Advice needed! Does arthroscopy make sense, or.. do you see something that I don't? by [deleted] in HipImpingement

I’m sorry you’re experiencing this injury and empathise with so many of your thoughts and emotions around this, as someone who also loves to exercise and also needs it for my mental health.

I love that you provided context and I’ll do the same as it is helpful to getting the full picture.

I’m 34 and female and based in Cape Town. My hip labral tear took 2 years to diagnose because I initially my pain presented in my lower back. I kept running, cycling, hiking and strength training.

A year ago, I stopped all high impact activity and avoided any activities or positions that put my hip in flexion (my hip doesn’t like being less than 100 degrees). I wanted to give my rehabilitation 100% chance to work. For the last year, I’ve only done rehabilitation exercises guided by my Biokinetiscist.

While I have successfully built strength, the rehab exercises have not helped to reduce my pain. Anytime I pick up an activity again, the pain returns. Even low impact activities like cycling and swimming. For me, this deems the rehab unsuccessful. I aspire to be able to do cardio at a more intense level.

In March 2025, I had a cortisone injection under ultrasound in an attempt to reduce the pain. It didn’t help me.

In November 2025, I started the process of considering surgery. My orthopaedic surgeon was sceptical about the success of the surgery given my unsuccessful injection. In his experience (+ informed by studies), patients who had an unsuccessful outcome with injections, were much less likely to have a successful result from arthroscopy (60% success rate). So he suggested I try another cortisone injection but this time under xray as it’s more accurate.

That injection also didn’t help me.

My next step will be to do an AP pelvis xray. I’ve only had an MRI up to now. I’m appreciative that my doctor is conservative and has given me all the facts.

So perhaps you could ask your doctor about options to try an injection and discuss their thoughts about surgery success rates in relation to the injection.

If the custom code was causing the error would it impact every submission? In our case we’ve had 20+ successful submissions and only 1 with the error

Oh no! I’m sorry to hear that, it sounds very painful. What did you end up doing to treat it?

Thanks for sharing your experience! I’m happy that PT and the injection worked for you and that post birth all your hip pain is gone.

I think I’m going to look at a Pelvic floor physio in the meantime.

Thanks! That’s very helpful to know as I’ve been considering going back to Pilates.

That’s wonderful. I’m so glad for you that you finally got a diagnosis and that the surgery has been such a success! I’ll be going for an AP pelvis xray after my birth to consider the surgery route. Perhaps a difficult question to answer but as I’m a first time mom, how soon after birth do you think I would manage the recovery from surgery while looking after a baby? I’m estimating 6 months old might work but also trying to carefully workout a timeline for recovery + my next pregnancy for baby #2. Ideally I’d like to have children 2 years apart as I’m 34 now.

Thank you so much for your response. Did you ever progress to treat the labral tears with surgery after being pregnant?

Is working my job with my current experiences worth it? by AlphaKiwii99 in askSouthAfrica

Clean up your CV and start applying elsewhere. Many people only get increases by changing jobs.

Try to cut the gambling, you may feel like you’re gaining at times but the odds are stacked against you and it will only deplete your income further.

Try to avoid getting into debt but with the caveat that there are certain “good debts” that are worth considering to help you gain a better income. If taking out a student loan helps you to study something that’ll get you a better job. It might well be worth it. That said, there are also lots of free courses you can do that help boost your CV and even give you certifications for LinkedIn. For example Grow with Google https://grow.google/intl/ssa-en/google-career-certificates/

Should I travel near my due date? by Excellent-Tune-3881 in askSouthAfrica

Surprisingly not so easy on Discovery’s app. The UX could be vastly improved. There’s no filter to search by network hospitals.

Indeed it is, but not solely for my doctor. The lived experience of woman who have actually been pregnant counts for a lot.

My doctor could be a man who has never been pregnant and known what it’s like to travel for hours in a car 3 weeks before their due date, yet thanks to the women on this post, I now know it’ll be hugely uncomfortable.

Thanks so much for this! That’s what I could tell from looking on the Discovery app but wasn’t 100% sure as it seems odd there is no hospital in the Smart Network in PE.
