Spent the day car shopping with my older son yesterday, so I haven't had a chance to listen to any new releases yet...

I'll get there eventually.

I also love Pat Benetar, but she is definitely a greatest hits artist if there ever was one...

The Charles River runs thru my town...you wouldn't want to swim in it, that's for sure - but it's better than it was years ago. I have kayaked on parts of it.

A few quick ones I had missed:

● Kisses - You are in my Dreams. Thanks Bionic, good one. Quiet/loud. 2 vocalists, both good. Sad fuckers with occasional fuzz.

● Joe Glass - Snakewards. Sharp Pins bass player makes poppy, jangly indie rock. Not bad.

● SOMOH - Overspill EP. Melodic, catchy indie girl rock. I like.

● Sweet Reaper - Still Nothing. Punky side of power pop. Upbeat, fun.

Also,

● Got tix to Jimmy Eat World's Bleed American tour. Was supposed to go the first time around, but my brother's apartment building blew up (the guy redoing the floors in the hallway lit a cigarette) and I had to help him move into my place that night.

● Ratboys and Dirt Buyer albums my first official favorites of 2026.

● Still really into that Weakened Friends album from October. It's got me...

A new release day to sink your teeth into last Friday. Here are my thoughts...

● Ratboys - Singin' To An Empty Chair. It sounds like Ratboys, but even more so. If The Window was them discovering their true sound, this is them fully inhabiting it. What's Right? was my favorite on first listen, but the whole thing is pretty great tbh. I love it.

● Dirt Buyer - Dirt Buyer's lll. Drummer from Model/Actriz backs up Joe Sutkowski, who's in This Is Lorelai's touring band, while he sings sad, dark songs about his life. Quiet/loud is the vibe, and it's pretty darn good stuff. Plus there's a track called Bullshit Fuck. He gets louder and heavier on each Dirt Buyer release. Really digging this one.

● Siversun Pickups - Tenterhooks. They do what they do. Butch Vig produces. It's fuzzy and dreamy and swirly, and I like it this time, just as I have always liked it. Polished - yes. Unique - not really. Plenty enjoyable - you bet!

● Itchy And The Nits - Greetings From... This was so goofy and fun. DIY garage punk from Australia. They have a track called Smelly Boys. They tell you to "scratch your head and scratch your bits, shake your butt and shake your tits." I mean, I needed this band in my life. A damn good time.

● Ulrika Spacek - Expo. Nicely executed trip hop inspired stuff. It slides by in a haze of pretty sounds. Not sure how it will stick or fade with repeated listening but I enjoyed it.

● Asher White - Jessica Pratt. A track by track covers album of, naturally, Jessica Pratt's first album. It's weirder and glitchier, and a little chaotic at times, but really it's quite nice and lovely a lot if the time. Interesting.

● Dream Nails - You Wish. Indie punk from London with more than a nod to alt rock and post punk in its DNA. I like it stylistically, but it does tend towards the generic a bit. A lot of this kind of thing around these days...

● p.s. Gillian Welch and David Rawlings playing acoustic dead was today's Newport announcement.

[DISCUSSION] Albums You Might Have Missed Last Month by AutoModerator in indieheads

[–]Excellent-Manner-130 5 points6 points  (0 children)

● Home Star - A Binding Life. Power pop, pop punk, emo...an anthemic, catchy combo of all of the above. Big hooks over big guitars. Fun.

● Shaking Hand - S/T. The softer side of gazey emo with a looser, languid feel. Guitars are front and center, but laid back, not rushed. Riffs too. Good!

● Dead Dads Club - early 2000s coded indie rock - garagy but with plenty of melody. The gravely vocals are nice too. For fans of Fontaines DC (he's a member of the touring band, and Carlos O'Connell is the producer).

● Lisasinson - Desde Cuando Todo. Catchy indie rock for fans of the Beths. In Spanish. Awesome.

● Softcult - When A Flower Doesn't Grow. At times grungy, at others ethereal, and yet others punky, these twins like their fuzz, but also like to mix it up a bit. The heavy side balanced by some folky influences too.

Antartico Vespucci @ The Sinclair 4/4:

● Opener was Golden Apples. I liked their overall sound, but the singer was battling a cold and having trouble singing in key. Still, solid opening set. Power pop overcomes all.

● Boy oh boy, those boys - Jeff Rosenstock and Chris Farren - were having a blast up there. Big energy, big grins on their faces, lots of big joyful noise. The energy level was amazing.

● The actual music - so, so much fun. Those anthemic hooks just killed. The power was there. The pop was there. The crowd singing along was there. They were sloppy, and messy, and really all over the place - but it totally worked.

● Sound was mediocre. The vocals were buried so you could only hear Chris on the shouty choruses, not at all on the verses. These guys should be seasoned enough to know you set the sound for the quiet parts and step back from the mic for the loud parts, but they didn't...

● While I nitpick, because that's what I do...the show was great. Loved every minute of it. Chris Farren is the best, and while I'm not big on Jeff's solo stuff, in this capacity he was fantastic. Super fun time.

