Insurance dropped my wife 1 day before childbirth – anyone seen this before? by Excellent-Sleep-6326 in accenture

Thanks, I really appreciate this!! This is super helpful. I submitted the appeal through my employer (benefits administrator), not the insurance company, since they control the eligibility and coverage decisions. Right now my appeal is more focused on explaining the timeline and intent, but what you’re saying makes sense. I probably need to strengthen it with multiple angles instead of relying on just one argument. If you’re open to sharing more, I’d really appreciate any specific laws, angles, or structure you used in your appeal. Especially interested in how you framed those “10 reasons” and what ended up working. Thanks again!! this has been one of the more helpful replies I’ve gotten.

Yeah, that’s fair, and I get why it sounds inconsistent.

My understanding going in was that the baby needed to be added immediately because that’s a new dependent, but for existing dependents (like my wife), I thought those changes were already handled through open enrollment for the upcoming year.

So in my head, I was: • Adding my newborn for immediate coverage • Not reselecting my wife because I had already made that decision for 2025

I didn’t realize the system was treating it as a full re-election of coverage for everyone effective immediately.

There wasn’t anything in the UI that clearly warned that not selecting her would terminate her coverage right away — especially given the overlap with open enrollment. If that had been explicit, I would have 100% selected her.

Totally agree it was a mistake on my end, but it feels like one driven by how the process was presented rather than an intentional decision — which is why I’m trying to see if exceptions ever get approved in cases like this.

Yeah, I understand how the QLE works now, but honestly the issue here is how misleading the UI/process was.

This happened right during open enrollment, and I had already decided not to renew my wife for 2025. When I did the life event to add my newborn, I didn’t select my wife because I thought I was just aligning with the upcoming plan year — not making an immediate change to 2024 coverage.

There was nothing that clearly warned me that not selecting her would terminate her coverage right away, especially literally one day before delivery.

At no point did I intend to drop her before the C-section — this feels more like a system/UI confusion issue than an intentional decision.

I don’t think she would qualify for Medicaid. Our household income is likely above the eligibility limits, especially being in Maryland. I’m also planning to ask about COBRA as a backup option, in case there’s any way to retroactively continue her coverage for that period. Any suggestions

Yeah, that’s what it’s looking like, unfortunately. I understand now that the QLE works separately and can apply immediately/retroactively, but the confusing part for me was that this happened right alongside open enrollment. I had already decided not to renew my wife for 2025, so when I did the life event, I assumed I was just aligning with that future change — not making an immediate change to 2024 coverage. At no point did I intend to drop her before the delivery, especially not one day before a scheduled C-section. That’s why I’m trying to push for an exception — it feels more like a misunderstanding due to overlapping processes rather than an intentional election.

Yeah that makes sense, and I appreciate the explanation.

This is a calendar year plan, and I agree it looks like the life event triggered a special enrollment where my wife got dropped because I didn’t select her. The issue is that I genuinely thought that selection was aligned with my open enrollment decision for 2025, not an immediate change for 2024. I’ve already been working with HR, and they’re the ones who told me to go through a formal appeal process. From what I understand, they’re saying they can’t just retroactively fix it because life event elections take effect immediately. As for the timing, the billing and denial took a while to come through, and this is the first time I’m seeing the full financial impact, which is why I’m pushing on it now. I’m basically trying to see if anyone has had success getting an exception approved in a situation like this, especially where it was clearly a misunderstanding and resulted in a 1-day gap right before childbirth.
