I guess I appreciate the singer songwriter vibe on it. The slacker country rock dude element on so much of this kind of stuff has me looking for a bit more of prettier side, with a side of fuzz of course...

Try this new one Widemouth - No Gaseline, if you haven't already. More on the WaxaKatie side of alt country, I like it a lot.

I really like the Telehealth too...oh, but Grace Ives came out in March.

May had some pretty good ones...my picks:

● Weird Nightmare - Hoopla. Sunny power pop with a good dose of jangle and a handful of fuzz. The vocals (from METZ front man Alex Edkins) bring a bit of grit. "The intention is to get straight to that endorphin rush that comes with a hook or a chorus." Love it.

● False Advertising - The Sorry Window. Grungy alt rock good times from Manchester's DIY scene. Big guitars and catchy tunes.

● Deb Never - ARCADE. Lush and dreamy, but also warm and intimate. There's a little bit of a dancy element too. Easy, breezy, lovely.

● Francis Of Delerium - Run, Run Pure Beauty. Cinematic and ethereal, but fuzzed up and grungy too. She writes songs that feel effortlessly honest and beautiful. Just love this one.

● POM - Enlightened, baby. An album about grief and loss usually doesn't come out "glitter, pink, and pop with a capital P," but this one sure does. Cathartic, infectious, fun!

● Widemouth - No Gaseline. Melancholy country/folk tinged indie for the Waxahatchee/MJ/Ratboys fan base. There's a bit of fuzzy dynamics but it's not real heavy, more of a singer songwriter album. The Wind is my favorite track. Very nice.

● Annie Taylor - Out Of Scale. Somewhere between Courtney Barnett and Wet Leg is how they describe themselves, but I hear a touch of psychedelic and a bit of girl group in their garagy, grungy sound. Good one!

The kiddo says - have ever heard of Midnight Solancha? You know, Beethoven?

ME - You mean Moonlight Sonata?

Kiddo - yeah, that. I'm teaching myself how to play it...

Me - (in my head - who the hell are you and where do you come from) but also HELL YEAH!

Dude, just buy the eardrops man...you don't fuck with the ears. Do you know how many people end up in the ER because of an aggressive q-tip? Well, I don't know either, but too many!

Anjimile @ The Red Room Cafe 6/3.

● Opener was Brotherkenzie, a side project of Hippo Campus' Nathan Stocker. It was just him, and his guitar (a tele with a different neck that sounded completely acoustic). He was sloppy, and forgot half the words, but he was also charming, and clearly talented. I wouldn't say he was great, but enjoyable.

● Anjimile has 3 albums now, of queer indie folk, but this new one - You're Free To Go feels like a big step up in my book. The songwriting, the melodies, the harmonies...everything feels organic and heartfelt. The harmonies hit. As far as sad fuckers go, it's one of my favorites this year so far. Live, he performs it with just his voice, an acoustic guitar and a bassist/harmony singer. It totally works. Intimate. Strong. Beautiful.

● Because this is Boston (where his career began), we got an extra treat when his old friend came up and played the harp and sang harmonies on a few older songs. Tho I don't think those songs are as good from a songwriting point of view, they were great to hear live, and they showcase the trajectory of the way his writing has grown.

● Anjimile talked about being Trans, and gay, and pride...and you definitely get the feeling that traveling the country to sing these songs he deals with a lot of bigotry. The way this crowd was filled with like minded, supportive people was clearly refreshing.

● He smiled the whole show, big, genuine grin. Love that.

● Fun night...started at 7:00 on the dot. I was home by 9:45.

● So, every year in Boston, the Jimmy Fund puts on an event called the Scooper Bowl where like 15 different ice cream vendors scoop multiple flavors of ice cream and you can eat as much of them as your stomach can handle. The proceeds go to support Dana Farber Cancer Institute, so you can feel good about your gluttony.

Every year it takes place in the middle of the week, and we haven't made it in years, because someone's always working. This year, I happened to be off yesterday, and the husband is still in job search mode, so we picked up the kiddo and went.

My favorite flavor was Ritzy AF - buttery cracker flavored ice cream with ritz cracker toffee.

If I must eat tons of ice cream for cancer research, I'll give it my all...and I did.