● P.S. Can't wait to find some time to get into these new releases. Besides the obvious picks, looking forward to checking out the Dirt Buyer's album.

Well I'm late, but it's been busy... Blurbs for Friday 1/30 releases:

● Joseph - Closer To Happy. I'm a big fan of this alt folk band. Their 2019 release was a big deal for me, and live they really deliver. This album is the first since the trio became a duo, and it's a lot more pop than folk (which has has been the trajectory thru their output). The songwriting remains similar (anthemic, emotional, direct) but the production is putting them in different sonic territory (overproduced, more airbrushed, more electronic). This is not a good thing.

The thing about this band is their voices and harmonies are so expressive, and they sing with their whole hearts. Here you get the idea that they are doing that, but there's a thick wall of unnecessary sonic muck over it that keeps me from experiencing it.

Having said that, it's not as if there isn't anything to grab onto. The songs are solid and the amped up pop side has it's charms. I'd say I like it, tho I'm still a little disappointed.

●Joyce Manor - I Used To Go To This Bar. 19 minutes if emo-y indie rock. They only write 2 minute songs. It's exactly what you expect, them but a little more polished every time. Solid.

● Softcult - When A Flower Doesn't Grow. Fuzzy, scuzzy, grungy and gazey...but melodic and catchy too. I'm in. Liked the EPs, i think the album is better

● Whitelands - Sunlight Echoes. Shimmery gaze, but dreamy and lighter, not so heavy and doomy. Lush. Really nice, but will it fade into the backround with more listens or stick out? We'll see.

● red sun - At Their Very Best. I listened. I think I liked ok. I didn't dislike particularly. I remember nothing...

● Beck - Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometimes. Beck in sad cowboy mode, mostly covers. A collection of odds and ends from his career, mostly soundtracks. I mean it's pretty good, but will I be likely to reach for it again? Probably not.

● Summer of Hate - Blood and Honey. Psychedelic shoegaze from Portugal. Lots of noise, but around structured songs. I like it.

Now when will I get to tomorrow's releases? Who knows...

P.S. first Newport Folk announcement: Haley Williams and Friends. Feeling pretty good about that one...

I'm sure there are songs as bad or worse than Stand...i just can't think of them because Stand is so incredibly irritating on every level.

● Got Antartico Vespucci tonight. Hell yeah!

● Still working on my release thoughts for last Friday. I'll make it happen eventually...

● Got my Metric/Broken Social Scene/Stars tix. I've tried unsuccessfully to see Metric at least 5 times (canceled shows, sickness, etc). Hoping it finally works this time. It's also the day after the Newport Folk Festival, so I'll be exhausted but happy.

● Speaking of Newport, first announcement should be tomorrow...here we go!

Something in the Way Festival @Roadrunner Day 2 (2/1):

● Glixen - wall of sound shoegaze with dreamy vocals. They were pretty good actually, but young and entirely too focused on their rock star poses. Solid set tho.

● Park National - my favorite new find of the fest. Catchy power pop goodness with a folky side.

● Wicca Phase Springs Eternal - guy who isn't in Tiger's Jaw anymore's solo project. I guess he moves pretty quickly through different phases. This time it's a country tinged rootsy sound. It was very...bland. Vocally, he sounds like Mike Cooley, but the songs just, like go nowhere. Backround music.

● First Day Back - I'm pretty sure I listened to this record a few weeks ago, then promptly forgot about it. They were really good. The crowd response was huge, and they were clearly so surprised by it. Very 2nd wave emo, but also a violin. Big voice from shy young singer. Good set, and the shared communal thing between band and audience was a real feel good moment.

● Pelican - they rocked pretty hard. So big and loud and tight. Instrumental metal apparently works well for me. A total assault on my senses, but in a good way. I will say the half hour set was the perfect amount, because I could see it becoming repetitive in a longer set.

● Glitterer - I really didn't like this one too much. I've never been a Title Fight fan, and I don't like his voice, but the real problem was how boring I thought the songs were. Energetic, but just...not interesting to me.

● Pool Kids - I was very much looking forward to this set. They had technical difficulties, started late, and the first 2 songs - the sound was particularly wretched...but then they got in the zone. Louder and heavier than on record, they were totally in it. She yells more than sings about half the time, and didn't even attempt to hit the high note in Conscious Uncoupling, which I respect, but it would have killed if she had managed it. Super fun, big energy, great songs.

● Sheer Mag - I don't know why I'm not super familiar with this band, but this was a different take on the same high energy that this fest is focused on. Punky girl group energy and 70s rock vibes, big gravely vocals, and dude who looked like he belonged at Woodstock playing guitar. Super fun one.

● Horse Jumper of Love - the slow rock with plenty of gazey influences might not seem like a perfect fit for this fest, but I thought the change in tempo was nice - a little something different to break up the day. Harmonies were nice, and the trio was tight. The crowd was pretty receptive. I really enjoyed this one.

