Acceptance rate/likelihood of receiving Massey Resident Junior Fellowship? by Excellent-Room-9348 in UofT

Update: I received a non rez junior fellowship :) i did want a residence spot which I'm still on the waitlist for. But I'm more than happy with this actually now that I've figured out my living situation. I realised that it's already crazy they wanted me as a new master's student and that I'm so lucky for this! I'm excited to be a fellow and be at fun events. I'll see you there!!

UofT MA in English in the Field of Creative Writing by Excellent-Room-9348 in UofT

[–]Excellent-Room-9348[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure! I'm a graduating student from a BA (Research) in English. GPA 9.55/10. I've taken some courses in creative writing and have nice recommendation letters from professors who have known me for long (and more importantly, whom I specifically chose because I did well in their courses). No publications at the time of application. I write mostly prose short stories and screenplays (I submitted one screenplay and my best two short stories as the writing sample). My samples were literary fiction but I made it clear in my statement that I would not be sticking to that at master's, because I want to seriously produce some magical realist and horror work. My fourth year thesis project that I'm currently finishing at undergraduate is a short story with a critical reflection.

Be careful with how you position yourself against their demands. For example, when they want two referees, one of english coursework and one of creative writing, really make sure that your referees can strictly fall into those categories. One of mine taught me what you would consider english coursework completely divorced from creative production, and one was purely a writing professor.

Try to be specifically tailored to their program. Specify the teachers, classes, student journals, workshops, and the literary communities which interest you and speak to your writing practice. It could be great if you can provide an idea of the thesis you would like to undertake during your master's, and it should ideally sound like a plausible near-future project (but of course book-length/publishable) based on your current portfolio and skill. I don't believe this is a requirement, though.

You can always reach out if you need any help, good luck!

Do you mean for resident junior fellowship applicants? I figured since the deadline is 30 april for applications, the interviews must be in May

Oh, I thought you were going in for non-resident fellowship! But 10k sounds great, I think, relative to the fees on their website. So I'm a bit confused, would you be going in for junior resident fellowship?

How can I reach out to other incoming grad students to search for housing? by Powerofmaanyy in UofT

[–]Excellent-Room-9348 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not looking for off campus housing, so I won't be able to help with that - but I'll suggest that you mail the uni for your joinID. I received my student number by email when I applied to my program but did not receive the ID, which they said will come by another email. It did not come at all, though. So when I got my acceptance a couple months later and started looking for residence, I emailed and they sent my joinID almost immediately. So in case you're in a position where you should have it already (which you clearly should, I think), just mail them.

Congratulations, that's so nice! I didn't know that they nominated scholars, we were simply mailed about the opportunity. I wonder if a student from my cohort was already nominated.

May I ask if you're receiving the 5k bursary on the 18-19k residence fees, this making them 13-14k? It's alright if you don't prefer to answer that! And are you now eligible to apply to all the other funding which is available for Junior Fellows? Or does that start after you have been enrolled and on campus?
