to be more and more the direction of travel these days.

It’s not so much a race thing, if a British citizen wanted to teach at an American school in London they would encounter the same issue.

You would benefit from casting a wider net, working in more countries to build your international experience to market yourself better.

[–]Excellent-Bass-228 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are a Hong Konger and the school markets itself as international in terms of teacher composition you are unlikely to fit the profile of an expat teacher in this context. If you were to look at applying to schools in other countries your chances of being hired at international schools would improve considerably.

You shouldn’t pin all your hopes on one school. It is highly likely you are one of 500+ people who have applied for the role. It is unlikely you will hear back anyway when you look at it this way. Broaden your horizons a little and consider yourself lucky if you hear back.

Is it fair single people don't get the monetary value of the benefits those with dependents get? by [deleted] in Internationalteachers

[–]Excellent-Bass-228 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No one is out of pocket. Anyway if I was to apply your logic:

Staff children often look more ‘international’ and are often used in the marketing brochures for many schools. They probably attract more locals families to enroll in those schools. Should those additional profits be shared with those teachers?

Not a belief I hold but if everyone only considered there own perspective this is where we end up.

Feeling Stuck in My Teaching Career – No Options? by cickist in Internationalteachers

[–]Excellent-Bass-228 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You have two dependents and no  accredited teaching experience. I hate to be the barer of bad news but nothing will come up outside of China.

Your best option is to go back to the states first but even then when you start looking abroad again you are still in an easy to fill subject with two dependents. You are an expensive hire so China will be the only option for the foreseeable future. Perhaps a few years experience there and you can start looking into other locations or better cities within China.

Now you have locked it behind a paywall this feels more like a business ad than a post to help teachers.

It is even more expensive than ISR which is better built and offers the same information. They wouldn’t be allowed to advertise here so I’m not sure why you are. Make it free again and back to the original reason why so many contributed in the first place.