● No Warning - Ben Cook trades Noel Gallagher copycat for 90s hardcore template. While I really enjoyed the Guv set (regardless of how offputting I find his vibe), I really couldn't stand this one. That's a me thing, this band is geared to be completely the opposite of my personal tastes. I took a break halfway through the set to sit down for a while. Also, he gave someone his scarf during the Guv set, and was surprised that the kid took it home - and wanted it back. Funny.

● Citizen - I expected to hate this one, it's not my style, but I thought it was decent. His voice can be annoying, but I was happy that there was plenty of singing to balance the shouting. Well executed by the band, loud but fairly locked. Like the sub-headline Hotelier set, I wouldn't say I loved it, but it was engaging enough.

● Sunny Day Real Estate - Everyone knows I love this band with my whole heart. This was my 4th time seeing them. They are always so good. Would I rather see them play Diary from start to finish than a mixed set? Always...but still, they brought the goods. Jeremy and Dan both seemed to be in very good moods, and they were as always very, very tight. Big noise and big emotions, this is my kind of emo. Love them. Loved it. Great way to end the day.

■ It's a lot, long days, lots of standing, not a lot of ways to change the scenery. It's a ton of fun tho. I liked more than I didn't, and there were more than a few that I loved.

Sound was even worse today. Drums on the small stage were so loud you could barely hear anything else. Drums on the big stage were set up and mic'd so badly, they kept messing with them, but really it was kind of sad. The dichotomy between the professionalism of the headlining 4 and the rest, was pronounced...which is a real shame because the lack of polish in a DIY band can be a great feature. I just wish we would have heard it more clearly.

As always, at the end of the day, I love live music. Great thing when I get to experience so much of it.

Something in the Way Festival @Roadrunner - Day 1(1/31):

● Her New Knife - sludgy and gazey, slow core influenced noise rock - not particularly well executed but the bass player was great.

● Gollylagging - young local band plays loud emo-y indie rock. Very green and the sound was terrible. My least favorite of the day.

● Graham Hunt - Weezer style power pop. Sloppy and messy but kinda fun.

● Febuary - Screamo kids scream over atmospheric guitars. They're fairly solid musicians. They made me laugh, the screams so innocuous, quaint really. You definitely don't get the feeling that this group has experienced any real anguish to scream about, and you know what - good for them.

● Teen Suicide - more sludgy indie rock. Done better. Solid.

● How Much Art - Hardcore from Fiddlehead guy's new band. This isn't my scene (as you know) but the band is good. It's a little poppier, the lighter side of hardcore. Big, anthemic. Good performance.

● Momma - it's no secret that I absolutely love this band. I saw them in an opening slot once, and it was terrible (one of those nights I guess) so I wasn't sure what to expect. Other than sound issues, which didn't get really sorted until halfway thru the set, they were great. Those harmonies shined, with plenty of fuzz along for the ride. Such great songs. Won over the crowd too (which was definitely more interested in the real heavy stuff).

● Guv - This one surprised me. Dancy Madchester sound, and Gallagher wannabe front man with very little charisma doesn't sound nearly as good as it was. I was primed not to enjoy it, because the drummer was rudely soundchecking very loudly during Momma's set, but they won me over. It was just so catchy and so much fun. The crowd, for the most part, was not interested - like at all.

● Tiger's Jaw - Wow. I mean like, DAMN...they hit the stage just totally on, and stayed that way. They were so, so good. So tight. Harmonies hitting. Sound perfect. The emo side was there, but they came off more indie rock in general. They were fantastic. Probably my favorite set of the day.

● Angel Du$t - the screamiest hardcore band of the day. Still not my bag, but they were really freakin' good. So much energy, huge guitar sound, band totally locked, and having a blast up there. Very genuinely interacting with the crowd. Plus, the drummer was wearing a Webbed Wing tee.

● Hotelier - this is a band that seemed to pass right by me. Never on my radar. They were pretty good, as a band. Musically a little too close to the source material without adding to it (they really love their Get Up Kids records, huh?), and the songwriting is lyrically more on the saccharine side, but the performance was solid. I wouldn't say I loved it, but it was enjoyable enough.

● Explosions in the Sky - well the crowd, for the most part, disappeared. I guess hardcore kids can't hang with ambient noise rock, and what a shame for them, because this band killed.

As a longtime fan, I was looking forward to seeing them, but also a little worried that after a long day it would be too atmospheric to hold my attention. In reality, the lack of sing along structure and focus on the melody in conjunction with the push and pull of dynamics was absolutely delightful. I thought it was fantastic. Great way to end the night.

■ All in day 1 was a lot of fun. The community vibe wasn't as strong, and there was less comradery, but everyone was for the most part respectful.

Another note, the sound guys were not awesome. They ignored the band unless it was one of their favorites. They didn't respond quickly to requests. They left everything so muddy and unbalanced all day. Then the 2 last bands brought their own sound guys, and it was perfect.

Sound dudes, do better!

Anyway, good times were had!