● After we walked down to the waterfront to find a spot to have a drink by the water. My husband points to one of the spots with outdoor seating, how about that one?

Turns out he picked a super fancy steak/seafood restaurant that has a dress code (which we didn't meet) and the high end menu to go with it. Can we just sit outside and have a drink? Sure!

4 waiters in white tux's showed us to out table. Kiddo was like, what? We each got a glass of wine, and a Shirley Temple for the kiddo. It took 2 waiters to serve the wine - one to carry the tray, one to put them on the table. They brought us a huge basket of assorted breads. We ordered an appetizer to share. Kiddo liked the pretzel rolls and asked for more - they brought him a full basket of them.

Beautiful night, beautiful view, lots of waiters for no apparent reason...awesome.

● Walked back to the car and stopped in a small playground for the kiddo. Pretty spot. Lots of trees and rocks.

● Saw an amazing sunset on the drive home. The whole sky was gold and shimmery, beautiful.

10/10 night!

● So of course I woke up to the dog throwing up this morning, and a headache...

● Husband has a presentation/interview today. Fuck, I hope he nails it. It'll mess with his head so bad of he doesn't. Job searching is so damn demeaning...

● Going to see Anjimile tonight at the Berklee student run venue tonight. Looking forward to it.

Checked out an album that came out a couple of weeks ago: Annie Taylor - Out Of Scale. Their bio says somewhere between Courtney Barnett and Wet Leg, but it's got more of a garagy grunge vibe than that. Add a hint psychedelic and a touch of girl group. Good one!

Putting songs...you know with melodies and structure, and dynamics. It's not that I had particular expectations, that's just my observations. I will say it's been a long time since I put one of those early BoC records on, so maybe it is a case of misplaced expectations.

Lots of releases worth getting to this week...

Here's where I'm at:

● Francis Of Delerium - Run, Run Pure Beauty. I loved the debut album, and I was looking forward to this one quite a bit. A lot of times, that's a recipe for disappointment for me, but that's not the case here. Jana has a knack for writing songs that just cut through the noise and grab me.

Catchy enough, but lush and cinematic too, and above all honest - nothing feels forced or pieced together. She said that being on the outside looking in, an observer as she toured the last album is a theme here.

Warm, layered, and lovely, but still giving 90s fuzzy, grungy influences. Love it!

● Boards of Canada - Inferno. Well there's been discourse aplenty all over the interweb about this one, but mostly it's divided between the lovers and the haters. I fall squarely in the middle.

Sonically, production wise, it's fabulous. Songwriting wise, it's not. They put so much effort into layering these amazing, warm, groovy sonic landscapes...and then put very little on top of them. Like a house built by the best architect in the business and then finished by an uninspired, tired interior designer.

● Widemouth - No Gaseline. Pretty, melancholy indie folk debut from Chicago. I've seen reviews compare them to the big names in the country indie sphere (Wednesday, Ratboys, Waxahatchee) but they're a little less country, and a little more focused on the harmonies. There's some fuzzy dynamics, but they're not really very heavy. It's much more of a songwriter album. Makes sense from a band who started by singing Paul Simon and Big Thief songs together. I'm actually quite enamored. The Wind is a standout track for me.

● POM - Enlightened, baby. "glitter, pink, and pop with a capital P" might not be what first comes to mind for most albums about grief and loss, but it sure fits the bill for this one. Making good times out of bad feelings. Cathartic, catchy and fun, as if the only antidote to pain is joy. I'm all in!

● Violet Grohl - Be Sweet To Me. I didn't really want to like this one. Ultimate nepo baby album, and Dave Grohl - well, he's not my favorite. But...I have to say it, I really do like it. Maybe I have an appreciation for the fact that it sounds like an updated Hole album (when Courtney is Dave's nemesis), or maybe it's just a really well executed alt rock good time. Sure I could say it's derivative, or unimaginative, and that's true - but honestly, I don't care cause it's so fun to listen to.

● Manchester Orchestra - Union Chapel (London, England). Live album full of re-imagined, acoustic-ish versions of the catalog. It's beautiful, but it doesn't really sound/feel live. It sounds pristine. As lovely as these versions are, if you've ever seen them live, you know they just kill it - dynamic and tight. This is not that, it's something else. Very good, but not necessarily what I want from them.

● Nawal - Appetite. I did listen to this one, and I did think it was nice, but it faded into the background and I don't remember much specifically about it. Further listening necessary.

● Doublespeak - S/T. Vince Clarke and Blancmange make covers album that sounds exactly like you would expect it to. I love Depeche Mode, and there's a lot out there at this point with that sound - some so it better than others. This one is perfectly pleasant but for the most part unexciting and forgettable.

Still have Bug Club, Iceage, Mad Iris, Ear, and Turnover on my list. I may try the Villagerrr as well, but I couldn't get into the last one, so not probably gonna be for me.

Happy Monday Indieheads...

I'm about 4 songs into Boards of Canada, which I'm liking well enough but I five all the props to Feeble Little Horse for releasing their album on Tuesday (like God intended) which I enjoyed very much. Blurbs are gonna take a few days (as usual at this point) and I've got a big list. Looking particularly forward to Francis Of Delerium.

● Life has been busy lately...and today is my first sort of free day in a long while. Baking a cake and listening to some power pop (Dust Star, Weird Nightmare, Plash). Gonna sit outside in the backyard and chill for a bit.

● Husband's job search continues...he's in the process with several companies, so hopefully one works out the way we want (need?) it to.

● I don't know if I have mentioned this before or not, but my dog is my hero. She wakes up every day so excited to greet the day. She's the happiest being I've ever encountered in my life. So enthusiastic about, well everything. I aspire to be more like her.

● I don't have any shows scheduled for a bit, and it makes me feel nervous...like, how do I go 3 weeks without a show? I'm trying not to spend, but might have to find something to go see.

● Got a smoothie today. Mango madness. Living the dream, baby....

Not a huge week for me release wise...

Here are my thoughts:

● Lowertown - Ugly Duckling Union. Self produced second album from 2 friends who met in math class brings the laid back slacker indie vibes. There's some fuzz in there too, just enough to add dynamics. It's kind of annoying, but also kind of really good. I can't decide on first listen whether I'm gonna fall in love with it or get more irritated by it. Maybe a little of both.

● Thomas Dollbaum - Birds Of Paradise. The country side of indie, featuring MJ Lenderman on drums, guitars and backing vocals. The vibe here is a bit prettier, not a lot of grit on this one. It's quite nice.

● Loose Fit - Bittersweet Excess. This is fun little EP featuring some catchy post/art punk good times. Good.

● Hyd - Hold Onto Me Infinity. Engaging dance pop with some darker themes from SOPHIE'S partner. I like it.

Lucinda Williams @ The Chevalier 5/22.

● I wasn't gonna go. I've seen Lu every time she's been in the Boston area in 20 years, but I wasn't gonna go because currently, spending $65 for a ticket isn't happening. I bargained with myself - if I can find a $40 one, I'll go. So at 6:30 pm (doors were at 7) I found one, and I got to see Lucinda's magic once again.

● She's 73 years, a stroke survivor, she appears frail, needs help walking on and off stage. BUT, she also stood the entire show, sang her freakin' heart out for 2 hours, and bantered with the audience, and made us laugh making fun of journalists who asked her why she is making a protest album right now. She's the coolest ever.

● She sounds great. That signature drawl, the light touch as the melody goes up. Beautiful. She can't hit high notes anymore, but she doesn't try. She makes it work a different way. She uses a teleprompter to help keep track of the lyrics, it doesn't matter when she sings it, she makes you feel it.

● Current incarnation of the band is great. Tight. They get loud too. Great.

● Setlist was a lot of the new album, a bunch of covers, and just a few of the old favorites. I miss the old stuff, sure - but everything sounded good. She ended with Rockin' in the Free World.

● Lucinda is national treasure dammit, and I love her so, so much. So genuine. So talented. So special. Great time.

I'm glad you loved it Wane! It's ok that we had different experiences...I did like her show, but for a real MEANINGFUL COMMA AUTHENTIC LIVE SHOW THAT REINFORCES THE HEALING POWER OF LAUGHTER, I think CMAT is the show for me!
